FAMILY/ Leaving A Legacy/ Spiritual

I Am A Scribe and it is Changing My Life

pen and journal

I have found a way of studying the Scriptures that has been changing me in profound ways.  I’m not sure how I stumbled upon it while searching through Amazon, but I did, and I believe God’s own hand led me right to this profound way of studying His words.

I stumbled upon the 17:18 series.  I was intrigued the minute I saw the words “Journible” & “Scribe.”

I know that I am not alone when it comes to learning much more deeply and retaining more knowledge when I write something out– kinesthetically–so the idea that there was a such a simple way to study Scripture that utilized this way of learning really excited me.

The Purpose of Journible –(taken from my book journible I Timothy-Hebrews)
Engagement:The Journible is a profoundly simple attempt to aid a person’s ability to engage the Word of God by slowing down the process of simply reading the test.  The book is organized so that the “scribe” can slowly and thoughtfully engage the text while leaving plenty of room to write comments and question about the text.
Legacy: Journibles provide a legacy to pass on from one generation to the next. The journible creates an opportunity for one generation to communicate in writing to the next generation their insights and personal application of the test.
How To Use:This book is organized so that the scribe (you) will hand write your very own copy of I Timothy-Hebrews. You will be writing the text of the Bible only on the right hand page of the book.  This should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left page of your open text to write your own notes and comments.  From time to time, a question or word will be lightly printed on the left page; these questions are to aide in further study, but should not interfere with your own notes and comments.  This means that you are encouraged to not only write your own “copy” of the Bible, but to also write your own notes concerning the text.

journal 17:18 series

I ordered the specific journal of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus Philemon & Hebrews.  I am just finishing 1 Timothy and can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed this process.  It is simply writing out 3-5 verses a day, and I love it.  My “chemo brain” {grin} is retaining it and I know it is changing me, my heart and my thought processes.

I especially love the “legacy” idea.  You all know as a 2 time cancer survivor I am keenly aware that life on this earth is short and can be cut short at anytime.  What better legacy can I leave then the written Word of God and what it taught my heart as I read it?  Gives me chills to think about what a simple way the 17:18 series has given me to do just that.
writing in a journal

I was not paid to write this, but if you are interested in becoming a scribe and getting your own 17:18 series Journible,  use this link to order and I will receive a small compensation for sharing the link.  Let me know in the comments if you did!  I’m excited to see how many people this appeals to.

I’m Getting New Implants & More Reconstruction – A Health Update

{Taken Yesterday}

a collage of my cancer journey
{My Health Journey In Photos}

Breast Reconstruction is a complicated thing.  Especially when you are small in stature.  Especially when your scars misbehave.  Especially when your name is Amy.

It is completely different than Breast Augmentation, where one is just getting implants.

The difference with reconstruction is that there is no tissue to work with.  Breast tissue is taken during a mastectomy, and what is left is chest muscle and skin.

I have history of having issues with my reconstruction.  If you have been reading this blog and my cancer story awhile, you already know this.  I started out very happy with reconstruction surgery results right after my mastectomy.  But, then things settled and my right implant decided to have some fun and slide down a bit.  I had that fixed August 2011 and all was well–for a short while.

Enter keloids.  A keloid is an over abundance of scaring.  You know the singer Seal?  He has a beautiful face, but also is known for the keloids that have formed on his face.

keloids
     {keloid on someone’s knee.  Before treatment and after treatment pics}

I have history of keloids.  We have figured out that when I am cut twice in the same spot (like my port scar–once to put it in, once to take it out) I form a keloid.

This happened after my plastic surgeon fixed my slipping right implant.  The incision he made was to the right of the implant, toward my armpit area.  About an inch of the cut was an area that was already cut once by the previous surgery, and yep, it formed a keloid.

Keloids are treated by steroid shots.  If left untreated, they will just continue to form scar tissue. Keloids are stubborn, burn, itch and are not pretty or fun.  Speaking of burning, the steroid shots that treat keloids burn like heck, and are not fun either.  It takes a lot of courage to walk into a doctors office knowing you are going to get burned.  Yowza it hurts!

I had the keloid on my right side treated with steroids.  I was hopeful it would help.  I’ve had success with steroid shots in the past with my stomach scar from Melanoma (2 time cancer survivor here!) and with my port scar.

But… no such luck.  Well, maybe too much luck.  It worked so well that it thinned the skin out too much in that area.  Over the last 4 months we have been watching it closely, and it has been no fun.  The skin is so thin to the right of my implant that it looks like someone punched me in the boob.  No joke.  Thin skin = blood vessels show through, and it looks permanently black and blue and just simply yuck.  It has started giving me pain when I sleep on my side.  Doc looked at it and said “if that breaks open we will have a mess on our hands. Time to get it fixed.” Yes…time for more surgery.

Is this too long and detailed for you yet?  There is more.  Much more.  If you are not a details person feel free to stop reading here, and just know that surgery is October 24.

One positive about new implants is that there is a new type of implant that the FDA just approved in the state of Nebraska.  It is called Highly Cohesive Breast Implants, but in breast cancer reconstruction world we like to call them “gummy bear” implants.

gummy bear sitting on top of a breast implant

Before there were only 2 types of implants to choose from:
~Saline =liquid.
~Silicone = gel (this is what I currently have)

And now, there are  Highly Cohesive Breast Implant.  They are still silicone but when you cut through them it remains a solid, like cutting through a gummy bear.

natrelle 410 breast implant

I will specifically be havingpage3image2464 Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled Breast Implants.

Pros for gummys:
~The results are beautiful and more natural shaped…like a teardrop type shape compared to just round.
~They are slightly textured on the outside which helps keep them in place, and we all know I want that..no more slipping!
~They won’t leak like saline and silicone tend to do.
~They have been really well received specifically by breast cancer survivors.
~They don’t ripple like saline and silicone do, especially important when working with the thin skin and no tissue of breast cancer survivors.
~They feel very natural.

breast implant
Highly Cohesive Vs Regular Silicone

Cons:
You are limited in size depending on how wide you measure from armpit to armpit.

I only measure 10 1/2 inches across from armpit to armpit, so my visions of a bit more cleavage was not going to happen…or so I thought.

I have visited my Plastic Surgeon a few times talking out my complicated case.

Here is what makes me a very hard case:

~I keloid

~I have no breast tissue to work with.

~I am very small, no fat in the area.

~I tend to form ripples due to how little fat I have in the area.

~To the sides of my implants toward the armpits there is almost a hollow area, it literally is skin and bone.  I can feel and see my ribs right there.  A typical round implant does not fill that area in at all.

~Above my implants I have tissue.  You actually grow breast tissue all the way up to your collar bone.  They cut out my breast tissue up to a certain point, and again, since I have no fat it is obvious where they stopped cutting and where the tissue starts.  Once my implants settled, it looks like collar bone, then tissue, then no tissue then round implant.  Not natural.

These issues caused my Dr. to stare at me from across his big desk and look deep in thought.  It was  almost a humorous moment.  There were headless photos of my naked chest spread out all over said desk, taken in 3-4 month increments over the past 3 years, and he is just tapping his pen with an occasional “hmm” deep in thought. I did not like looking at the photos.  I especially did not like how great the reconstruction looked 3 years ago, before I had a runaway implant and before keloids.  It was either a laugh or cry moment.  I tried to laugh, but my heart was crying and I tried not to look down at those photos on his desk.  He finally told me his plan.

He would  go in, cut out the thinned skin, add some Alloderm (cadaver tissue that has all the dna removed from it–blech) under the skin in my cleavage area to address rippling.  He would take fat from my belly (free lipo baby!) and fill in the “dented” area to the side of my implants by my armpits where you can see my ribs.  He felt the new tear drop shape of the new implants would take care of and fill the area above the implants where tissue meets no tissue.

He told me my implants would be the same size I have now or maybe smaller.

Smaller?! That made me sad.

If I’m going to go through another surgery I was at least hoping for a bit more cleavage and va-va-voom!

So you would think the story stops here…it doesn’t.

I saw Dr. on a Friday.  I was called by him personally on Monday morning.

“Amy, I’ve been thinking about you and your implants all weekend.”
(a sentence you would only want to hear from your doctor or maybe husband)

He had come up with a whole new plan.

Here it is:

~2 surgeries instead of one. One for expanders. Second to replace expanders with implants.

~Adding expanders –Why? He is worried that after getting rid of the area where the skin thinned out so much, he would not have enough left to do a satisfactory surgery. It gives him much more control as a surgeon to do his art and gives me a bit of control in figuring out what size I would want.

~by using expanders, we can fit a larger implant in, which should fill in both the upper rib area by my armpits where I am skin and bone AND where non-tissue meets tissue above my implants.  No free lipo with this plan, but also no new scars in stomach area which could keloid.

~by using expanders we can fit a larger implant.  That was worth saying twice. {grin} We will still be using the Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled Breast Implants.

What this means:
~surgery October 24 to add expanders. (would you believe I scheduled surgery around our yearly trip to the pumpkin patch?  We go the 19th, and I don’t want to miss out!)
~trips to Omaha (one hour drive) weekly to get expanders expanded.
~being slightly entertained by seeing my breasts grow every week
~4-6 weeks of expansion, depending on how quickly I expand and how big we want to go.

How I feel:
~relieved to have a plan Dr. feels good about
~taken care of by him as he thought about me and came up with the best plan
~apprehensive about 2 surgeries.
~apprehensive about the experience of expanders.  I remember a fellow survivor explaining that they are hard as a tortoise shell and uncomfortable.  The minute you get comfortable, it is time for more expansion.
~hopeful to have a good, va-va-voom outcome
~tough because I know I can handle it all
~scared because I have not had to go through surgery in so long.  I feel out of practice!  Bravery seems to come easier when I’m in survival mode.  Not that I want to be in survival mode!

If you are still reading you deserve a medal.  Truly.
Thank you for caring about me and my…ehem..breasts.

Supplements – What I Buy & Why

Box of Shaklee Vitalizer

Vita-Strip & box of Vitalizer

I have spent incredible amounts of time reading up on health, and a reoccurring theme I have found that I cannot ignore is the importance of our bodies getting the vitamins and minerals that we need.  I am also struck with how God provided so many ways nutritionally that we can help our health, especially our immune system.

I have agonized over the decision of what supplements to take.  Sounds dramatic, but really, it is true. I have looked into all types of brands. I have tried not to get too wrapped up in perfection, but I also want to be wise in what I buy and take.  I want to have the best life and health that I can possible have, and making a decisions when it comes to supplements is a large part of living my best life and staying as healthy as possible.

Enter Shaklee.

I took Shaklee when I was in active treatment for cancer…so about 2 years.  I loved it.  LOVE, loved it!  I have missed it dearly!  I stopped taking it after radiation and started taking mish- mash of cheaper vitamins thinking it would help with our budget, but I was always questioning whether or not I am getting everything I need, and never really knew if the quality of the vitamins I was taking was ok or not.

I reassured myself that I have a very healthy diet, and that most of my nutritional needs are met with that.  But, truth be told, our food is not what it used to be nutritionally, thanks to a depleted soil, and I still wanted the reassurance of a good multi-vitamin to know I am covering all bases.  Not only did I want that, but also a good probiotic, a good omega 3 source & most importantly for me being a plant eater–vitamin B-12.

I started getting overwhelmed with all the different bottles of vitamins and supplements I was buying, and really started wondering if I am saving any money going a “cheaper” route, especially knowing most cheap vitamins are full of fillers.

I missed the confidence and ease I had in my supplements when I was taking Shaklee, and decided it was time to go back to them.  It was worth the peace of mind, and it was a good time in my pursuit of health to do just that.

I cannot tell you the excitement I felt when I got my box of supplements in the mail.  It is quite ridiculous really–to be this excited about vitamins…but I am!!

Here is why:

Enter Vitalizer!

Box of Vitalizer & Vita-Strips

What is Vitalizer?
It is everything I need and was looking for in a handy-dandy little daily Vita-strip!

No more opening a bazillion bottles of vitamins.  No more wondering if I am getting all I need.  In my pursuit of a simple, healthy life, Vitalizer is the perfect product for me.

Box full of Vitalizer Strips
Is it inexpensive?  No.

Is it worth it to me?  Yes.

It contains over 80 nutrients–a multivitamin, calcium, ultra-pure fish oil, and probiotics–plus extra B vitamins, vitamin C, D, & E, and more.

Although a 30 day supply of Vitalizer strips is expensive, when you add up separate bottles of what is listed above, that would be at least 7-10 different bottles of supplements.  The average price of a decent supplement is $10-$12 bucks, and supplements such as CO-Q10 can go as high as $25.00, so when I looked at it that way, I felt better about the price of Vitalizer, because it is anything but average!

Vita-Strips by Shaklee

Here is what caught my eye and made me say YES to Shaklee Vitalizer:

Healthy aging–with N-acetylcysteine, more vitamin B12 & Vitamins C & D

Heart health–with CoQ 10, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin E

Bone & joint health–high in calcium and vitamins D, C, and K

Healthy vision–with lutein and vitamin A

Digestive health–with probiotics

Physical energy–with all eight essential B vitamins.

PLUS triple berry blend–77x more polyphenols, ounce for ounce, than juice

Changing Brands Can Change Your Life...
and I”m banking on that.  I believe Shaklee, as they have been around for 56 years, have been thoroughly tested,  and their product kept me strong during cancer treatment.  My Oncologist was consistently impressed with how well I did through treatment and often asked what I was doing on my own to keep my health up.

“Shaklee Vitalizer is based on 12 clinical studies, as well as the first-ever study done on long-term Shaklee supplement users.  Results from this groundbreaking study, published in Nutrition Journal, showed that people who too Shaklee supplements had markedly better health that non supplement users.”

Shaklee Micronutrient Advanced Release Technology–S.M.A.R.T.
Lastly, one of my most favorite things about Shaklee Vitalizer is how it delivers the Right Nutrients to the Right Place at the Right Time.  This was a huge selling point for me, as I have read way too often about how vitamins are a waste of money if they don’t get to where they need to go in a timely manner, or if they are not absorbed when and where they need to be in the body. I will let the image speak for itself and show you what S.M.A.R.T. means, or if you want more of a visual click on the video.

Shaklees S.M.A.R.T Delivery System
Shaklee’s delivery system improves absorption of key nutrients.  This is unique to Shaklee and is protected by 12 patents.

So this brings me to you.

Do you take supplements?
Do you wonder if you should or if they are making a difference if you are?
Do you want to join me in taking Shaklee Vitalizer Vita-Strips?

Right now, if you purchase a box (30 day supply) of Vitalizer, you will get a free membership into Shaklee which is a $19.95 value.

Not Afraid Of Things To Come

Proverbs 31:25

Five Minute Friday… five minutes of unedited, non stop writing on this week’s given theme ‘She’

Start

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. Proverbs 31:25

hardships have helped create her strength
she has learned to do all things through Him

she holds her head up in dignity
for He has been faithful in lifting it

her heart is fixed
a quiet trust

she has a righteous purpose
and lives her days slow and deliberate

she is equipped

armed against cares and worries

not giving into fear
not afraid of things to come

she smiles in confidence
rejoices in all things

laughs at death
departs in peace

I am she

Homemade Hair Reconstructor

Homemade Hair Reconstructor

I have seen a lot of ideas for homemade hair reconstructors and conditioners, but other than using Coconut Oil as my favorite hair moisturizer, I have never used home products to make homemade hair reconstructor…until now!

Thanks again to Pinterest, I couldn’t pass up the idea of making my own hair reconstructor.

Hair Reconstructor Before and After

The treatment made my natural curls more bouncy & took away frizz

Hair Reconstructor Vs. Hair Moisturizer

A hair reconstructor is different than a hair moisturizer.  A moisturizer adds moisture back into the hair.  It is great for dry hair.  A reconstructor is like a strengthener.  It helps heal damaged, weak hair.

There are several things that make hair need moisturizing treatments and reconstructing treatments.  Some hair is just naturally dry and weak, but most of the damage is from:

  • highlighting and coloring hair
  • not getting regular trims
  • outside elements like wind and sun
  • heat damage from hair dryers and curling/flattening irons
  • certain medications

My hair had damage from all of the above!

12 Must- See Homemade Remedies To Save Your Health And Your Budget

So its been all over the news that they are finding parabens in the breast cancer survivors breast tissue.  My ears perked up with this because I have been in the beauty business for years as a cosmetologist, and parabans seem to be in EVERY beauty product.  I have also met way too many young hairstylists that also battled breast cancer, and it has made us all say “hmm.”

Parabens are a group of compounds widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, including underarm deodorants. Parabens are absorbed through intact skin and from the gastrointestinal tract and blood.
Measurable concentrations of six different parabens have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors (Darbre, 2004). The particular parabens were found in relative concentrations that closely parallel their use in the synthesis of cosmetic products (Rastogi, 1995). Parabens have also been found in almost all urine samples examined from a demographically diverse sample of U.S. adults (Ye, 2006a).
Parabens are estrogen mimickers, with the potency of the agonistic response being related to the chemical structure (Darbre, 2008). They can bind to the cellular estrogen receptor (Routledge, 1998). They also increase the expression of many genes that are usually regulated by estradiol and cause human breast tumor cells (MCF-7 cells) to grow and proliferate in vitro (Byford, 2002; Pugazhendhi, 2007). Nevertheless, parabens as a class do not fully mimic estradiol in the changes in cellular gene expression nor are the effects of all parabens identical (Sadler, 2009).
Parabens are estrogen mimickers.”  This really made me pause, as my cancer and the majority of breast cancers are fed by hormones.  I had symptoms of estrogen dominance for years and I often wonder if this contributed to my diagnosis.
As I have been trying to avoid parabens, I have been on a kick of making my own beauty products, and in my quest to avoid chemicals, I have also been back on track of making some of my own cleaners. There are some wonderful healthy products out there, but they usually end up costing an arm and a leg, so have been quite motivated to make my own.
My inspiration comes hugely from my Pinterest Boards.
Here are a few that have caught my eye on
    {wanna follow me there? Click here.}

    6 DIY Homemade product ideas

    1. Anti-Eczema Lotion Bars.
My youngest deals with a few patches of eczema every once in awhile.  I like to have something on hand, and I usually buy it from our local health food store.  I compared the ingredients in these bars to the product we use and love and they are super similar.  Makes me happy as the one we buy is not cheap!

    2.  Peppermint Oil Insect Repellent
It is natural, smells good, and is green, too!
    3. Coconut Scalp Treatment Oil
This post is by Destri at The Mother Huddle, whom I love.  She, too, is a licensed cosmetologist and knows what she is talking about when it comes to the scalp and hair.
    4. Instant Olive Oil Sugar Hand Scrub
This one is also from The Mother Huddle.  Love that I can grab 2 ingredients in my kitchen and have soft hands within minutes.
    5.  Natural Wood Polish
Equal parts olive oil and vinegar!  So easy.  So cheap!
    6.  Homemade Air Freshener–those store bought sprays are full of chemicals and can trigger allergies, not to mention the propellent in aerosol sprays!

6-12 homemade cleaning products, cough syrup, gunk remover
    7.  DIY Super 40 Load Dryer Softener Sheet
Take your favorite liquid fabric softener and soak an old hand towel or flour cloth completely with it. Wring it out and let it dry completely, then throw it in with your next load. This mega-fabric softener sheet should be good for at least 40 loads of laundry WHAT A GREAT IDEA!! (If you want to be super green, I have heard that vinegar in the rinse cycle is great for making clothes soft.)

    8.  DIY Organic Dry Shampoo
This intrigues me.  The link has great directions on how to make it, just not how to use it.  If I make it, I will let you know what I figure out.
