Homemade Hair Reconstructor

Homemade Hair Reconstructor

I have seen a lot of ideas for homemade hair reconstructors and conditioners, but other than using Coconut Oil as my favorite hair moisturizer, I have never used home products to make homemade hair reconstructor…until now!

Thanks again to Pinterest, I couldn’t pass up the idea of making my own hair reconstructor.

Hair Reconstructor Before and After

The treatment made my natural curls more bouncy & took away frizz

Hair Reconstructor Vs. Hair Moisturizer

A hair reconstructor is different than a hair moisturizer.  A moisturizer adds moisture back into the hair.  It is great for dry hair.  A reconstructor is like a strengthener.  It helps heal damaged, weak hair.

There are several things that make hair need moisturizing treatments and reconstructing treatments.  Some hair is just naturally dry and weak, but most of the damage is from:

  • highlighting and coloring hair
  • not getting regular trims
  • outside elements like wind and sun
  • heat damage from hair dryers and curling/flattening irons
  • certain medications

My hair had damage from all of the above!

12 Must- See Homemade Remedies To Save Your Health And Your Budget

So its been all over the news that they are finding parabens in the breast cancer survivors breast tissue.  My ears perked up with this because I have been in the beauty business for years as a cosmetologist, and parabans seem to be in EVERY beauty product.  I have also met way too many young hairstylists that also battled breast cancer, and it has made us all say “hmm.”

Parabens are a group of compounds widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, including underarm deodorants. Parabens are absorbed through intact skin and from the gastrointestinal tract and blood.
Measurable concentrations of six different parabens have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors (Darbre, 2004). The particular parabens were found in relative concentrations that closely parallel their use in the synthesis of cosmetic products (Rastogi, 1995). Parabens have also been found in almost all urine samples examined from a demographically diverse sample of U.S. adults (Ye, 2006a).
Parabens are estrogen mimickers, with the potency of the agonistic response being related to the chemical structure (Darbre, 2008). They can bind to the cellular estrogen receptor (Routledge, 1998). They also increase the expression of many genes that are usually regulated by estradiol and cause human breast tumor cells (MCF-7 cells) to grow and proliferate in vitro (Byford, 2002; Pugazhendhi, 2007). Nevertheless, parabens as a class do not fully mimic estradiol in the changes in cellular gene expression nor are the effects of all parabens identical (Sadler, 2009).
Parabens are estrogen mimickers.”  This really made me pause, as my cancer and the majority of breast cancers are fed by hormones.  I had symptoms of estrogen dominance for years and I often wonder if this contributed to my diagnosis.
As I have been trying to avoid parabens, I have been on a kick of making my own beauty products, and in my quest to avoid chemicals, I have also been back on track of making some of my own cleaners. There are some wonderful healthy products out there, but they usually end up costing an arm and a leg, so have been quite motivated to make my own.
My inspiration comes hugely from my Pinterest Boards.
Here are a few that have caught my eye on

    6 DIY Homemade product ideas

    1. Anti-Eczema Lotion Bars.
My youngest deals with a few patches of eczema every once in awhile.  I like to have something on hand, and I usually buy it from our local health food store.  I compared the ingredients in these bars to the product we use and love and they are super similar.  Makes me happy as the one we buy is not cheap!

    2.  Peppermint Oil Insect Repellent
It is natural, smells good, and is green, too!
    3. Coconut Scalp Treatment Oil
This post is by Destri at The Mother Huddle, whom I love.  She, too, is a licensed cosmetologist and knows what she is talking about when it comes to the scalp and hair.
    4. Instant Olive Oil Sugar Hand Scrub
This one is also from The Mother Huddle.  Love that I can grab 2 ingredients in my kitchen and have soft hands within minutes.
    5.  Natural Wood Polish
Equal parts olive oil and vinegar!  So easy.  So cheap!
    6.  Homemade Air Freshener–those store bought sprays are full of chemicals and can trigger allergies, not to mention the propellent in aerosol sprays!

6-12 homemade cleaning products, cough syrup, gunk remover
    7.  DIY Super 40 Load Dryer Softener Sheet
Take your favorite liquid fabric softener and soak an old hand towel or flour cloth completely with it. Wring it out and let it dry completely, then throw it in with your next load. This mega-fabric softener sheet should be good for at least 40 loads of laundry WHAT A GREAT IDEA!! (If you want to be super green, I have heard that vinegar in the rinse cycle is great for making clothes soft.)

    8.  DIY Organic Dry Shampoo
This intrigues me.  The link has great directions on how to make it, just not how to use it.  If I make it, I will let you know what I figure out.

19 Favorite Food Rules For Healthy Eating

Cover for Michael Pollan's book: "Food Rules"

    by Micheal Pollan

I am a fan of Micheal Pollan.

He was the first one that I have read who was able to take the incredibly complicated question of

     “What Should I Eat?”

     and answer:

“Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

“Eat food and avoid edible food like substances.”

I read his first book, In Defense Of Food, a year ago and just really jived with it.   I was so happy to see that he came out with a short, easy to read, manual that expands on the answer.

Each page gives a simple tip on what to eat.  I read the book in 30 minutes and loved it.

New Nostalgia yellow logo "Rules for Healthy Eating"

Here are some of my most favorite rules from the book:

#2 Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.

(for example–neon colored tubes of flavored gel called Go-GURT!)

#3 Avoid food products containing ingredients that no ordinary human would keep in the pantry

    (ethoxylated diglycerides??)

#4 Avoid food products that contain high-fructose corn syrup

(it is a reliable marker for a food product that has been highly processed)

#5 Avoid foods that have some form of sugar (or sweetener) listed among the top three ingredients.

(exception to this rule, are “special occasion” foods–see Rule 60)

#6 Avoid food products that contain more than five ingredients.

(another sign that it is a highly processed food)

#7 Avoid food products with the word “lite” or the terms “low-fat” or “non-fat” in their names.

( Refined carbs can make you fat.  Sugar makes you fat.  Many low-fat or no-fat products boost the sugar and salt to make up for the flavor lost when removing fat)

#10 Avoid foods that are pretending to be something they are not.

(imitation butter-aka-margarine-is the classic example.  Artificial sweeteners..)

#11 Eat only foods that will eventually rot.

(real food is alive food…therefore it should eventually die)

#12 Eat foods made from ingredients that you can picture in their raw state or growing in nature.

(read ingredients on a package of Twinkies or Pringles and imagine what those look like raw or where they grow…ya can’t!)

#19 If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.

#22 Eat mostly plants, especially leaves

(antioxidants, fiber, omega- 3 fatty acids, energy dense!)

#23 Treat meat as flavoring or special occasion food.

(become a “flexitarian”–someone who eats meat only a couple times a week)

    #25 Eat your colors!

(colors from nature are full of polyphenols, flavonioids, carotenoid, which all fight disease!)

#34 Sweeten and salt your food yourself.

(you will find you are consuming a fraction as much sugar and salt as you otherwise would–example oatmeal–buy plain not flavored, sweetened or colored!)

#36 Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk.

(ha..like that one.  It’s kind of a “duh”)

#37 “The whiter the bread, the sooner you will be dead”

    (I expand on that here)

#39 Eat all the junk food you want, as long as you cook it yourself.

(if you made all the french fries you ate, you would eat them much less often!  Too much work!)

#57 Don’t get your fuel from the same place your car does

(Gas stations have become processed corn station.  Ethanol outside and high-fructose corn syrup inside!)

    #60 Treat treats as treats.

(special occasion food is great as long as every day is not a special occasion.  Save them for weekends or for true special occasions!)

    Super Abundantly Loved

Turquoise quote from Song of Songs 8:7

He tells me to simply love.
    Love, pure with out self-interest.

    Without seeking return.
Without being disappointed when it is not returned

For you see, I am so deeply loved–that is why I can love.
I can say “yes” to this call of love

    Love poured out.
    Love poured over.

    Grace has overflowed onto me.
I am abundantly surrounded,  love swirling,
caught up and enraptured by love.

Love as fierce as a hurricane
and I bend beneath the weight of this God love.

Its bigness cradles, a hammock for my heart.
    He rocks me gentle.

    Movement– love moves.
It flows, it pours, it comes toward.

    I am called to love.
I am called to move toward.
    I can, I am God-breathed empowered
    I am loved.

    //

    Inspired by my reading in

    I Timothy 1:14
“And the grace (unmerited favor and blessing) of our Lord flowed out super abundantly and beyond measure for me, accompanied by faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.”

     I John 4:19
“We love because He first loved us.”

    //

Maybe you need this reminder today?  I sure did. I had a rough Monday morning as a Mom & tears flowed. I know I am called to love.  To come toward.  Sometimes this calling can feel next to impossible because my own emotions and hurt feelings get in the way.  The type of love God calls us to is only possible when we recognize how very completely & perfectly we are loved by our Creator.  His love, grace and blessing flows SUPER ABUNDANTLY & BEYOND MEASURE.  Did you get that?  Think about it for a minute.  A perfect God loves super abundantly & beyond measure, right here, right now, no matter what–more than we can even imagine. We cannot even grasp this, yet I find myself asking God to help me KNOW this, for I know that it is only through His love that I myself can put aside my pride & hurt feelings, move toward, & simply love.

Organizing My Pantry & Some Tips For a Efficient & Simple Kitchen

    New Nostalgia's organized pantry

Now that the kids are back in school, I am eager to continue on in my series of Minimalizing Our Home.  I can’t tell you what a difference it has made in the areas I have already organized/minimalized. It has been so very easy to keep those areas clean and tidy.  It motivates me to get busy and continue on in my mission of embracing the slow life.  Part of living life to the fullest is eliminating that which takes up precious time, and for our family, that means anything excess that I would have to deal with.
Everything we bring into our home will need attention, whether it needs to be put away continuously, dusted or cleaned, or simply sitting there taking precious space in our home.  Because of this, I have become very thoughtful about what is worthy of my time and attention, and have enjoyed getting rid of anything that does not fit in that category…hence my minimalizing series!
Before and After organizing a large pantry
Back to the pantry, it is a space that really is important to keep tidy.  In my pursuit of health, I need to know what I have available to feed my family, and make sure it is accessible so we will actually eat it or I will actually bake with it.
I love mason jars for this very reason.  With a glance I can see what we have and how much of it we have.  My kitchen is plastic free for the most part.  I don’t trust what is in plastics, and mason jars are just so cute and easy for me to store and use.  I keep all the lids in one big bowl, and the empty jars on one shelf.  The small jars can stack which really helps with storage.  I love not having nasty, stained plastic containers and lids of every color and size.  I love the simplicity of mason jar lids.  One bowl, very accessible.
    Basket and spices

As you can see, I use mason jars to store my dried goods.  They are great for rice, nuts, seeds, coconut, & nutritional yeast.  I also love using a lazy susan in my pantry for the few things that come in their own resealable bag.  I also keep my peanut butter there, which I use every day so it needs to be in an easy- to- grab place.

The basket holds all my tea.  I like that I can quickly grab it and have everything I need for tea.

Under my tea basket are my place mats.  Again, easy to see and grab when needed.

Shelf for foil and wax paper
This little shelf works great for storing my foil & wax paper, etc.  I keep my extra boxes of tea underneath.

    Using containers for certain foods

I like using containers to corral certain foods.  I have 2 white tubs on this shelf.  One is for pasta, the other is our snack bucket.  I keep bagels and bread in between the white tubs and the brown wooden tub holds all our nuts.  See the wooden clothes pin sticking out of that wooden box?  This is another way I simplify my kitchen.  I keep a large mason jar full of wooden clips and use them as chip clips.  I like that they are all the same neutral color, and it gets rid of bright colored- plastic chip clips that are all sizes and hard to store.

    Salad spinner and rice cooker

This shelf holds some of my larger items.  My salad spinner, rice cooker and large salad bowl.   I keep clipped bags of chips in that large wooden bowl.  I also keep our cereal and oatmeal on this shelf.

The very top shelf holds any paper products we have, and I have put hooks up to hang our mop, broom, dust pan, mop bucket (in corner, not seen) and a plastic bag dispenser.  The wire basket holds my hand blender and potatoes when I buy them.  I have a large lazy susan for small appliances up top.

Organized pantry with trash can and mops
We recently invested in a larger trash bin with a swivel lid.  It works SO much better than this one in the picture.
Door to kitchen containing a hanging shelf
This door is in our kitchen right next to our pantry.  It leads to the garage and to our downstairs.  Our kitchen does not have much storage space, and our pantry is small, so I bought this over-the-door organizer about a year ago.  I keep hand towels & dish clothes in the bottom rack, as we only have 2 drawers in our kitchen…yep…I said 2!  I will share with you in an upcoming kitchen post how I deal with that!  Kids straws (Momma uses glass!) and our daily vitamins in the rack above that. Coffee & coffee filters on the next shelf. Above that are ingredients that I use often in my baking…baking powder, baking soda, salt & cocoa powder.  I usually keep vanilla there, too.  And again, extra tea boxes!  I love tea!
    White organized kitchen and sink
While we are on the subject of baking, it is really helpful to be super purposeful about where to keep  ingredients if you want baking to be a “piece of cake” so to speak. I keep my flours and sugars out on the counter, then just need to turn around and grab the rest of my dry ingredients from the door organizer in the pic above.  My measuring cups and spoons are all right there.  Having everything so accessible has made a BIG difference in my motivation to be more purposeful in whipping up healthy foods for my family.  It makes me WANT to bake.
    Recap of tips:
~Use mason jars–they are good for environment, they replace stained plastic, are see-through, and use the same lids which can be stored in one area and simplifies the kitchen.
~Use wooden clothesline clips as chip clips.  They are cute, small, and can fit in a mason jar for storage. Get rid of those big, multi-colored plastic chip clips!
~Use hooks to get your mop, broom and feather duster off the floor.  I have added more hooks against the pantry wall that is hidden for my girls lunch boxes.  Hooks are great for using vertical space.
~Use a holder to corral plastic bags.  This frees up a drawer or shelf/cupboard.
~Keep things that you use often front and center.  Be thoughtful and purposeful about where you place each thing.  This keeps your kitchen running efficiently and simplifies the baking/cooking process.
~Keep like with like.  Pasta together, nuts together, cereal together, vitamins together, snacks together, small appliances together….I really should put all my boxes of tea together…seeing them separate in the pics above is now driving me crazy!
~If you are low in drawer space, get creative with storage.  Use racks for foil, etc.  Use baskets for dish towels/dish cloths.

    DIY Art Bags

    Back to school supplies

Creating is something I have always encouraged in our home, even when my girls were little wee ones. We have always made sure paper and colors are available for them to use whenever they want. As they have gotten older, I have worked hard to make sure they have access to age-appropriate supplies, so that they can create whatever their art brains desire.

We have rolling carts with labeled drawers upstairs where we keep all their craft supplies, and use them a lot, but I also wanted to have basic supplies handy on our main floor that they could just grab and start creating with!
    IMG_6293
My solution was to make them each their own little school supply art bag. I shopped for these at the beginning of the school year when all the supplies were super cheap. I found the bag at Wal-mart in the craft supply section. All of the bags are black, but I made them distinct with certain supplies that were all the same color (my youngest daughter likes blue so her scissors, pencil sharpener and pencil erasers are all blue.) This is how they tell which bag is theirs.
    IMG_6294
I keep the bags in a very central location (our dining room) right by the table, not only because they are in view and the girls will use them more if they see them, but also so I can make sure they take good care of their bags and put them away properly.  Our table is also where they do their homework so the bags are very handy for that!  I am pretty strict about keeping them in the dining room to use at the table.  I only allow them in the car for  trips that are longer than an hour.
Before, we had supplies on all 3 levels of our home and showing up in places where they didn’t belong! I grew weary of questions like “Mom, where’s my little scissors?” and “Mom, where’s the tape?” Now that they are in one area it has worked so well.  They know right where they are, and find them daily, sitting on a shelf waiting for little creative hands to grab and use them!
    Update:
I originally wrote this post when my girls were 6, 9 & 10.  They are now 10, 12 & 14.  Now that they are older, we are down to one bag.  I’m all about simplifying, and it was overkill to have 3 bags now that they are older because they are rarely doing art at the same time.  If they do, they are old enough to share, and in the car we have ipods that keep them busy so the art bag is easily shared there, too.

    Jelly Bean Shoes Have Returned!

*This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #JellysAreBack http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO

They’re back! The have returned and I love ’em! Putting these on my feet took me back to when I was about 13 years old and got my very first pair of Jelly Shoes. Back then my shoes were clear with bits of glitter in them, with a scalloped edge. I now own a pair of much more sophisticated Jelly Bean Sandals. I chose black now that I am a bit more mature, but after feeling how comfortable they are, I may just have a little fun with them and get a few more colors.
Jelly bean shoes with different outfits
I love how versatile these shoes are.  They are the must-have shoe for the summer!  They are breathable and very cool.  I plan on wearing them well into fall, they provide enough coverage on the feet that you could take them into fall by putting them with a pair of jeans.  I have worn them with skirts, jeans, Capri’s, a dress and my swim suit!  It is the only shoe in my closet that can go with all of these types of outfits.  I have also worn them in the garden.  They are so easy to just hose off if I get them dirty.
    Jelly bean shoes worn outside
They are great for all ages.  My 3 girls, 14, 12 & 10 have been eyeing mine and asking what colors they come in.  Not only do they make a great summer shoe, but I plan on making it a great back-to-school shoe for my girls. I’m eager to watch the trend spread at their school, just like they did when I was a kid. Jelly Bean shoes are too much fun!
