Hi Everyone! Welcome to AP Tuesday!

I bragged last week about how much I got done, then got home today and realized I REALLY PROCRASTINATED, forgetting to get this post ready, and now I have to rush through it, and feature less of you. 🙁
I DO have a pretty good excuse (gotta pull the cancer excuse card out while I still have it-ha!).

I had MY VERY LAST CHEMO TREATMENT today!  I am so very excited about that.  Now on to surgery!  Target surgery date is the week after Christmas.  I will be having some scans done mid-December to see where we are at.  I pray (and ask for your prayers) that cancer has not spread anywhere else, that my swollen lymph node is negative, and that the tumor is now just scar tissue as doctor thought that could be possible.  Can you believe that?  A 6 centimeter tumor taken care of by just 4 chemo sessions down to scar tissue?  We will not know for sure what is really going on inside until surgery, but I am very thankful for chemo drugs!  It is funny saying that as I was very scared of pumping my body with chemicals after pursuing a more natural life style, but I am a big believer in balance, especially now!
All that to say I am feeling a bit sleepy and need to get this posted in a hurry so I can go lay down!  Thank you all so much for linking up, I can’t wait to read your links as I rest this week!!

Hi Everyone! Welcome to AP Tuesday!
Get ready…I’m gonna brag.
I GOT SO MUCH DONE THIS LAST WEEK!
I felt pretty good physically, and got bitten by a major organization bug.  You should see our trash pile outside waiting for the trash man–it is insanely huge but makes me smile!  I think the holidays, my upcoming mastectomy, and the unknowns that cancer brings that is motivating me.  I never know when my health could take an unexpected turn, as I have learned from reading other peoples journey with breast cancer.  There are so many ups and downs on the road to recovery, so when I am feeling good I want to get stuff done!

Christmas is on my mind, I am finished Christmas shopping, except for a few more gifts for our girls, which can be ordered from Amazon.  I have half of the gifts wrapped.  I just couldn’t bear to think that my husband would get stuck with it all if I ended up getting too sick, so I got busy! Told ya I’ve been on a roll!!:)

I wish I would have taken more pics for you all, as I cleaned out a major closet and an area in my basement that would have had great before and afters!  I’ve been tackling drawers and file cabinets.  This house has never been more organized!

Now, I must tell you, I have only been able to do all this because:
1. I am home A LOT!
2. I have meals being made for me and delivered by people at my church-this frees up energy and time.
3. I have a cleaning lady coming once a week, which is another thing that frees up time and energy.
If I had to cook and do the deep cleaning, I would never be able to do all I have done!

Ok, on to YOU!

This idea is great and I plan on using it in many different ways.  She took tissue paper, and using a heat gun, warmed up the wax until the tissue stuck.  I have a local specialty store that has some of the most beautiful printed tissue paper, sold by the sheet.  Think of the custom candles I could make!  Now to find a heat gun to borrow…

Candy Cane Lane Green Tea

When something makes me this happy, I just have to share it with you!

I am coming down with a cold, my throat is very sore and I’ve got a stuffy nose.  Crap.

I picked up Celestial Seasonings Candy Cane Lane Green Tea at my health food store the other day and boy, am I glad I did.  It is REALLY good.  It has the taste of peppermint sticks, creamy vanilla bean and a hint of cinnamon.  I added a packet of stevia and a splash of milk to make it sweet, white and creamy.
This makes it feel like I am drinking an expensive, hot drink that is full of calories, when really, I am drinking something full of antioxidants, and all kinds of things that are good for me, and it is sugar free!  There is just something about peppermint when one has a stuffy nose!  Ahhh…

I just bought a bunch of red and white, candy cane striped coffee mugs at my local Dollar Tree. They are square and really cute. I am planning on using them in some way as Christmas gifts for teachers.  They would be perfect stuffed with these tea bags, (they smell SO good), and a candy cane, then wrapped with cellophane and tied with a red bow.  Great, simple gift for any tea lover’s out there!

If you go to Celestial Seasonings Website, you can type in your zip code and they will tell you where to find this particular tea in your area, or, you can click here and order it from Amazon.

Kids After-School, Afternoon Routine

Some of my most popular post are the ones I wrote on my kids Back To School Morning Routines and Evening Routines, so I thought I would share with you our After School, Afternoon Routine.

Routines and charts really do keep this family running smoothly, but lately I was noticing some bumps within the smooth.

For example:
~The girls water bottles were not filled, in the refrigerator, to easily grab when packing lunches
~Piano was not getting practiced on a daily basis
~Lunch bags were not hung up where they should be
~School papers were not getting signed
~a healthy snack turned into “mom, can I have some Halloween candy”

I started getting frustrated, then realized…I had let AFTERNOON ROUTINE slide!!  Duh.

I think my energy level in the afternoon had much to do with it, especially on chemo weeks.  I was often laying down when they walked in from school.  We didn’t have it laminated like the other Routine charts, so somehow it made it less official, so they would still earn their “rocks” because the chart was not up or ready to be checked off.
Now that we are getting back on track, there will be no tv, computer, video games or play until Afternoon Routine is done!

I also noticed our “3 chores a day” was not happening, either, which is part of the Afternoon Routine, which meant:
~the shoe basket would overflow
~the stair basket would overflow
~laundry was not getting put away by anyone but me
~I was starting to get frustrated and naggy!

It really amazes me how much our routines keep us on track and makes our family life so much easier!

Examples:
~I am no longer a mom who follows the kids around picking up after them or naggin them to pick up after themselves, thanks to “pick up personals” on their Morning and Evening Routines.
~our home really keeps itself picked up, and looks company ready most of the time, because of “pick up personals” and the small things I do to keep it picked up.
~it is never more than “15 minutes of picking up” messy
~I know my girls get their vitamins every morning
~The girls are usually completely ready for school when I come downstairs in the morning.  The only thing left for me is help with their hair and pack their lunches.

Shoes In Basketwe have a basket in our sunroom where they put their shoes when they take them off before coming into the house

Backpack Emptied, Papers On Tablethis keeps me from missing out on work they have accomplished and also work that they need signed, teachers notes, etc.

Backpack Hung Upthey all 3 have designated areas where they keep their backpack hung up

Lunch Bag Emptiedit is a pet peeve of mine when packing lunches in the morning, to open one up and find a nasty banana peel or baggies of sandwich crust, yuck!

Lunch Bag Hung Upanother pet peeve of mine is when packing lunches, their lunch bags are not hanging on the hook in the pantry where they belong

Water Bottle Filled & Put In Refrigeratorthis keeps us from using 10 billion cups.  It also keeps me from having to respond to “mom, I’m thirsty.”  The best perk of this one is my kids are water drinkers.  They do not get juice often, and really do not want it, because their water is always cold and ready for them to grab.

Snacksometimes I have their snack waiting for them at the table when they come home.  If not, we have a snack bin in the pantry, they know they have to eat a healthy snack before they can ask for any type of sugar snack

Snack Cleaned Uppaper towel in trash, crumbs wiped up, chair pushed in.  I did not like finding crumbs and snack mess when I would go to set the table for dinner, so on the chart this went.

3 Chores A DayI am in the process of making a Master Chore List to draw from when writing their 3 chores on the white board each day.  Usually this is easy, I know what needs done that day, and I just write it on the board before they come home from school.  I find when I skip a day or two because the house is in good shape, that they get out of the habit and then complain when they have to do chores again.  Because of this, I will have chores everyday, even if I have to refer to my Master Chore List to come up with them!!

Practice Pianough, this one MUST go on a routine list.  I hate it when Saturday piano lessons comes and I know they have not practiced as often as they should!

Homeworkthis one is tough.  I don’t like making them do it right when they get home, but I also dislike it when we have activities in the evening homework is not done, and all the sudden it is bedtime!  I like doing it right after dinner, but that does not work on busy evenings.  My oldest LOVES doing her homework right before bed.  I really don’t have this one figured out, and I’m not sure if it should go on Afternoon Routine or Evening Routine.  What do you do with homework?  I’d love to know what works for everyone else!!

***I use this site to make our charts.  I choose the “no image” option to keep things clean and simple.

Garden Markers

Guest Post by Erin at A Bird And A Bean
One of the items I made to sell at the upcoming craft fair are these fun garden markers. I’ve seen them on etsy and wanted my very own. So, I’ve been picking up old vintage, antique silverware at yard sales all summer. Then, I went to the hardware store and bought a set 1/8 inch of alphabet stamps. Got out the trusty hammer and stamped away. You’ve got to have a very hard surface under the spoons…..like the rock in my picture. It’s pretty easy…..the hardest part is finding silver-plated silverware at yard sales. The stainless steel kind is too hard to stamp. Well, it’s too hard for me to stamp. It is possible – I watched my dad do it easily. You have to do the stainless in one strong blow (which is hard for since I am a clutz – I tried and smashed a finger). The silver & silver-plated are forgiving and you can hit it more softly and just hit it a few times – way easier.

I just think these are so clever and would make a nice gift for pretty much anyone. They don’t even have to be a gardener to like it. As long as they have a plant it would be cute. They can say anything….”live, laugh, love” “you are my sunshine” “i love you” …the possibilities are endless. Cute gift for a co-worker, teacher, stocking stuffer, or even tie it on a bigger gift as the tag. I’ve seen pictures of them being used as table markers for parties, or you can make one for everyone at the party and use it as place cards. I even saw one hammered totally flat and it was used as a cookbook marker. It said something about food on it. I can’t remember exactly….but anything would work. I hope you try this fun idea. Let me know if you do….I love seeing pics.

Ten Minimalist Choices I’m Making Right Now

~ This is a guest post from Robyn Devine of The Minimalist Knitter

I find myself overwhelmed incredibly easily lately – I think I’ve got it all under control and then I look around and the laundry has piled up, dishes are dirty in the dishwasher and cascading out of the sink, the cats have no food in their bowl, and I’ve got 30 minutes to get to a football game!
I’m learning to step back and make simple, minimalist choices in these moments, and it’s been helping a ton. I’ve shared a few of these choices in the past on my blog, but I thought I’d work up a few special ones for you today!

1. I’m not knitting holiday presents this year, with a few exceptions. In years past I’ve made it my mission to gift everyone I knew with something handmade, and while some people love that, most of the people on my list really didn’t recognize the time it took and the effort and love put into their gifts. So this year I’m knitting approximately five presents, and everyone else will get store-bought. Stress levels instantly reduced!

2. I’m weaving in yarn ends as I knit. Simple strategy to be sure, but as I hate weaving in yarn ends, it tends to get left until minutes before the knit needs to be worn, gifted, or sold!

3. Each day after work, my first stop after taking off my coat is to light a candle. Instant fall smell in the house, instant stress relief for my brain, and it signifies my work day has ended!

4. I’m living with a smaller wardrobe. I’m participating in Project 333, and while I’m not doing it perfectly, I’m doing it the best way for me. I currently rotate through a much smaller wardrobe, and it’s relieved 95% of my morning routine stress!

5. I’m choosing now what I do and don’t want to make part of my holiday season. I love to send out holiday cards, so those are already taken care of – signed, addressed, and ready for stamps! I’m already thinking about how I want to decorate, and am ready to weed out anything that doesn’t fit. And I’m choosing to be okay with not having it all done now – better to set those realistic expectations while I’m still thinking clearly!

6. I’m praying in the shower. Yes, I do double-duty when it comes to prayer – I don’t think God minds. As it’s about the only alone-time I get during the day, I find that remembering to lift others up and give thanks while in the shower doesn’t seem as silly as not doing it at all!

7. I’m committed to knitting only from my yarn stash. Crafters in the mix know that we tend to bring in more supplies than we use – I’m stopping that leak by committing to not purchasing yarn until I’ve used up everything that I’ve got.

8. I’m hiring someone else. I’d love to have a fancy and amazing blog design, but am finally admitting I’m not up to the task. Instead of bringing all that stress onto myself, I’ve hired a new friend to do the grunt work for me, and so far it’s been a wonderful thing!

9. I threw out all my nail polish. The girly-girls reading may shake their heads, and yes I do love to have pretty nails and toes. Because I use my hands all day for work and knitting however, the polish gets gross pretty fast, and I’m not so good with the maintenance. So I’m removing that stress from my life and have tossed all my polish to the curb – I’m au natural from now on!

10. I’m switching to all-digital book reading. I’ve been lucky and have been able to find almost every book I’d like to read in digital format, so I’m making the commitment to switch fully over. There are a few books I cannot get in a digital format {I’m looking at you Harry Potter!}, and I’m not sure yet what to do about that, but everything else is going digital or I’m not reading it! Now that I can get digital books from my library, I’m ready to make the leap!

What sorts of things are you doing lately that are helping create a more minimalist environment? What are you culling from your life, and what are you choosing to be more mindful about?

** Robyn runs the website Minimalist Knitter, where she shares her love of knitting, crafting, and minimalism. She’s recently published the e-book Holiday Made Simple – packed full of tips and tricks for removing most of the stress from your holiday season, and she’s getting ready to expand her Etsy shop from just patterns to selling hand-knit accessories!
