A 4th of July Greeting + 4th of July Treat Holders Written by AveryBowman, Age 9

I hope you are all having a wonderful 4th of July day.  Our day has consisted of lots of swimming, great food and wonderful family time.  I feel full in every way, and incredibly thankful for my freedom and health!  Happy 4th of July!

firecracker crafts made out of toilet paper rolls

***photos by Avery Bowman (my 9-year-old)

My Avery girl is always up to something crafty.  She loves searching my Pinterest boards for crafty ideas and then making her own versions of what inspires her.

I woke up this morning and she was in her room at her desk, putting the finishing touches on these cute little 4th of July treat holders.  Her desk looked like a firework full of glitter and paint exploded on it, and the creative mess made me smile, especially when I saw the July calendar she made. I love that she marked church on Sundays and family nights on Fridays. So sweet.

I handed her my phone and asked if she would take some photos of her work.  She did such a good job.  I think it is only appropriate that SHE is the one who tells who how she made these cute little Fourth Of July Treat Holders.

Hi Everyone!

It is Avery here.

Thanks for reading my post. I hope you enjoy it.

Here is what you need to make Fourth Of July TP Treat Holders.

*Toilet paper roll

*Red, white, and blue paint

*Glitter (optional)

*Paintbrush

*Scissors

*Tape

*Plastic bag, tissue paper or wax paper

*String

*Last but not least, Candy!!!

First, what you do is take the toilet paper roll and paint it however you want.

After that sprinkle, a little glitter over it before the paint tries so it sticks.

Then cut the plastic bag or tissue paper into a rectangle

Add tape to the bottom of the paper.

Tape the paper to the end of the roll, then twist and tie with string.

Fill with any type of treat or candy.  Could also fill with confetti.

Tape the bottom of the TP roll closed.

I used Starburst candy and the cool thing about it is that if you think of the word, it has the word “star” in it, which is good for the 4th of July!

I can’t wait to see the look on my family’s faces when they see what I made for them.  Hopefully my sisters won’t see this post before I give it to them!

Happy 4th of July Everyone!

Easy Messy Updo

Easy messy updo

As you can tell by the color of my hair, I did this Easy Messy Updo a few months ago before I was a redhead!  It was date night and my natural curl was a bit nuts that day, so I needed something to tame it and make messy look good!
I have been a big fan of Kate from It’s The Small Things blog, and had pinned one of her how-to hair videos on my How- To Hairstyles Pinterest board.  I think her hair tutorial videos are the best on the web.  She is a professional hairstylist with a great sense of style.  Made sure you check out this page for an amazing assortment of hair style tutorials. She gave me the inspiration I needed to turn my mess into date- night- worthy hair.

My natural curl made this Messy Updo a breeze for me to do, and believe me, I embraced the MESSY and just let my natural texture have its way. If you do not have natural curl, do not worry.  Click through and Kate will show and tell you exactly what to do!  Enjoy and tell her Amy from New Nostalgia sent you over.

Learning The Love Languages Of Children & Teens

Todd Bowman with New Nostalgia.

These posts written by Todd (Amy’s husband) are designed to model a system of purposeful living.  At least once a month, he spends time setting meaningful goals around one of seventeen core priorities.

If you missed it, consider reading the foundation post – Purposeful Living #1.

Correct Priority #5 – Children (Emotional Health)
Goal – June 2013
Formally identify the primary Love Language for each of my three girls.

Thoughts
I have assumed for a long time that I know the primary love language for each of my three girls, but realized recently that I am not certain about any of them.
Whether through a simple test or through conversation (or some other method), I am going to take time to more formally assess and identify the love languages of my girls.
Knowing the primary way my daughters feel loved is super important to me as I set goals every month to try to speak that language for them on a consistent basis.  If I am making mistakes or missing the boat in this area with any of them, I want to figure this out.
Seeing as this is such a priority to me, I am thinking it makes sense to purchase and read the following two books which can best provide an overview of this topic.  I don’t want to assume just because I have read the adult book that I fully understand how the Love Languages apply to children and teens.

The five love languages of children book

The five love languages of teenagers book

If you can’t tell, I am a huge fan of the book The Five Love Language: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman.  There are a million marriage books out there, but this one may be my favorite.

DIY Patterned Flats

DIY Patterned flats

I love the look of striped and patterned flats for spring! But I did NOT want to pay $50-100 for a pair of shoes from Madewell or Toms. So when I saw some white flats at Walmart for $5, I decided to create my own! Here’s how I did it:

How to make patterned flats

1// Using masking tape, create a striped pattern on your shoes. I used ½ inch artists tape because it peels off so easily but you can use whatever you have on hand.

2// Grab a black Sharpie marker. I used Stained by Sharpie fabric markers but again you can use whatever permanent markers you have.

3// Start creating a triangle pattern. They definitely do not have to be perfectly equal or even triangles but it helps to draw down to use your tape to keep them in a straight line.

4// As you work your way down the front of the shoe, you can move the tape with you so that all of the triangles are straight and at least the same length.

5// Once the pattern is finished, color the trim of the shoe black to help give it a finished look.

6// Repeat for the second shoe. If you’re watching something to help pass the time, be careful not to mess up your pattern. As you can see, I got a little distracted. Whoopsies!

Blue and white striped flats
An easier and much less time consuming pattern is a simple doodled stripe.

Making your own patterned flats

1// Just like the last pattern, you’ll tape an evenly spaced striped pattern on your shoes.

2// This time I also continued the stripe around the sides and back of my flats.

3// With a colored or black Sharpie, practice doodling on a sheet of paper to decided how solid and dark you want your stripe to be.  Since my shoes were worn, I wanted the stripe to be a little more casual and left my lines pretty light and open-spaced.

4// Begin doodling in between the tape spaces. I would start light – you can always go back and darken the pattern.

5// When you’re done, peel off the masking tape to reveal your striped design.

6// I left the trim of my flats white, but you could also color them in to give it a more finished look.

Finished!

This was so easy that I’d love to create a few more pairs.

DIY Photo-Holder Magnets

It can be so fun to decorate the refrigerator with cute family photos! But something that drives me crazy is mismatched random magnets that distract from the photos and make everything look cluttered. I have a little stash of cute Washi tape so I decided to get creative and fix this problem by making some of my own refrigerator magnets. This project was so quick and easy!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Craft accessories

Here’s how I did it:

Washi tape on clothespin
1// Carefully line up the washi tape with an end of a clothespin. (I get my tape here – link towww.etsy.com/shop/prettytape)

2// Snip away excess tape.

3// Remove adhesive cover from magnet and stick it to the back of the clothespin.

4// These come in strips too if you don’t want your magnet to show – I happened to have round magnets on hand so I used those.

Photo holder magnets
5//Add adorable family photos! These are my siblings-in-law and their sweet girls. Have you ever seen a cuter family?

Finished!
