Embracing A Small Yard & Making It Cozy

Outdoor-Slow-livingOur spring here in the midwest seemed to take forever to behave and warm up.  The last couple weeks are finally warming up and I’m loving every second of it.

Our yard is quite small which honestly I have grown to love and appreciate.  Keeping the yard looking nice is quite a chore, so I could not imagine having a big yard!  My mother-in-law loves the outdoors and has a huge serving heart, so she has been over many days the last few weeks getting weeds out of the rock area of our play set and in all our planting beds around the house.  She is amazing! Thanks to her work I have been super inspired to get out there and add my own touches to making the yard great.

I have embraced the tiny yard size and have been taking steps over the last few years, to making it a great family space, one with lots of atmosphere and coziness.  It is working, as our family is finding ourselves out their together more evenings than not lately.  This is such a great reward for me personally, as it is what I have dreamed of as I have slowly added elements to draw my sweet family outside to enjoy!

Here are a few things I have done over the last few years to make it cozy:

Water Feature– we had a bit of landscaping done when we moved in over 5 years ago.  I knew I wanted a small sitting area and I have always loved the sound of water.  I asked our landscape guys if there was a simple, inexpensive way to add a water element to our small backyard.  They knew just the thing and made it happen within hours.  Basically, they dug a 2×2 ft hole that was about 18-24 inches deep.  They lined it with thick black rubber lining & added a water pump in it.  They put a metal rack over the hole, so the pump stuck out of the top just a bit.  They covered it with 3 large stones and then scattered slate-colored river rock around those large rocks.  We had our electrician put an electrical outlet close to the fountain, and now all we have to do is plug it in.  I add one anti-algae tablet to the water each spring when we first start it, and that is it.  It is the most loved feature in our yard and makes the sound of a running brook.  I love the natural look of it, & I love how low maintenance it is. You can see it if you  scroll down to the image of stringed lights, it is in the left bottom corner.

{my 2 youngest  back in 2009 dancing and singing in the rain.  This video shows the chairs I talk about below. I talk about the pots and my love for funky plants here.}

Lots of Chairs–we bought a bunch of chairs at Target during one of their end of season sales.  They are a neutral color which I love because I can add any color pillow to them for color.  I bring color to my yard with pillows and flower pots.  We bought about 10 of them, knowing there would be times we would want seating for friends.  I made sure they stacked nicely before purchasing because our storage is limited and our garage is just a single car size.

Fire Pit–I’ve pinned a bunch of fun fire pit ideas on Pinterest, but have never gotten around to any DIY fire pit projects.  A year ago my daughter and I took part in Black Friday shopping at Target, and they had a crazy deal on fire pits that I could not resist.  I’m so glad I didn’t.  We have had many fun family nights sitting around that pit, roasting marshmallows for apple s’mores or just using it to warm us up on chilly spring or fall evening.

A Place to Set Our Drinks–I’ve dreamed of a table and chairs for us to eat outside as a family on, but that is just not in the budget or practical in such a small space.  We do have a single driveway connected to our backyard, but now it is used as a basketball court and a table and chairs would just get in the way.  I have let go of my dream for now, although I do have my eye out for a foldable table to set out on the driveway with an umbrella and foldable chairs.  Something we could store away easily and only bring out when we want to eat as a family outside.  For now, I make do with a small table used to set beverages on.  We often eat outside, just with our plates on our lap or on a spread blanket picnic style.

TikiCollage3

Hanging Lights--these are another fav touch of mine.  There is something so whimsical about a string of lights and the glow they bring.  It adds an instant atmosphere!  I just bought one set, but would love to add more!

Tiki-Torch-Flame

Torches–We have one table top torch that found at a garage sale, and my favorite torch sculpture that I wrote about here.  I love them both.  I keep oil on hand, but they really only need filled once a year.  We light them any evening we are out there.  Tiki makes a citronella oil that works really well to keep the mosquitos away, and the element of fire always bring coziness.  I love that I don’t have to make a pit fire every night to have the element of fire.  I have had to replace the wicks about once a year, but they are so inexpensive (less than $2!) and can be found at any hardware store or garden center.  I stocked up and always have them on hand.

Cozy Blankets— I have 2 blankets used only for outdoors.  One is a white, thick comforter that I use to lay on the grass.  It never fails, if I lay it out, within minutes there is someone with a book laying on it.  It is also great for when my niece and nephew come over to play.  We just lay there and look up at the leaves in the trees or gaze at the clouds.  I have another lightweight blanket for those nights that are chilly and the fire is not lit. I’ve been eyeing this great picnic blanket made for the outdoors with a waterproof bottom to keep you dry.  I love the colors in it.

Funky-Plant-3

Potted Plants &  Flowers–I keep this simple and minimal. Years ago I spray painted some cheap plastic pots with Hammered Black Spray Paint by Krylon-made for plastic. They are lightweight and look great. Right now I fill my pots with annuals every year, but I am wanting to take a couple and put some perennials in them.  I don’t like spending cash on flowers that are going to die every season, and if the majority of my pot is made of a perennial, then I can add a touch of color with some annuals which will really cut down on the cost each year.

Playset{the only photo I could find of our swing set, from last year}

Swingset--we have kept our swing set even though it takes up the majority of our yard.  My 11 year old still plays on it.  Just a couple weeks ago she and 4 friends had a fun picnic up in the tower of it.  I also have a 1 1/2 year old niece and a 4 year old nephew who adore it , and even the sand box gets used when they come over.   I even find my big girls sitting on a swing while on instagram or reading their kindle, so it is worth it.  We paid a pretty penny for it over 12 years ago when Teagan was a young.  It has held up beautifully over the years and I am glad we invested in a quality set. (Childlife Playsets)

Basketball Hoop–I know, I know, the sound of balls bouncing isn’t quite cozy, but this hoop definitely has added to the coziness we feel as a family in our back yard.  Maybe coziness is not the best word.  Maybe togetherness is better.  Regardless, even though we didn’t have a huge driveway and a bigger space would be ideal for basketball, we make do with the single car driveway and it has worked out just fine.  I have you all to thank for our hoop as it was purchased with money I made last year from sponsored posts.  If you all didn’t support this blog by reading it, we would not have a hoop!  Thank you sweet readers.

———

As you can see, even in a small yard it takes time to make it what you want it to be.  Each spring season I try to add a little something, always keeping in mind to keep things simple and meaningful.  When I invest into our little yard to make it cozy, I am investing in an area where slow living as a family can take place.  THAT, my friends, is priceless!

Staying Connected In Your Marriage Through Changes

Staying Connected through Changes.png

by Cassie Celestain | Marriage Contributor

Staying Connected through Changes

My husband, Ryan, over the past few months has had his responsibilities change at work. He is now overseeing more projects and stepping up into a leadership role. We also just passed our 32 week mark on our first pregnancy. With these two things going on I have started to feel some changes taking place in our life. And I know when baby comes that will be a big change too!

Through this change with Ryan’s work and our pregnancy we have been trying very hard to make sure we stay connected. We believe we are each other’s support system and no matter what adjustments our life begins to make we must have a solid foundation at home and with each other. Having that stable base between us allows us to go into the world and conquer so much more than we could without it!

“Changes” can be anything from career moves to physical moves, from sickness to regained health, from family issues to big family monuments. All of these things can create a large amount of change in our lives.

Here are four ways to stay connected with your husband through these changes:

Accept the Change– These alterations in our life can be hard to get used to. We can even have negative feelings about how it is effecting our life. The first thing we must do as a couple is accept the changes (assuming they cannot be helped or the couple has decided that the changes are the best choice). Being on the same team about the changes taking place is the best way to stay connected through them.

Daily Interactions When our life is starting to be modified it often takes time to get into a new routine. We must make an effort to have daily interactions with our husband even through this phase. Finding time to  connect when busy can be difficult, but it needs to be done! Some can have daily interactions together with a cup of coffee in the morning or some at dinner. Some even get their daily connection at the very end of the day as they are in bed next to each other. This daily interaction leads to our next point of having real conversations.

Real Conversations Having these real conversations allow you both to know how the other is feeling or coping with the differences taking place.  Communication about tough topics may need to happen as well. Just know these real conversations continue to draw you closer together!

Discuss Needs– This one is personally hard for me. Sometimes it is necessary to let our husband know our needs. No beating around the bush or giving hints, but flat out saying what we need. Sometimes this includes me saying I feel that I need more of his focused attention when he is at home or even a task I can’t complete on my own. Other times it is the need for a date night or cuddles. We must be open and honest about our needs through these changes taking place.

Although life events can seem as if they are drawing us away from our husbands there are ways for us to help ease through those transition times. With a commitment to stay connected with our husbands we can do just that by keeping the four above things in mind. Remember staying connected does take time, energy and effort. But it is completely worth it!

What changes have you and your husband gone through where you had to focus on staying connected?

New Website Design Launch

New Site Pic 1

I am so very excited to finally have launched my new website design!  It has taken much planning, organizing, simplifying & designing, but I think it turned out amazing.  I hope you think so too!

You might have noticed my postings have been scarce lately, and now I can tell you why!  I’ve been a bit busy behind the scenes.

Let me show you around!

New-Nostalgia-Header-arrows

You will notice a much more simple header.  Yes, I still love my grey circles, so had to keep one.  Look up in the upper left corner of the header and check out the ‘New Here’ page. Even if you are not new, you might enjoy reading about where we have come from and where we are going.  You can also see our awesome contributing team on that page.  My ‘About Amy’ page tells you all about me, just in case you don’t know enough already!

Take some time clicking on my socialize buttons.  I would love it if you followed me on Facebook, tweet with me, mosey through my pins on Pinterest or see what the Bowman family has been up to on Instagram.  So much community happens on these sites, and I’d love to see you there!

If you ever get lost on the new site and want to find your way back to the home page, just click on the big round ‘New Nostalgia’ button in the header.

If you want to quick look for something you found on New Nostalgia, but can’t find again, click the little magnifying glass to the right of the menu bar to search the site.

The menu bar now has 6 categories.  If you click on one of those categories, they have subcategories that are laid out in grid style, each post showing off with a featured photo.  This is where it gets exciting!

Here are the 6 categories, what they are about, and their subcategories:

New-Nostalgia-Categories-arrows

For the above screen, I clicked on Slow Living.  Gardening is the first subcategory of Slow Living.  If you keep scrolling you will see the rest of the subcategories for this menu item.  I am a very visual person, so organizing the most recent posts of each category by grid and graphic makes me giddy!

As you can see in the photo above, I also have socialize buttons and the right under my profile picture and welcome in the sidebar.  I want to keep those front and center because I want you all to use them!

New-Nostalgia-Recipes-arrows

The above photo shows you where to click to see my Recipe Index.  This is where my recipes are organized alphabetically, according to course.  It also shows some of our more popular categories at New Nostalgia linked in the sidebar.

New-NOstalgia-sidebar-arrows

If  you keep scrolling down the page, you will see a big square button that invites you to follow me on Pinterest.  Why don’t you click on it?  Go ahead…I will wait.

Under that are some fun circle buttons, the one that says ‘Recipes’ is another quick way you can get to my recipe index.  The ‘#livingnew’ button is a fun NEW series I will be doing on how to live new. The popular posts button is a nice way for newbie visitors to find the best posts. A.P. Tuesdays is my weekly Anti-Procrastination Tuesday link party-a party that everyone is invited to every week–come to Be Encouraged, Be Inspired & Get Something Done!

New-Nostalgia-footer-arrows

Last but not least, the footer.  The footer is at the very bottom of the site.  I will have some great featured posts there.  I will be switching them up from time to time, so keep and eye out for that.

There is one more opportunity to socialize, my terms of use, AND…TAKE NOTE…the AMAZING Nudge Media.  Nudge Media made this whole redesign happen and has made this site all that I dreamed for it to be and more.  Check out Nudge Media for some of the most amazing blog templates I have ever seen!

I hope you all love the site. We will be continuing to make it as good as it can be in the coming days. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and THANK YOU for always coming along with me on as I pursue what it means to do this #livingnew thing!

Investing Properly In Our Marriages

From our Monthly Contributor, Cassie at True Agape:
With the busy lives that many of us lead we want to make sure that our time and energy is used in the best possible way. This includes in our marriages as well. We want to ensure that what we are doing for our marriages are beneficial and helpful, rather than just something we do in hopes of bettering our relationship.
I believe if we focus our time and energy to these three areas it will indeed grow our marriages and be mutually beneficial to us and our spouses’.
1.) Know your man’s Love Language- In my previous post “5 Love Languages to Create a Successful Marriage” I explained the philosophy behind the Love Languages and the importance of speaking your spouse’s. In short, your husband may feel loved in different ways than you are showing him love. If you are not speaking his Love Language, he may still appreciate your effort, but sadly you are not getting the most out of your efforts. Knowing and speaking his Love Language is more effective and will draw you two closer together.

2.) Nurture your relationship- Nurture means “to encourage growth.” As couples we have weaknesses. For some couples that might be communication, finances, amount of quality time or lack of spontaneity. Spend time encouraging growth in those areas. Developing strength in our weak areas helps us feel stronger and more well balanced as a couple.
3.) Work on a goal together- Have you ever set a goal for yourself, worked extremely hard to succeed and then reaped the benefits afterwards? If so, you know all the pride and accomplishment you felt and the growth that took place during the process. Just think how much it would change your relationship if you got to go through that process with your significant other! While working on goals as one unit we can encourage each other, challenge one another and provide accountability. Through the process we become closer, but we also draw on our success for things we want to work on in the future. You start to realize the power of two people!
In our marriages there are a lot of things that we can attempt to put time, energy and effort into. But sometimes we need to reevaluate to see if that time, energy and effort are truly serving our marriages in a positive way. I truly believe that if we spend time ensuring the three above things our relationships with our husbands will grow tremendously. Often in ways we never imagined!
Share with us in the comments if doing any of these three things has already enhanced your marriage!

My 3 Girls Minus Their Curls & True Beauty

{2009}
I love #throwbackthursdays.  It is so great to reminisce and look back at what a beautiful life I have been blessed with and just how precious every moment has been.
This photo was taken in the late summer of 2009, right after I gave my girls their back-to-school haircuts and took the time to straighten out their curls.  We even put fun chunky low-lights in Teagan’s hair that day, which was a big, fun deal to her at age 10!
Little did we know that their Mommy would also be ‘minus her curls’  and would get quite the haircut exactly a year later, in late summer 2010.  Chemotherapy is not so kind in giving the best of haircuts, but it did teach me that hair is just hair, change is ok, and outward beauty is shown in so many different ways, and comes from the inside.
My 3 lovelies are now 11, 13 & 14.
They are key ages, building their identity and embracing who God made them to be. I watch their beautiful lives and their struggle to resist the message this world gives them that beauty is all-important. It bombards them, in their face everywhere they turn.  This society they are growing up in is so messed up, unfair, and full of lies in defining true beauty.  Let us speak truth just as loud!

To my 3 sweet lovelies:

I swoon every time I look at you. You are all 3 so very beautiful inside and out.
Oh how I want you to see this!

If only I could hold up mirror that only allowed you to see yourself how God sees you. He sees you through the filter of His Son’s sacrifice.  No flaws, pure, washed, lovely, made in His image.  His amazing creation, one that He smiles at & rejoices over!

In the above verse, Proverbs 31:30, it talks about the woman who fears the Lord is the woman who is to be praised for her true beauty.

This fear is not:

“dreadful anxiety in which someone is frightened by the clear and present danger that is represented by another person. It’s not the kind of fear that a slave would have at the hands of a malicious master who would come with the whip and torment the slave. Servile refers to a posture of servitude toward a malevolent owner.”

Rather, it is a fear that:

refers to the fear that a child has for his father… a child who has tremendous respect and love for his father or mother and who dearly wants to please them. He has a fear or an anxiety of offending the one he loves, not because he’s afraid of torture or even of punishment, but rather because he’s afraid of displeasing the one who is, in that child’s world, the source of security and love. {source}

God is your security.  He is pure and true love.  He only wants what is best for you and has a plan for you that is beyond what you can imagine!  He wants to smother you with gifts & moments of pure delight, and give you a peace that is hard to comprehend until you experience it.

This is what I want you to fear…fear missing out on your Creator’s best for you!  Draw close to Him and get to know Him so well that you will KNOW how beautiful and lovely He is, and how beautiful and lovely YOU are.

We are girls and it is a delight to straighten curls or make them bounce.  It is much fun to polish nails and make a skirt float as we twirl.  There is freedom in these things and so much girly fun!

But…when those fun things are used to cover up pain or dislike for ourselves, there is no longer fun freedom.

When you look at your own physical blemishes and scars, may it remind you of how Jesus has scars, and those scars are what frees us from any shame and guilt that we place on ourselves.  When you see your imperfections, remember who made you and Who delights in you, exactly how you are, no matter what.

Run from shame.  Shut down the negative and condemning thoughts. Run from accusation, for we know who the Accuser is.  Flee and don’t listen.

Turn your ear to only truth.  Listen close.  Replace lies with truth. Believe.  Choose to fear God –a healthy fear. Not one that looks for approval, but one who knows the most Famous One fully approves!  Allow this knowledge to gently and continuously push you toward true beauty.

Run.
Flee.
Look Up.
Healthy Fear.
Listen.
Find Freedom.
Straighten or Bounce a Curl.
Do a Twirl.
I Love You More’n,
Mom

Ensuring Quality Time During Long Distance

From our Monthly Contributor, Cassie at True Agape:

If Quality Time is your spouse’s or your own primary Love Language long distance can be hard to endure through. In this day and age there are many reasons why couples may have to deal with stints of long distance during their marriages including work or treatments for illnesses. Good news is there are ways to stay connected and have Quality Time even though physically you are far apart!
Ensuring Quality Time with long distance is still done the same way as if you were in person as far as having dedicated attention, focused conversation and good activities. It just takes a bit more creativity and imagination!
If you and your spouse are long distance for any amount of time try these ideas:
1) Phone and Internet– Extend these times longer than you would normally spend. Quality
conversations can still take place. Make sure to stay focused on the person on the other end
rather than multitasking.

2) Write Letters– If there is distance for extended periods of time this is an option. In the letter let the person know you were thinking of them. When writing to someone or reading words from
someone there is a connection that is a lot like face to face time.

3) Do Something Together– Even though you are not physically together there are still ways to
connect. Read to each other on the phone, have dinner together over Skype, send a funny video link to share, or each of you take a picture that represents your day and send it to the other. These things can help you feel like you are still close and spending time together.

4) Make Plans– Together make some plans for when they arrive back home. This could be plans of a weekend at home, a date night idea or an up and coming vacation. Spend time talking about
being together, what it will feel like and what you will enjoy about it.
Although long distance can create a hardship on marriage if one of your Love Languages are Quality Time it can be minimized by these creative ideas. Continuing to have Quality Time in different ways is a must to make sure both of your love tanks are full during this time.
What are some ways you ensure Quality Time during long distance?

16 Easy Ways To Get Ready For A Hot Date

I have a hot date with my man tonight.  He asked me out via email this week which was pretty cute.

We are going out to dinner.  I am not sure where yet.  We have a few gift certificates to chose from thanks to my sweet Cali friend Karen and her hubs.  When I was sick and healing, they sent the most amazing love gift through the mail to our family.  It was a stack of gift cards, some to use as a family, some to use just for Todd and I.  It was an amazing gift and it has been so fun using them!

I have the afternoon free, and I thought it would be fun after a busy work week to just spend some time on me!  I want to look nice for my sweet husband, and I love a chance to get dolled up.  I am a licensed cosmetologist and have not worked in the field for over 13 years, but that doesn’t keep me from wanting to use my skills every once in awhile!

Here are some of the things I am planning on doing.  I got all of the ideas from my Beauty Tips & Inspiration Boards at Pinterest.  The first few have been shared here at New Nostalgia, and the rest of them are great ideas found on Pinterest.  All links lead you to the pin, then the link. Make sure to repin if you are interested, and if you love them, follow the board!

You don’t have to be a professional to do any of these things, and many of them I do on a regular basis–like the 2 ingredient lemon scrub.

So here is what I plan on doing this afternoon:

(1) I will wash my face using the oil cleansing method, but first I will use my (2) 2 ingredient lemon scrub.  While that is on I will get out my go-to coconut oil and put it to work by putting it in my dry hair.  This is my (3) favorite moisturizing hair treatment using coconut oil.

While that is in, I will get out my blue mouth guard, and (4) whiten teeth for cheap.  This works and it has been way too long since I have done it.  I am a coffee and tea drinker, so I need to keep up on this to keep my pearly whites.

After I let the coconut oil sit in my hair awhile, before I get in the shower I will quickly (5) dry brush my skin–click through for why.  On my way into the shower I will grab my absolute favorite (6) coconut-lime sugar scrub, and use the shaving technique that I rave about in that post.  Before turning off the water and exiting the shower, I will use (7) coconut oil as a moisturizer.  I quick slather it on, then rinse it off.  It is so great to towel off and know my skin is already moisturized and there is no need for lotion.  Boom!  Big time- saver.

I will get out of the shower, comb and dry my hair, and (8) try this braided half-up half-down tutorial.  I want to (9) bobby pins that are brought to life with nail polish, for a bit of fun color and sparkle.  If the braided tutorial bombs, will fall back on my favorite (10) tutorial for a messy bun.

I’m going to (11) darken my eyebrows, I could not believe the before and after pics on the tutorial. I will use an eyebrow pencil, not dye.

I plan on wearing skinny jeans with heels, but if they are dirty–I’m so behind in laundry right now– I might try out this (12) tip for tucking non-skinny jeans into boots.  I have a pair of high heeled boots that I save for date nights.

I want to try and (13) tie my scarf like this, I have a grey sparkly, striped scarf that I think would work well. If I resort to the messy bun, I may ditch the neck (14) scarf and tie one around my bun like this.

I will (15) layer on my rings to pack a punch and (16) layer on bracelets for a bit of sparkle.  I have these in black & grey.

It sound like a lot, but I’m pretty good at getting ready fast, so it shouldn’t take too long.  Even if it does, we ladies need to spend some time for ourselves, and this is one way I like to do that!

What are your favorite ways to get ready for a date?
What are your favorite beauty tips?
