He Knows What Fills Me

We recently took a trip to Branson, Mo.  My in-laws treat our family to a beautiful family vacation every 2 years.  This is a gift that is just…beyond.  The joy these trips bring & the memories with brothers, sisters, parents and cousins are absolutely priceless. I can’t explain the gratitude I feel for this time with family.
I’m eager to share more of our family trip photos with you…here are a few to start.

A lake in Branson, MO

Who am I that you are mindful of me?

So many blessings as far as the eye can see.

Your creation speaks to me.

Your open hand holds gifts & you whisper “Delight in them, my child… I love you.”

Gifts of birds singing.  Chirps, tweets, & caws all singing in harmony, yet each taking its turn.

Gifts of calm waters reflecting early morning light.  Gentle ripples coming towards, bringing your love.

Surrounded by trees, fresh wet with rain, limbs cracking adding to the chorus.

Baby deer stare, also mindful of me.  Your creation creatures.

This place of rest, a cabin holding so many I love.  My deep love grows even deeper for them, the gift of people, my family.

Little niece in a polka dot robe, another holding her polka dot blankie, sleepy just waking.

Cousins gather at the crack of dawn, ready to fish with Grandpa.  Cereal spoons clinking making their own song as children sit staring, trying to wake up.

The noise leaves with Grandpa, parents left behind hold mugs of steaming strong coffee, a shared pot.

This gift of quiet shows how mindful you are of me.  You know what fills me.  You give me what I need and beyond.  You are the gift giver & your hands are full.  You offer, I receive.  I am grateful.

The Woman I Want To Be

Blogger Amy Bowman

A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it. Never spiteful, she treats him generously all her life long.

She senses the worth of her work, is in no hurry to call it quits for the day.

She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth, diligent in homemaking.

She’s quick to assist anyone in need, reaches out to help the poor.

…..and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.

When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, and she always says it kindly.

She keeps an eye on everyone in her household…

Her children respect and bless her; her husband joins in with words of praise: “Many women have done wonderful things, but you’ve outclassed them all!”

Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of- God. Give her everything she deserves! Festoon her life with praises! (Notes from Proverbs 31MSG)

—————–

I love this Proverb and it is the desire of my heart to be this woman.  Oh how often I fall short.  Thankful for grace, forgiveness, mercy and growth.

Finally, An Honest Company!

I’m pretty excited about a company that I have learned about called The Honest Company.  You may have already heard about it, as it has created quite a buzz in the non-toxic, eco-friendly world.  It is the company founded by the beautiful Jessica Alba.
I am always looking for products that are safe for my family.  The fewer chemicals, the better. So when I heard that this company started with a parent who was looking for the same thing, I was very interested in their products!
The Honest Company did not disappoint.  I have found their  non-toxic, eco-friendly products  are beautiful, effective and affordable.  Even their packaging is beautiful, yet environmentally friendly.

Homemade Leather Conditioner & Protector

I accidentally left my new leather wallet sitting on a baby wipe in my diaper bag. Because baby wipes are alkaline, it totally discolored my new wallet! I so wish I would have been motivated to whip up this homemade leather conditioner/protector BEFORE the fact. This recipe is super easy and keeps my leather looking fabulous.

Leather conditioner and protector ingredients

Homemade Leather Conditioner & Protector Recipe
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 Tbsp beeswax

Olive oil and beeswax

Combine olive oil and beeswax. Melt in the microwave 20 seconds at a time and stir in between. You can use it hot or at room temperature. I apply with a paper towel. Store in a cool, dark place.  Shelf life is the expiration date of your 2 ingredients.

Natural & Homemade Contributor

Kendra started her blog after her husband suffered from mono symptoms for over two years and his blood results showed some liver disease.  Since the liver is responsible for filtering out chemicals and toxins from the bloodstream, she started to realize how many chemicals are in everything we buy, from processed food to household cleaners, lotion, and even air freshener.  She has become inspired to rid her home of as many chemicals as she can, one product at a time, and write about it along the way.

You will love Kendra & all the great things she has to share!

Why you should eat your iron
1. Get your iron from plant foods. Plant foods are a great way to get iron.  Especially seeds like chia and hemp.  Iron in meat comes with cholesterol and calories.  Iron in seeds and plant foods/vegetables come with a whole host of amazing-ness for your body.  Anti-oxidants, phytochemicals & they are low calorie, too!
Here is a list of other plant foods high in iron:
1. Pumpkin seeds: 2 tbsp. = 8.6 mg
2. Spinach: 1 cup = 6.4 mg
3. Pine nuts: 2 tbsp. = 5.2 mg
4. Hemp seeds: 4.7 mg per 100 grams
5. Swiss chard: 1 cup = 4 mg
6. Figs: 10 figs = 4 mg
7. Sunflower seeds: 2 tbsp. = 3.8 mg
8. Parsley: 1 cup = 3.7 mg
9. Tomatoes: 1 cup = 3.4 mg
10. Coconut: 3.4 mg per 100 grams
11. Potatoes: 1 large = 3.2 mg
12. Beets & Beet greens: 1 cup = 2.7 mg
13. Sweet peas: 1 cup = 2.5 mg
14. Chia seeds: 1 oz. = 2.2 mg
15. Almonds: 2 tbsp. = 2 mg
16. Sprouts: 1 cup = 2 mg
17. Apricots: 10 apricots = 2 mg
18. Bok choy: 1 cup = 1.8 mg

21. Grapes: 1 cup = 1.2 mg
22. Broccoli: 1 cup = 1.1 mg
23. Avocado: 1 avocado = 1 mg
24. Brussels sprouts: 1 cup = 0.9 mg
25. Bananas: 1 banana = 0.5 mg

Food in baggies
2. Prepare smoothie ingredients ahead of time. These Ziploc Freezer Smoothie Bags are one of the most popular posts here at New Nostalgia and have been pinned on pinterest thousands of times.  When I have a freezer full of these, even my kids can grab one and go straight to the blender.  So fast and convenient.

Mason jar drink with lemon
3. Drink your way to weight loss! I made this great recipe after I saw a similar one on the Dr. Oz show.  He featured a recipe for Tangerine Mint Green Tea as part of a series of foods that help one lose weight.  He called it Tangerine “Weight-Orade.” It is another post of mine that has gone viral on pinterest, being pinned over and over. Thank you for that!

Detoxification bath
4. Take a detox bath. This is a great article on detox baths and all the benefits of them.  I personally take an epson salt/detox bath at least once a month, and did them a lot more often after I had radiation.  I feel a huge difference in my energy level the following day, but I always make sure to take them right before bed as they make me VERY relaxed & sleepy.

Foods to buy organic
5. Know which fruits and veggies retain the most pesticides. I refer to this list often, especially when I am buying fruits and vegetables for juicing and green smoothies.

Nutrient density index and scores

6. Read this book! My husband and I just finished reading Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s Eat To Live book.  It is one of the most impactful books I have ever read on eating and health.  It is life changing and simply spelled out what to eat and why.  Dr. Fuhrman encourages you to eat foods with high nutrient density.  The above graphic is an eye opening list of foods.  Plant foods rock!

7. Join this site. Last but not least, a site I have just learned about and am very excited about is Gaiam TV.  It is unlimited viewing of hundreds of yoga, health and fitness videos.  Exercise anytime, anywhere, with NO COMMERCIALS.  There is a free trial going on now, and you can continue on for $9.95 a month.  Much cheaper than a gym membership and so worth it when it comes to your health!  If you click the link and sign up, I will get a small referral percentage.  Thanks for looking!

Physical Health Comes Eighth – Purposeful Living

Todd Bowman blog

These posts written by Todd (Amy’s husband) are designed to model a system of purposeful living.  At least once a month, he spends time setting meaningful goals around one of seventeen core priorities.

If you missed it, consider reading the foundation post – Purposeful Living #1.

Correct Priority

Priority #8 – Physical Health

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor god with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Being physically healthy is not the most important element of personal health.  In fact, among the five core elements of personal health (spiritual, emotional, social, mental, physical), I have placed physical health last on the list. In my list of priorities, I have it as number eight.

I view all personal health first through the lens of how effectively it enables us to be in proper relationship with others.  God has called us to love our people, and being a healthy person better enables us to love people.

In the specific area of physical health, I know many people who are overweight or sick, yet are able to have profound positive impact in the lives of others because they are spiritually and emotionally healthy.

With this caveat out of the way, it is still extremely important and there are many benefits to being physically healthy, and that is why it is number eight on my list of correct priorities.

Having stamina and energy to fully engage with people and with life is a benefit.  Living as many years as possible to care for and enjoy family and friends is a benefit.

I imagine someone who is extremely sick, debilitated, or battling a life-threatening illness would give just about anything to regain physical health. I watched my wife fight cancer, and I saw this first hand. A healthy body is precious gift.  It is something to be valued and cared for.

In addition to personal benefits, we have a responsibility and a duty to be physically healthy.  Our bodies are the dwelling place of God and He desires that we care for them.

For me, physical health includes the components listed below.

Weight
Nutrition
Sleep
Aerobic Conditioning
Strength Training

Like many people, I am doing well in some areas of physical health, okay in other areas, and poorly in a few areas.

Future posts will detail where I am currently in regards to physical health, goals to improve, and hopefully details about how I have managed to improve my physical health.

Vinegar-Free Homemade Glass & Floor Cleaner

homemade glass and floor cleaner

Most homemade glass/floor cleaner recipes call for vinegar. And I can see why. It’s inexpensive. It kills germs. It’s safe enough to drink. But if you can’t even use it because your husband and kids won’t stop complaining about the smell, it’s just not going to work. So I switched to an alcohol-based recipe that no one has complained about yet! I think it works better than vinegar and water, which left streaks when I used it. It’s super easy to make and it only cost me $0.86 for 24 oz! Streak-free, smell-free, and stress-free. What’s not to love?

Vinegar-Free Homemade Glass & Floor Cleaner Recipe

16 oz. water
4 oz. vodka
10-20 drops essential oils (optional)

I used the cheapest vodka I could find. Lately I’ve been loving pine essential oil in my homemade cleaners for the “clean” aroma and extra disinfecting power.

What homemade cleaners do you make?
