My First Giveaway

Tuesday, I announced my first Giveaway here at New Nostalgia.  I will be combining the comment entries from Tuesday’s post with any comment entries left on this post for the final drawing on May 24.

I am very pleased to be able to give away “Simplify” ~ an ebook by Joshua Becker.
Do You Know What A Minimalist Is?  Well, here is your chance to meet one!
From “Simplify”
“Since choosing to simplify his life two years ago, Joshua has encouraged hundreds of thousand of others around the world to pursue minimalism in their life through his blog: www.becomingminimalist.com.  As one of today’s leading proponents of “rational minimalism,” joshua presents 7 principles that will help guide the reader into a practice of simplicity that works for their unique, individual lifestyle.  You will enjoy his unique blend of illustrative stories, theoretical principle, and practical application.  After all, if this typical family of four living in the suburbs can simplify their life, so can you!”

I absolutely loved reading this ebook!  It was an easy read full of many practical tips on how to live life more simply. I jive with his idea of “rational minimalism,” which for me, gives permission to pursue minimalism, even though I am wired to love beauty, creativity and warmth in my home.  Minimalism was something that was appealing to me, yet the typical thoughts of a stark and empty home freaked me out a bit! Joshua’s idea of “rational minimalism” struck a cord with me, it allows for one to have their own style of minimalism, which just makes sense– especially when one has a family with kids!  Yes, more people means more stuff, but as I learned in the book, it is possible and so rewarding to be intentional in the things you decide to keep or to buy. As Joshua says in the book minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value, and the removal of anything that distracts us from it.” Love that.

So on to the giveaway!

What I Buy and Why-Bread

I always find it fascinating to peek into other peoples grocery carts, while waiting in line at the grocery store, to see what they are buying.  So often I have wanted to strike up a conversation and ask about a product I see, and ask why they like it and why they choose it over another.  I get the same feeling when I open up other people’s refrigerators, I love seeing what brands of foods they buy, and often get inspired to try something new.

I have learned so much about food by asking my friends what they buy, where they buy it, and why they like it.  These conversations inspired me to start writing some posts on the food items I buy and why.  Not only do I want to share with you what is working for us, but my hope is, that in the comments section, I will get to hear from you and what is working for you!

Bread
Our Everyday, Whole Wheat Bread (either of the 2 below:)
If I Want To Treat My Kids To “White” Bread:
When I Want To Splurge:
*Disclaimer-I was not paid or compensated in anyway to promote these products.
It is important to me that our bread does not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup. (Read why here and here)  I also think fiber is very important, so I try not to buy bread that contains less then 3 grams/slice.  The “Oatnut” bread is what my girls call “the yummy white bread.”  It is really good, but I do not buy it as often because it has less fiber in it and uses enriched flour (although unbleached:)) where as the 100% whole wheat breads uses whole wheat flour, which does not have to be enriched, because nothing was ever removed in the first place.  I like that!
You can go here to read more of my thoughts on making grains count.
What brands of bread work for you?  Have you switched to 100% whole wheat bread?  If so, was it hard on your kids?

Just A Quick Hi!

Its been a full but fun day. No time to put together a decent post, (I’m lucky enough to have a handsome man wanting to spend time with ME!) but thought I would say a quick hi!

I am sitting here on a sugar high thanks to Barnes and Nobels’ “Lemon Baby Bundt Cake”…oooohhh baby, it is goooood!  That + Vanilla Frapp= me feeling buzzy and a bit sick…but a good sick:)  While I was there, a super fun thing happened.  I met a reader!  My friend Jami was there with a friend and introduced us, and come to find out she is someone who reads and has commented on this lil’ blog of mine.  How fun!  (Hi Amy, so nice to meet you in person!)  Great name, huh?

Other randomness on my brain:

~I’m worried about my garden.  The wind was CRAZY today.  I think my little carrot tops might have been blow to death.  I covered them as best as I could…we’ll see how they are in the morning.

~I spent some time with my sister tonight.  Love her.  I gave her this rockin’ haircut, (it’s asymmetric, wish you could see the other side, but  I didn’t know how public she would want her face, so I gave you half her face:), and my lil’ one was cuddled up on the other side of her face, whose face I don’t want public..confused yet?) then we went shoe shopping.  I was talking to her about this blog tonight, and she doesn’t read it very often. (whatever…j/k) We laugh because our lives are so different.  Here is my interpretation of our differences…She is young, cool, has a great job and a busy social life…no kids.  I am old, getting a bit dweeby, and I’m into gardening, homemaking, cooking, crafting…and have kids everywhere I look.  I totally see why she doesn’t read it that often, but I have to give her a hard time about it.  In fact, tomorrow (and the next day, and the next, and the next) she will wake up to a blog post from me, sitting in her email inbox, because right after I publish this, I am going on over to my sidebar and entering her email address into the little box that says “subscribe via email.”  Bwaahaa, now she’ll have to read it…I love sisters!!

~I am so spring cleaned out!  I have only done my sunroom, living room, dining room and I am 1/2 way through with the kitchen.  Blech.  Tomorrow, my mother- in- law, Sharon, is taking me out to breakfast, then coming back here to tackle the rest of the kitchen with me:)  How awesome is that??

~I am determined to make May Day baskets this year.  I have a plan, and I hope they turn out as cute as they look in my head!!

~Teacher appreciation day is coming up.  I wanna do a lil’ something.  Hmm…what to do?

~I’ve been thinking about different little fears I have hanging around lately.  Why do I let them?  Love this verse– 2 Timothy 1:7 “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of love, and of power and of a sound mind”  Amen!

~Back to that husband of mine, who is waiting so patiently.  He has been working on a whole behavior/reward/allowance system that we will be trying out on our kids starting May 1st.  It is very exciting.  If it works well (most things do that come from his strategic mind) I will blog about it!

Goodnight, blessings to you all!

Ultimate Blog Party

Ultimate Blog Party 2010
If you are visiting from the exciting Ultimate Blog Party, let me WELCOME you!  I hope you enjoy a quick visit here at New Nostalgia.  I would love for you to continue with me, as I try to do life simply and well, with a mission to get back to the basics. (for my regular readers, warm {hugs} to you, too!)
{me and my DH}
Here are a few posts that will give you a peek into my world:
Recipes-I try hard to use ingredients that have been around awhile, before processed “food” came about.  Simple and healthful is my goal.
Beauty-I am a hairstylist turned full time homemaker, so the creative in me loves to find beauty in everything.  I like to explore beauty, without spending a fortune doing it.
Family-oh, to have this one figured out.  I love being a mom.  I do my best, but have much to learn!  My prayer is that I will never stop growing as I explore this thing called motherhood.  I post as I go, sharing the things I discover that help me in this amazing job called “mom.”
{Fall Break Fun} (could be spring break, too:))
Crafts-again, I love to create, and so do my 3 girls (age 10, 9 & 6). Here are some of the things we have done together.
Homemaking-a job I take very seriously.  We have such power as moms to create an environment to (as my joy post said) hurt or heal.  I desire home to be a place where my family can come and be fully who they are, and to heal from what life brings. This, to me, makes home environment so important!
Spirituality-it is THE thread that holds all of who I am together, it affects all that I do, because He is.
Thanks again for visiting and reading!
Please come back,  and know that you are invited to participate in my
“Anti-Procrastination Tuesdays” Link Party. It is a place where you and I can get things done together!
I would love to have you link up or leave a comment!
If you would like to receive new posts from New Nostalgia in your inbox, or if you would like to subscribe to New Nostalgia, there is a link for both in my sidebar.  For more information on subscribing, read this post.

Random Thoughts On My Brain

I’ve been in a bit of a quiet, sleepy funk today. I’m super tired from staying up on this computer until one in the morning.  I’ve got stuff on the brain, but nothing deep, just random.  Thought I’d share…lucky you, huh?

1. Gardening For Dummies
I am hoping I can find this book at our local library-I’m gonna need it!  I reserved a plot at a community garden site, and after spending some time at Barnes and Noble tonight, reading a pile of gardening magazines, I’ve concluded that I need to go straight to the dummies book!

2. Asthma

My daughters asthma is flaring up again.  I have not had to deal with it for over a year, since we have changed our eating habits.  Her allergy to corn syrup is a trigger, and it seems to be getting worse as she is now sensitive to all corn products.  She took a bite of a corn tortilla chip and immediatley reacted to it this week, which is new for her.  Her asthma is a bit unusual.  She has the instant reaction of a horrid, barky cough, it almost sounds like her throat is closing up. (scary, I know.. time for an epi-pen?) If her coughing spasms get bad enough, it turns into wheezing.  In the past, we would just take away the offending food (corn syrup) and it would go away.  Lately,  its been hanging on all throughout the day.  I am not sure if her corn allergy is getting worse, which means I need to be more careful about what she eats, or her spring seasonal allergies are kickin’ in and the two combined are a bit much for her immune system, and are kickin’ her!  She couldn’t catch her breath last night after playing at the park, so I had to give in and give her a puff from her inhaler, which I have not had to do in a year!  I’m buummin’ a bit about that!!  I’m going to get her tested for allergies ASAP.  Hopefully, it is just a seasonal thing. If not, the idea of eliminating ALL corn products is a bit daunting and makes me want to cry a little.  I just read that it is the hardest allergen to eliminate over wheat, eggs, and dairy, because it is in EVERYTHING!  {sigh}

3. Moldy Lunchbox
This is what happens when daughter leaves her lunchbox at school over spring break week.   Gross, huh?  It had a half eaten orange in it.  I was going to make her clean it out because she has been SO forgetful of her lunch bag the last few weeks, so I thought that would be great motivation to start remembering!  I forgot to enforce it before she went to bed, ( I was busy at Barnes and Nobel feeling like a gardening dummy) so now I’m gonna have to clean it.  I can’t bear to let it sit in my kitchen like that overnight…it would give me bad dreams, and we all know I need a good sleep tonight so you will be spared another random, sleepy-brained, rambling post tomorrow!

4. Ripe Bananas
Here is something positive-I’m having a new love affair with ripe bananas.  My local grocery store is selling big bags of them for just over a buck, which I think is just lovely!  I freeze them, and use them in green smoothies, homemade popsicles, and banana bread.  Makes me happy.  Woot!

5. Laundry
I am in shock that I am actually keeping up with laundry since starting “AP Tuesdays” a month ago.  If you only knew what a struggle this has been all my married life, you would be so proud!  I am a bit disappointed in myself today, instead of folding 2 loads right out of the dryer, I piled them on my folding table (I was tired!) and they are still sitting there. Oh well, progress–not perfection, right?

6. French Coffee Press

My oldest daughter is a gift giver.  Like, it- is- just- in- her- and- she- can’t- not- not- do- it– gift giver.  It is truly a beautiful “gift”, one she says she “gets from her Grandpa Don.”  Aw.
Recently she had been given a gift card to Target, so when I took her to spend it, she picked a couple little things out for herself and then became very consumed with buying me a gift.  I mean, CONSUMED.  I tried to talk her out of it numerous times and told her to spend it on herself, but she just begged me.  How sweet is that?  She said, “mom, what is something you have been wanting for a very long time?”  We just happened to be in the kitchen appliance area, and there they were, Bodium  French Coffee Presses.  I’VE BEEN WANTING ONE FOR A VERY LONG TIME!  I gave in to my punkin’ and made a deal with her.  I told her I would let her buy me a gift if she would let me pay half.  She beamed like she had just won the lottery.  How precious is that??  Now, I get to make this iced coffee recipe I found at Small Notebook that I have been dying to try.  Yippee!

7. Small Notebook
Sigh.  Another love affair of mine.  I really, really love this blog.  Everything she does, makes me say “I wanna do that, too!”  Like making my own bars of soap or making homemade yogurt.  I’m gonna do both in the next few weeks, so I can be more like her  continue on this journey of making more things homemade. Don’t worry, I’m not at the stalker stage….yet.

Oh boy, its time to stop.  I feel so much better getting that all off my brain, so if you are still reading, THANK YOU!  G’night!

A Busy Spring Break

It feels like FOREVER since I last posted!  The kids were home on spring break, and we were gone all weekend at a conference, so I have not had time to get on this computer!  I do not realize how much I love to write until I don’t have the time to.

I hope you all have had a great week!  Mine went well.  There was a morning this week when the kids were all home, that I would love to have the chance to “redo,” but I’m thankful for forgiveness and truly enjoyed time with them this week.  We kept busy with dentist appointments (thanks, Luke!), visits with family, celebrating my baby turning 7 with a “Paint Yourself Silly” party, and even had a couple days warm enough to go to the park!

This weekend, my husband and I had the opportunity (thanks to his job) to go to “A Weekend To Remember” conference.  Have any of you been to one?  It is a Christian marriage conference that consists of wonderful speakers, a date night with your spouse, and the opportunity to write/receive a love letter to/from your spouse.  So much fun!  We really enjoyed the time together, and felt like it was a great “refresher” for our marriage.  We are 13 years into this thing called marriage, so it was great to be able to look over the years and see such growth (only by God’s great grace!) It gave us reassurance that we are on the right path, and reaffirmed our priorities.  Todd is truly God’s perfect gift to me! I’m pretty excited about some of the things that were talked about, so there probably will be some posts on marriage coming up!

A Soldier’s Homecoming

I’m off to a very busy, spring break day with my girls!

I don’t have time to post, but wanted to share these awesome photos with you.  They are of a soldier, coming home to his wife and darling 5 month old girl, one whom he has never met!  I loved looking at them, they made me misty eyed!  They are at a photography website called Flourish Studio.  Enjoy!
{I found them via Kirtsy}
