Homemade Face Moisturizer

I’m pretty excited about this Homemade Face Moisturizer.  I’ve been using it for about a week and I’m loving how my skin is looking and feeling.  I especially love that I know exactly what is in it, and that each ingredient is pure and good for the skin.

I recycled a dropper container that is a great reminder to me of the money I am saving by making my own Face Moisturizer.  The face product that was in that bottle previously costs about $30.00!

The recipe was linked up to my Anti-Procrastination Tuesday Link Party from the awesome Rebekah at Potholes and Pantyhose.  She did a great, month- long series on homemade products, which is where I got this recipe.  She did a price workup of this and a 2.5 ounce bottle is $.75 cents!  Now that’s a deal! (Click through for the price breakdown.)

Homemade Face Moisturizer
4 Tbsp 100% Aloe Vera Juice (the drinkable kind)
1 tsp Vegetable Glycerine
6 drops Jojoba Oil
1/4 tsp Sweet Almond Oil

1 Container to keep the moisturizer in.

Measure all into container.  You may need to use a funnel.

Before each use, shake well.  This is not a creamy product, it is quite watery.  Apply using a cotton pad or your clean fingertips.  It will take a minute to dry, but as it does, it will absorb and leave you with soft, silky smooth skin!

If you need more moisture, just add a bit more of the oils until you get the level your specific skin type needs.  The above recipe was just perfect for mine.

Here is some information for each product used in this recipe, from Rebekah’s research:

Aloe Vera Gel
here are just a few things it does besides cool sunburn: kills bacteria, virus and fungus.  The salicylic acid in aloe vera also acts as a pain killer.  That explains why it’s so soothing for burns.  It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Vegetable Glycerin
A topical remedy for a number of skin problems, including psoriasis, rashes, burns, bedsores & cuts.

Jojoba Oil
Provides all day moisture to skin. Jojoba oil doesn’t evaporate like water based moisturizers can.  It is theorized, but not yet proven, that because jojoba oil is so similar to human skin oil, it can “trick” the skin into thinking it has produced enough oil and thus balance oil production.  It is very stable, jojoba oil does not become rancid or lose antioxidants even after long periods of storage.  It spreads well and is absorbed well. The organic variety is free of pesticides, GMO’s and is sustainably farmed.

Sweet Almond Oil
Almond oil is an excellent emollient and moisturizer.  As an emollient it nourishes and softens the skin helping to keep it smooth to the touch.  Almond oil is similar in composition to the oil baby’s excrete to keep their skin and hair healthy.  This composition is beneficial to protecting and conditioning your skin no matter your age.  By helping the skin stay healthy it promotes a youthful skin complexion.  Almond oil is frequently used to treat dry skin.  It relieves itchiness, soreness, rashes, dryness, irruption and burns.  Almond oil aides the skin in keeping the proper balance of moisture in the skin which is critical when treating dry skin.

I would experiment. I think it would be ok. Consistency might change depending on the temperature of your house with coconut oil as it solidifies at I think 74 degrees.

I really enjoy seeing almond oil in recipes. I use it a lot in my own books (http://www.amazon.com/Mia-Gordon/e/B00CKMD9XQ/) because it’s so light and easily absorbed by skin. It also doesn’t leave a greasy or oily feeling which is why it’s one of my favorites. It’s also a good choice if you have oily skin or dry and irritated skin. It’s really soothing and feels great even after you wash it out. Hope this helps and thanks for sharing! 🙂

want to add some information modest !
You can use oatmeal as if it were a soap substitute, for instance. Tie little bit of mixture oatmeal into a flannel or hanky, then dunk it within the water, squeeze the surplus water out and so use it a bit like you’d use a typical flannel for a pleasant soothing impact.

I believe I recognize the container as one from Avon’s Anew line; I have the same bottle which I saved and would like to re-use. But how did you get the paint off to make the bottle clear?? The labeling on mine is actually painted on, thickly. I tried rubbing it off with nail polish remover but it didn’t budge. What did you do?

I have the same question– basically — as “Purple” on 9/27/12. I bought the “drinkable kind of aloe vera” in a health food store (that’s the wording I used). So I got a liquid aloe vera. But I’m wondering if I shouldn’t have bought the gel. Following the recipe exactly, I find that the moisturizer is very runny and it feels like I’m just putting water on my face. I’ve used this moisturizer 2 days now and have each time slathered it on, then put another single drop of almond oil in my palm and rubbed that all over my face. That seemed to do the trick in making my skin feel moisturized. It felt pretty amazing actually, after I added a tiny bit more oil to my face. Applied my usual makeup and all day had no oily breakthrus like I’ve had recently with other moisturizers.

So… do I just need to change my formula slightly to include a bit more oil or should I use aloe vera gel? Thanks.

Yes, this recipe is very watery. If your skin does better with more oil then yes, add it. That is what i love about this…you can kind of custom mix it for your skin type.

So cool that your breakouts are behaving with using this…good to hear feedback!

Okay, I have been using this moisturizer for a couple of months now. I have fair dry skin that is *aging*. Yes, we all do get older. lol I love this stuff! It is just wonderful. I do have a question, though. The recipe calls for drinkable AV juice, which I have been using both for the moisturizer and to make fruit smoothies with. (Helps with the arthritis in my hands.) BUT in the information you give on the ingredients, you list AV GEL, which made me think: has anyone made the moisturizer using gel rather than juice? How has it performed? Any pointers for using the gel? And now I might just answer all my own questions, since I just bought a bottle of gel to use in making hand sanitizer. Think I will go do that now. Any thoughts?

I used the drinkable kind, not gel…but I wonder if gel might feel better as it is thicker. Did you try it out? Let us know!

What’s good about homemade facial moisturizers is you know that its truly safe for you. There are many moisturizers developed today, they maybe effective but mostly are not safe for the skin. Your products are inspiring.. What a job well done!

I’ve developed rosacea after my second daughter was born and heard “rose hip oil” can help calm it. I’ll definitely try this recipe with rose hip oil added! 🙂 To the other Traci Bowman: for body lotion, I make my own coconut oil body butter by whipping coconut oil for 6-8 minutes with my KitchenAid (on high w/ whisk attachment). FANTASTIC! But coconut oil melts at 76 degrees, so in the summer, it’s very liquidy (I still love/use it anyway). – Lisa

    June 29, 2012 at 5:25 pm

Yes, health food store for supplies.

Not sure about refrigeration. The aloe juice says to refrigerate after opening, but I have not refrigerated it and it is fine so far. Rebekah where the recipe came from didn’t refrigerate her, either.

I definitely want to try the homemade moisturizer. Where do you get vegetable glycerin? I am guessing this and the oils are available at a health food store…?

Bought veg glycerin at The Vitamin Shoppe, just made and started using the moisutrizer, very good under makeup – not oily or greasey. Washing skin in the morning using honey and a little water. At night use OCM – cold pressed castor oil and jojobaoil. Apply and then put a hot facecloth on your face for a minute, then wipe oil off. Face is staying soft and blemish free!
