To Flu Shot or Not To Flu Shot

I sit in a quiet house, and I’m not really sure how I feel about that!  My introverted self usually embraces quiet, craves it, really.  But the last 3 weeks I have been around those I hold most dear, my 3 girls and husband, pretty much 24/7!  We had a wonderful, 2 week family vacation to Orlando Disney, but brought Influenza A back with us, so we have spent the last week together in this house trying to get healthy.  We have had lots of sweet time together, which makes being alone feel strange.

{watching Karate Kid and eating chicken noodle soup with my Lil’ one}

It has been a really long time since I have had sick kids.  They used to be sick ALL THE TIME, but changing our eating habits and taking supplements have really kept them out of the Doctors office for years.  They have had a cold here or there, but it was gone quickly and they would barely skip a beat.  Our last 3 days at Disney, we ate a whole bunch of junk & I got out of the habit of making them take supplements, AND we all shared a water bottle each day at the park.  Enter Influenza A.

Influenza A = a very humbled Amy.

My word, this sickness hit us HARD and fast.  High fevers for 4 days is just miserable in itself, but add body aches, sore throats & THE COUGHING!  I had to laugh at times listening to the sounds of my home–duets, trios and quartets of coughs.  It was nuts!

I have to admit that I was pretty surprised my immune system didn’t kick in faster.  It made me realize I can rely too much on doing what I think is important to stay healthy instead of putting my faith in God to keep us healthy.  It also reminded me that yes, I am a home remedy girl, but I believe there is a time and place for medication.

I was going on day 5 of high fever, and Doctor decided prescribe Tamiflu for me since I am high risk of complications due to radiation to my chest area.  My fever broke just a few hours after taking my first Tamiflu, and I felt so much better once I was on that medication.  It was such relief.  Honestly, I felt like Influenza was laughing at my herbal tea efforts…it didn’t make me feel better at all.  Echinecea tea is great for colds, I’m sipping on it right now for a secondary sinus infection, but Influenza is a whole different ballgame.

Another example of medicine being necessary was for my Lil One.  She was the first with symptoms, poor thing had to fly home with a fever of 103.  Anytime she gets a cold or allergy, she immediately struggles with asthma.  She had RSV as a baby and has always struggled with breathing when sick.  She came out of the influenza quite well, 4 days and she was doing good, except for a lingering cough.  It was an asthmatic cough, deep and constant.  It made no sense that this cough was so bad when her fever had been gone a few days, so I took her back to the Doctor, and we found out she had an pretty nasty ear infection!  This is what was causing drainage which was triggering her asthmatic cough.  I agreed, reluctantly, to antibiotics…and I am so glad I did.  My baby had relief within 24 hours of taking them.  Her cough stopped, she slept through the night, and was able to go to school today.

{pause} I know I have readers that would be horrified that I gave my child antibiotics.  I also know I have readers that would be horrified if I didn’t!  Just know I am grateful for ALL my readers and look forward to the comments on this post. {unpause}

So, I believe there is a place for medication.  I am extremely thankful for our Doctors, nurses & their expertise.  I also believe there is a place for alternative ways to treat illness, which I am using now (and will write more about in a future post) for a secondary sinus infection that I have developed.  I have a Doctor appointment tomorrow and will have her prescribe some antibiotics just in case, but I have a feeling that I won’t need that prescription. I am quite convinced that I am killing this infection with some awesome home remedies.  I don’t want to speak too soon, but there are some things that I am doing that seem to be working! We shall see…and I shall share, soon!

I saved the best for last.

The Flu Shot.

Quite controversial.

I had (and still might have) a belief that high enough levels of Vitamin D in our bodies are just as protective as a Flu vaccine, and safer.  Because of this belief, we have not had flu shots in over 5 years, and we have never had the flu, until now.  But, we also got the flu it when our Vitamin D levels were low, due to not supplementing while on vacation.

I have to be honest with you and tell you, I have no idea if we will be getting the flu vaccine next year or not.  I DO know I never want Influenza A again, or to watch my kids suffer through it.  I will also say, that a couple other things made me pause and reconsider my beliefs.

Our kids had to wear masks in the Doctors office after we were diagnosed.  The nurse who came in also had one on.  When the Doctor came in, she did not, AND she didn’t flinch when fact to face with my girls examining them, and they were coughing all over her (masks were off.)  I said she was brave, and she looked at me and said…”oh no worries, I have had the flu vaccine.”  Here is a lady who has been a Doctor for years, who is around Influenza, the beast, all the time, and was not worried a bit.  Made me pause.

Another thing that made me rethink my stance was a comment from a reader.  She said she worked in the medical community for 15 years, got the flu shot every year, and has never had the flu.  One more example– my Mother-in-Law gets the shot every year and has never had the flu.

So, what are your thoughts?  I am eager to hear your opinions in the comment section. Do you get the flu shot?  Have you heard flu shot controversy?

 I know we will have diverse opinions, because New Nostalgia’s readership is quite diverse, so let’s all be respectful and learn from one another.

Help! We Have Influenza A!

As most of you know, my family just got back from an awesome Disney trip.  Well, guess what we brought back with us?  Good ol’ Influenza A.

My little on got sick on the plane, spiked a fever & looked awful.  After a day of traveling back home, 3 out of 5 of us were sick.

{Influenza A Eyes}

I knew right away that what we had was more than a cold.  The symptoms made us (and are still making us) miserable.  I am on day 3 of a high fever.  Our coughs are out of control and our bodies and heads ache!  It is so sad to feel what my little ones are feeling at the same time.  I know how bad I feel, and it breaks my heart that they are feeling the same way, ESPECIALLY on Halloween!  No trick or treating for 2 of my girls.  Sad!

Here is where I need your help.  I am going to open a link up below, and would love you to link up any of your favorite home remedies or recipes, or simply just tips for me, that you rely on when sickness hits your home.  You can also leave links in the comments for me.  I will take all the advice I can get!

Clean A White Sink Without Bleach

How to Clean a White Sink Without Bleach–A guest post from Kendra at Our Homemade Happiness

When we first moved into our apartment, I thought the white sink was a beautiful piece in our all-white kitchen. Little did I know, white kitchen sinks do not stay white and beautiful very long. I used to think Soft Scrub with Bleach was the only way to keep my white sink white. I’ve since figured out a couple easy ways to keep my sink white without toxic chemicals.

A simple scrub made with baking soda and dish soap works great. First, I dry my sink because baking soda will dissolve on a wet sink. Then I sprinkle a little baking soda in my sink, add a couple drops of dish soap, and scrub with a scrubber until it comes clean. Sarah over at Nature’s Nurture uses salt and baking soda to scrub her sink, so add some salt if baking soda/dish soap isn’t cutting it. I also use this baking soda scrub and a scrub brush to clean my textured bathtub.

If there are still some stubborn stains that won’t come off, I add a few drops of tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide, or lemon juice to the baking soda scrub to whiten the sink. Then I scrub a little more. You may need to let the tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide, or lemon juice sit on the stain for a bit depending on how bad it is.

If I’m in a hurry, I use a Magic Eraser instead of the baking soda scrub. I know, I know, it’s not “green,” but I like that it doesn’t have cleaners in it. It’s the scrubber’s texture that gets stains off. It really does seem magical since stains and marks come off so quickly. It works on bathtubs, walls, floors, and appliances too. I buy a generic version at Walmart for $.72/scrubber, but you can also find them on Amazon for about $1/scrubber. On Pinterest today, I found this pin about a generic version on ebay that’s way cheaper. Coolness!

These methods also work on stainless steel sinks. How do you keep your kitchen sink clean without harsh chemicals?

So Happy You Are Here
Hi, I’m Kendra!  I blog about all things homemade, especially cleaners, skincare, and healthy eating.  I started my blog, Our Homemade Happiness, after my husband suffered from mono symptoms for over two years and his blood results showed some liver disease.  Since the liver is responsible for filtering out chemicals and toxins from the bloodstream, I started to realize how many chemicals are in everything we buy, from processed food to household cleaners, lotion, and even air freshener.  I’ve become inspired to rid my home of as many chemicals as I can, one product at a time, and blog about it along the way.

Seventy Times Seven

The song in the video below made me think, and honestly, I didn’t want to.  I just wanted to plug my ears and ignore it…

…these lyrics:
“This is love.  This is hate.  We have a choice to make.”
Does this mean if I’m not choosing to love, then I am choosing to hate?
Ouch.
To often I wait around to make the choice until my emotions change.  I sit around in my funk and wait until I feel like being forgiving.  I wait until I feel like the person I have issues with is acting like one who deserves to be loved or at least acts in a way to make it easier to love them.  But this is not the way of Jesus.
His Word says:
Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.
He says when asked how many times to forgive:
“Not seven, but seventy times seven.”
It is not natural.  It doesn’t feel right.  It doesn’t feel good.
Yet, it is the way of Jesus, and I call myself a Christ- follower.  Who and what am I following really?  Love? Or hate?
And these lyrics:
“Give me grace to forgive them, cuz I feel like the one losing”
It has to be from Him, His grace, for me to take a step and swallow my pride and choose to love.  To face the real possibility of rejection.  To be brave enough to love despite not feeling loved, resting in the One who loves completely.  Is His love enough?  Do I grasp just how amazing His love is?  Do I rest enough in it that I allow it to fill the void, the breaks that happen to my heart from others who are also just needing grace and their cracks filled up, too?
Thank goodness God doesn’t wait to love me until I am acting like one who deserves to be loved.  Why do I think this is ok for me to do this to another?

5 Minute Fridays

Welcome + 5 Minute Friday

Five Minute Friday

This week I’ve decided to join Lisa-Jo Baker’s 5 Minute Friday.

“Where a beautiful crowd spends five minutes all writing on the same topic and then sharing ‘em over here. Where we just write without worrying if it’s just right or not.
She gives a new word each week, and for just 5 minutes we write.  No extreme editing; no worrying about perfect grammar, font, or punctuation.  No perfectionism.
Unscripted, Unedited. Real
This weeks word?
“WELCOME”
GO

“Who’s at my door?” said in a sing song voice by a woman I have long admired.  One I want to be just like when I grow up.

We used meet regularly at her home, sweet memories full of family and food.  She would welcome us all, but her most special welcomes were reserved for the wee ones.  They always knew that Nana would welcome them with a smile, a hug and a “Who’s at my door?”

This is the first thing that came to mind when I thought of the word “Welcome.”  I can just see this lovely, saying her greeting as she opens the door, always followed by a hug.  The best of welcomes.

I would like to have my own welcome phrase, said to those who are most special to me when they come to my door.  Maybe it doesn’t have to be a phrase, maybe just a feeling.  And maybe it does not have to be to just those who are most special, but how about all?  Errr…even those I don’t want to open my door to? Hmm.

I wonder– how do I make those who visit my home feel when they come in?  Do I take just a moment to look in their eyes and smile with mine, letting them know they are seen, important and welcomed?

What about the most familiar faces that come through my door?  My husbands.  My daughters…

I decide to think about my own signature welcome.  Might I find my own way of showing them my open heart and a home that is theirs, where, like no other place, they can feel the most welcome.

Better Than A Hallelujah

“Better Than A Hallelujah” by Amy Grant
We pour out our miseries…God just hears a melody
Ultimately, God desires communion with us.  Relationship.
Not pasted smiles and raised hands and a forced “Hallelujah”
He wants us to come to Him raw and real.
Sometimes raised hands, smiles, and Hallelujahs are what is real.
Beautiful moments when we can’t help ourselves.
But other times, pounding fists and cries of “why?” and “help!!” are all we can give.
He wants those moments of ours, too.
Who better to take our fits to, who better to call out to, but the God of the Universe who can actually
do something with them?

Last night I had a session of crying out to my Lord. I took a young lady whom I have grown to love so very much home, and the minute she and her friend stepped out of my car, a lump in my throat formed. I hurt for her.  I tell my Lord how hard it is to know the pain of a 13 year old girl who lost her Mommy to cancer. How amazing it is that she excitedly tells me her plans to honor her Mom as it has been almost exactly a year. What strength! How hard it is to know that this past year, she has had to be stronger than I could ever imagine being.
While it was still summer, she sings a song to me, one written for her Mom.  In it, she repeats over and over her desire to make her Mom proud.  It is the desire of her heart, a passionate, desperate desire.
Z-I KNOW your Mom would be so proud.  She would be so proud of the smiles you give and joy you bring.  She would be proud of that feisty spirit in you that yes, at times can make you stumble but you always get back up and gain perspective.  She would be so proud of your willingness to learn and grow.  She would love how you laugh at yourself, how you so vulnerably express sadness, how much you light up when you talk about her, how often you talk about her.

She would be so proud of your nomination for the Empowerment program, of how your teachers have seen the leadership qualities in you despite your difficult year.

There is no question in my mind. She would be so proud.
I cried a few tears to release the lump.  I accept that which I cannot understand.  I know I am heard.

Coconut Oil as a Moisturizer + 6 More Ways I Use it in my Beauty Routine

I am a HUGE fan of coconut oil, for many reasons, but today I’m just going to focus on why I love coconut oil for my skin.  I have been using it in place of lotion as a body moisturizer for about a year now and I LOVE IT!

The main reason I started doing this was because I read about how so many body lotions contain parabens and chemicals, and with my cancer history, I am being very purposeful about getting rid of as many toxins in this house and on my body as possible!

Its been all over the news that they are finding parabens in the breast cancer survivors breast tissue.  My ears perked up with this because I have been in the beauty business for years as a cosmetologist, and parabans seem to be in EVERY beauty product.  I have also met way too many young hairstylists that also battled breast cancer, and it has made us all say “hmm.”
Parabens are a group of compounds widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, including underarm deodorants. Parabens are absorbed through intact skin and from the gastrointestinal tract and blood.
Measurable concentrations of six different parabens have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors (Darbre, 2004). The particular parabens were found in relative concentrations that closely parallel their use in the synthesis of cosmetic products (Rastogi, 1995). Parabens have also been found in almost all urine samples examined from a demographically diverse sample of U.S. adults (Ye, 2006a).
Parabens are estrogen mimickers, with the potency of the agonistic response being related to the chemical structure (Darbre, 2008). They can bind to the cellular estrogen receptor (Routledge, 1998). They also increase the expression of many genes that are usually regulated by estradiol and cause human breast tumor cells (MCF-7 cells) to grow and proliferate in vitro (Byford, 2002; Pugazhendhi, 2007). Nevertheless, parabens as a class do not fully mimic estradiol in the changes in cellular gene expression nor are the effects of all parabens identical (Sadler, 2009).
    Parabens are estrogen mimickers.”  This really made me pause, as my cancer and the majority of breast cancers are fed by hormones.  I had symptoms of estrogen dominance for years and I often wonder if this contributed to my diagnosis.
    As I have been trying to avoid parabens, I have been on a kick of making my own beauty products. There are some wonderful healthy organic body products out there, but they usually end up costing “an arm and a leg,” so have been quite motivated to make my own or to figure out a simple, inexpensive & healthy alternative.
    {even the Stars use it!}
    Here are a few ways I have been using coconut oil on my skin:
    1. I use it to shave.  I wrote about this here.  I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to shave with a natural product.  I no longer have bumps, and my pores are nice and small now.  No irritation!  It makes sense…when I read what is in those cans of shaving cream, I am not surprised that my skin reacts with little bumps and irritation!  Especially when one slathers it on, then takes a razor that makes little nicks in the skin for those irritants to penetrate even deeper.  Blech.

    {my fav razor is a Mach 3 Gillette.  I have been using it for years.  Even with all the fancy smancy lady like razors out there, I still prefer my Gillette.  Yes, the refill blades are expensive, but they last forever and I love how close of a shave I get with this razor!  Plus, I have a thing for black and silver…}
    2. I use it as body oil to slather on while still in the shower.  This is my last step of my shower.  Then when I towel off I am super soft and there is no need for body moisturizer.
    3. I use it as a body moisturizer.  On days I do not shower or use it in the shower, I will use it in place of lotion.  Especially on my legs before a hot date with my Todd.  It gives a great glow.
    4.  Just recently, I have been using it as a facial cleanser.  Yep, you read that right.  It is called the “oil cleansing method.”  You can read about it here at Sorta Crunchy.  The whole idea of it is that cleansers strip moisture, and then your body over produces oil to make up for it, which leads to breakouts and unbalanced skin. The idea that oil dissolves oil is key with the oil cleaning method.  I have done this for about a week and my face is more clear than it has been for months…I am amazed.  I am also amazed at how moisturized my skin is.   Moisturized skin is plump skin, which helps with the appearance of lines. I will be writing a whole post on this after I have used this method a bit longer.
    5. I have been using it as an eye make up remover.  I wrote a post on Homemade Eye Makeup Remover, and talked about a recipe that used olive oil.  Well, I am all about simplifying, and since I am already using coconut oil to wash my face, I also started using it to wipe away eye makeup.  It works beautifully.
    6. I use it as a cuticle oil.  Occasionally, when I have extra on my hands, I will rub it into my cuticles.  No more hangnails!

    7. I use it at a key ingredients in my Homemade Coconut Lime Sugar Scrub.  This is one of my most FAVORITE beauty products.  Love!

    Pretty impressive, huh?  Think of the money I am saving by not buying eye makeup remover, shaving cream, body lotions (lets face it, us women usually have at least 5 different types sitting around!), face moisturizer, cuticle oil & body scrub!  Think of the space I am saving in my home by having one jar of coconut oil instead of 10 bottles of all these products!
    That makes me VERY happy!
    //

    –I buy a large container on Amazon, I love the Nutiva brand.  It is organic and wonderful.  Trader Joes also started carrying coconut oil.  Yay!
    –Coconut oil is very unique.  It is a solid up to I think 76 degrees, then becomes a liquid.  So depending on the temperature of your house, you will either be scooping the oil if solid, or pouring it if liquid.
    –I use coconut oil in recipes, like this one, the Best Recipe I Ever Messed Up.  For beauty purposes, I scoop some out and store in a small 8 oz mason jar.  I love the Elite series glass jars.  They have a nice wide mouth and are a cute shape.  I also keep coconut oil in a small 4oz jar to throw into my gym bag.
