Minimalizing My Teen Daughter’s Room

Minimize your teen's room
Crafty teens room

My teenager is 13 and is very artsy and creative.  She finds beauty in all things and I love learning from her point of view.  I knew minimalizing her room would be a balance.  I want to respect her artistic eye and creativity, and allow her to keep things that make her happy and feel at home in her own space in this great big world!

But…her room was becoming a health hazard!  Keeping all things that are beautiful to her eye quickly ends up in clutter.  Plus she is your typical girl teen that loves makeup and girly stuff.  I had to get creative with how to corral all of this type of stuff so we can get in there to even dust!

I did her room while she was at school (much more peaceful that way if you know what I mean!) but kept reminding myself to respect her stuff.  The items I thought she could get rid of I placed in a small bin and had her go through it when she got home.  When she was younger, I would just get rid of stuff on the sly, and she never knew. Now that she is older I want to respect who she is and keep trust in our relationship, so I made sure I didn’t get rid of anything but trash….which really cleared up the room!

We will start with some “before” pics so you can appreciate the “after.” {smile}

Messy teens room

We only have 2 bathrooms and the 2nd is very small and upstairs, so Teagan gets ready in her room.  The mirror area is where she does her makeup/hair.  By having her desk so close to this area, it constantly was being used as a catch all instead of for homework or getting creative.  I knew we needed to remedy this problem.

Trash under bed

Under her bed?  90% of it was trash.  Easy to clean up.  I also grabbed a bed frame that was in our garage that sits quite high so sweeping under her bed is now a breeze.  It is high enough to see under from the door so I will know if things start getting stuffed under there.  {smile}

Desk for crafts

Ok, enough before pics.  Here is what I did with her desk.  I moved it over to a different wall, away from her beauty area.  She now uses it for her duct tape business, creating & studying.  Do you love how she made a smiley face on her plant pot?  That made me smile.

Crafting bins for teen room

I topped her desk with things that I knew were important to her.  The beaded elephant was her special purchase from Disney.  The white pot she made herself.  The wooden piggy bank she also made in shop class at school.  Her little water fountain is a fun touch to the room.  Those baskets hold crafting supplies.  Isn’t the stool cute?  She painted that one day & I just love it.

Teen room and bed with sock monkey

See how high up her bed is now?  Very helpful for keeping it clean.  I put her table and lamp right by the bed and a little catch- all bowl.  Right now it has packages of gum and mints in it.

Teen room after clean

If I would have taken “before” pics of this area, you would see all kinds of stuff (scarves, necklaces, whistles) hanging from those shutters.  I couldn’t stand the clutter so I found creative ways to deal with those things, which I will share later in the post.  I did allow her to keep her Roo’s hanging there.

Shelves for teen girls room

Oh if only you could have seen the “before” of these shelves.  It looked very much like the “before” of her desk.    I found those plastic drawer organizers on sale at Target for 2 bucks each.  So perfect for all the little things my girl values but has no place for.  Can you see her creative brain working on the top of the bookshelves?

Art area for teen girl

The little wooden sticks in the bottom left corner with goggly eyes belonged to her Great Grandpa.  I love how special they are to her…she is the perfect person to cherish such a fun and quirky object.  She made the gargoyle in clay class, and drew the dragon a couple years ago.  In that box is her wand from Harry Potter World.  All things that matter to her.

Twisted Tape and inventory

She has a business called Twisted Tape.  These two shelves hold her tape and inventory.  There are cabinets under these shelves that hold her mailing supplies.

Accessories for teen girl

I had to get a system for her accessories.  They were just scattered and made dusting impossible.  I brought in little platters, one for bracelets, one for rings, one for bobby pins and hair elastics.  I took a good look what made up the bulk of her clutter and made little homes for those items.

How to organize a bedroom

I took my own advice from my post 14 Ways To Organize A Bedroom, and used #2 to organize her 10 scarves.  I also used the idea of #7 and put a tension rod across the bottom shelf of her bookshelf where her necklaces now hang.  I didn’t get a photo, but both have been working really well!

Beauty products

It is helpful to use platters to corral beauty products, too.  I’m so glad I had these on hand.  Garage sales and thrift stores are great for finding these.

Snow globe collection

I only allow one collection displayed per girl.  This is Teagan’s snow globe collection.  She has been collecting since she was itty bitty.  Also a couple clay pots she made in school when she was younger.

containers for makeup

More containers to organize her makeup.  I did her room a few weeks ago these little containers make the world of difference.  She has been able to keep her room quite clean…and if it does get messy, she knows exactly where to put things.  Everything has a home in her room now.

Clean teen girl's room

The finished product.  She was happy with it and ended up getting rid of most of the stuff in the bin.  I would not call her room minimal, but it is organized and she feels happy when in there, and it is no longer a health hazard!

Minimalize and Get Organized

Definition of minimize
We are halfway through a minimalizing series here at New Nostalgia.  I have loved every minute of it…truly!  I cannot tell you the difference it is making in our home.  I have done the below spaces, plus 2 teen rooms, my lil’ ones room, my room & our kitchen.  I have yet to put those posts together for you, but I can’t wait to share with you!  I also can’t wait to show you our landing are upstairs.  It has become the catch all place, and it is a danger zone!  A complete wreck.  But..the rest of the house is looking great and I will get area at the very last.
It is summer break and I actually feel like I am on break!  REALLY.  I am not spending my days clearing clutter, dusting clutter, putting away clutter thanks to the work I put in the last few weeks. Now I am on a slow pace now that most of the house has been done. We have taken 3 jeep loads of stuff to the local Goodwill and I have about one more left.  I can’t believe we had that much stuff as I am one who gets rid of stuff quite regularly.  But, when looking at things in my house through a minimalist eye, asking myself..”do I really want to dust this?” “Do I love this enough to deal with it on a daily basis?”.. it really makes a difference in what I keep and what I don’t. This also applies to what I buy.  Even if it is on sale, is it important enough and special enough to take my precious time on this earth dealing with it? Yeah, sales seem less appealing now, for sure.
My Minimalizing Series-we are halfway there!

14 Ways To Organize A Bedroom

Minimizing a teen's room

I am in the middle of a Minimalizing My Home series, and I find myself lacking motivation.  I have saved the worst rooms for last, and they seem to have gotten worse as the areas I have worked on have gotten better!

I needed some motivation to tackle my next room–my 13 year old daughter’s room.  She has lots of accessories as most 13 year old’s do. She is artsy and clutter is beautiful to her, so it is going to be a tough one!  The key is some smart organization in her room so I have been collecting some pins from my Organizational Boards on Pinterest to motivate me.

Here are some I plan on using to help organize her bedroom:

14 ways to organize a bedroom

1.Use tension rods + shower rings/hooks for accessories via Our House In the Middle of Our Street2. Rings for scarves via Irina’s Cute Box

3. Cut shoe boxes in half for drawer organizers via Real Simple

4. Picture frame photo holders.  (I will have to paint these in black or silver) via Nannygoat

5. Tea cup hooks with clips for small paper or photos via This Is Glamorous

6. Another example of picture frame holders with clips via Less Than Perfect

7. Another example of hooks for jewelry via Martha Stewart8. Tension rods for shoe organization via Niche Designs

14 ways to organize a bedroom

9. More tension rods for jewelry organization via Something Like That
10. Clear organizer for makeup via Sew Many Ways
11. Silverware organizer for makeup via Glitter Guide
12.Hangers with clips for boots via Browne Eyed Belle
13. Letter organizers for flip flop or flats storage via Hearty-Home
14. Bend wire hangers for flip flop storage via EPBOT————–

Looks like I need to stock up on tension rods and hooks!  I will post an update once I finish her room.  Wish me luck!

Minimalizing My Hall Closet & Drawers

Minimalizing my hall closet
Our hall closet (really it is a cabinet & 3 drawers) is one of my most favorite things in our house.  You would think that if this is the case I would take better care of it…but no, at least not lately.  IT WAS A MESS!

Before and after organizing hall closet

Not anymore!  In less than 45 minutes, the cabinet & 3 drawers were minimalized & organized.  There was not much to giveaway, but a ton to throw away!  Old, empty bottles, dried up polish, broken curling irons.

As you can see in the above picture, we keep towels (more on towels later), & first aid on the upper shelf.  Underneath I have a bin for beauty products on the right, a bin for manicure supplies in the middle, & a bin of natural ingredients to make some of my natural beauty products…like Homemade Natural Lip Balm.

These cabinets are deep, which I love, so behind the bins I have several different sized curling irons.

Before and after organizing hall closet
On the top shelf, I have a bin that contains our nebulizer (which I think I can get rid of soon as my asthma girl is 9 and uses an inhaler if she gets in trouble), our foot bath & epsom salt.
Now, most people would probably throw that foot bath out and say it takes up too much space, but you have to remember I am a cosmetologist & know how to give professional pedicures, so the foot bath stays!
Before and after organizing drawers
On to the drawers.  This drawer holds…you ready?
~Toilet Paper
~Paper Towels
~Light Bulbs
~Batteries
~Tea Light Candles
~”Unmentionables”
Doesn’t it look so much better?
Before and after organizing drawers

The 2nd drawer holds all things hair.  I have 3 girls.  Age 13, 12 & 9.  With girls comes lots of girly hair “stuff.”

~The first bucket has bobby pins and hair elastics.
~The second bucket has fun little bows that my 9 year old still wears.
~The third bucket has headbands that they all wear.
~The fourth bucket holds combs and brushes.

Before and after organizing hair product drawer

On to the bottom drawer.

Like I said, I am a cosmetologist/hairstylist.  I have not worked in a salon for over 10 years but I still have fun doing friends/sisters/daughters hair.  This bottom drawer is everything I need for that.

On to the process:

Organizing shelves

It only minutes to get to this stage, because I took everything to the dining room table.

Getting rid of clutter in the house

I started with getting rid of obvious trash.  I then started putting “like with like” into piles.

Organizing hall closet

This is about halfway through.  I washed the bins out as I went.  They were gross.

first aid bin
Here is our first aid/cold care/allergy care bin…minus the first aid kit.  It didn’t make it into the shot.
first aid kit in hall closet
I like this in an easy-to-grab spot.
Organizing towels

Let’s talk towels.  If you read my bathroom makeover post, you will know that we have hooks in our bathroom for towels.  Each family member has their own hook and a different color.  The towels you see here on the right are for guests.  The towels you see on the left are old towels that I use when coloring peoples hair.  The grey washcloths are…well..grey wash clothes.  The girls and I use them to wash our faces.

Towels on hook in bathroom

I love our towel system.  I am no longer washing towels 24/7, and I no longer have to cringe when I  hear “SOMEBODY please bring me a towel” after a child gets into the shower without a towel.  They are always there, on the hook, and I wash them once a week or more if needed.

Nail Polish bin

Ok, I know this does not look minimal, especially the nail polish bin…BUT WE LOVE manicures around here.  It is something we do often, as I AM a professional you know.  It is something my girls like to do when they have friends over.  Speaking of friends over, our neighbor girl was over when I was cleaning and she is the one who went through each and every nail polish, throwing out the ones that were old and thick.  What a sweetie!

Beauty products organized

As far as beauty products, this is not too bad for a house of girls, huh?

Minimalizing My Sunroom

Minimalizing a sunroom

The sunroom was another easy room.  I had worked on it not too long ago, so it was not too bad.  There were some things in there that were winter so it felt great to put those things away.

Organizing a sunroom

We don’t have a huge backyard, so the girls play in the front yard quite often.  Especially when using their roller blades, ripsticks, bikes & scooters.  Our garage connected to the back of the house, so we like to keep these things that they use often in the sunroom to make it easy on them to grab and play.

Getting rid of clutter

The put-away pile and give away pile were just little.  The put away was potting soil, yard tools, snow boots, and snow shovel.  Almost all of these things belong in the garage.  Just 3 little things for my giveaway pile.  Oh well.  Better than nothing, huh?

Rescuing My Stairs and A Hot Spot – A Series On Minimalizing My Home

Before organizing
{BEFORE}
after organizing
{AFTER}
We will start with what I call a hot spot, because my stairs are very scary and I really want you to stick around.
A hot spot is an area that seems to collect clutter if you don’t stay on top of it.  They are usually areas that just take minutes to get under control. This ledge is a major hot spot in our home.  It is right in the center of our home and seems like the perfect place to put little things that really should be put away where they go!
I’m finding a big part of the clutter around here is due to our home office being unorganized.  There seems to be a lot of office supplies that I’m coming across, in our junk drawer, on this ledge, on our stairs.  Once our home office is minimalized, I think we will all be better with getting this stuff where it belongs.
This hot spot only took about 5 minutes.  I grabbed everything off the ledge and put it on our table.
Here is what it looked like:
Clutter from around the house

I started with making piles of things.  Like with like.  It helped to get whatever looked like trash out first.  Then I had office supply pile, an earring pile, a pile of hair bands & combs, a pile of papers that needed attention, and some miscellaneous stuff.

Organizing clutter
By putting them into piles, it made it easier to put them all away.   The office supplies were put in my our home study, which was hard to know where to put them because I have yet to declutter that room and it seems to be getting worse and worse as my other rooms get better! I’m finding this true for all of the left over rooms that I have yet to minimalize. I started with the easiest rooms of our home and I’m gradually getting to the rough ones.  Not only did these rooms start out rough, but as I get stuff put away from other rooms, these unfinished rooms just keep getting piles added.  Ugh.  They are going to be a joy! At least I will have you all here along with me to see all the joyfulness.  Ha.
Organizing your stairway

So on to the scary stairs.  I shared this picture in an earlier post.  I confessed to loading things onto the stairs as I minimalized rooms instead of putting things away.  Now for the most part, it is not as lazy as it looks, because most of that stuff DOES go upstairs.  But it had piled up way worse than I ever let it, as the rest of my house was getting minimalized.

Rubbermaid tubs for organizing
These Rubbermaid tubs came to the rescue.  They are really neat because they have a door that swings down so you can get to them from the side.  So clever!  I marked them Giveaway, Put Away, & Trash.
I have found that they are perfect to use as I go about with my decluttering and minimalizing.  Especially once I got the stairs under control, I started using the bins to keep them that way!
Organizing on the dining table
I did the same thing with the stairs as I did with the hot spot.  It took about 15 minutes.  Here is what our table looked like 1/2 way through.  It may not look like it, but I am making ‘like with like’ piles to make putting it all away much easier.
Organizing clutter on the staircase
Here are the stairs halfway through.  Getting better!  Getting safer!!
Bins used for organizing
I had my bins close by and used the trash bin and also the giveaway bin.  The put away bin sat empty as I needed the large space of my table for this large chore.
Minimalizing in the home
See what I mean?  Oh boy.  The shoes and leggings in the front go to my room.  The books are library books and it was so nice to have a specific drawer in the living room for those.  I had a crafty pile and a beauty supply pile.  I had a seasonal pile of things that need put away for winter, and the far left of the pic is a large pile of my daughters things, as her room is upstairs and her stuff often gets put on the stairs, but not taken up!
It felt great to see that my Giveaway Bin was getting full.  I will take that out to the trunk.  This bin load will fill my trunk so I will be dropping off my first trunk load of Giveaway stuff to Goodwill in a couple days.  Yay me!!
Staircase all organized

Ahhh…so much better.

New nostalgia pinterest board floors

After my house is minimalized, I will be turning my attention to some home projects.  Something I’ve wanted to do for awhile was get rid of ugly stair carpet and refinish the stairs in some way.  I have been collecting some fun ideas on my Home: Floors board at Pinterest.

Those 3 baskets that you see in my pic above are for the 3 rooms upstairs.  The master bedroom, the craft room and my daughters room.  My husband is convinced they just collect clutter and just “whatever” gets thrown in there, even stuff that does not belong.  He has got a point.

Am I better off without them?  OR do we enforce consequences to little ones who put things in the wrong basket or things that do not belong on the stairs in them?  It would also help to mark the baskets so there is NO excuse.

Advice?

Baskets for stairway

How about this idea for baskets on the stairs is from Sew Many Ways?  She calls them crap baskets and has one for each family member.  That is an idea!  She puts whatever she finds around the house in the baskets and they are responsible for putting them away.  Maybe this would be a better idea for me.  I only have 3 baskets for the 3 areas upstairs, but this idea might be better.

How do you handle stairs and the things that belong up them?

I love hearing that you are all minimalizing too, so let me know if you are!

Minimalizing My Dining Room

Minimizing dining room
A series in minimalizing.  For my Living Room Post, click here.
Today I minimalized my Dining Room.  This room is right off the living room and is another room that does not often get to cluttered.  These are the first two rooms you see when you walk in our front door, so I tend to keep them up.  Stay tuned for future rooms to see the REAL clutter!
Before and after minimalizing dining room

The corner bookshelf is really the only thing that collects clutter. I tried to keep only things that are necessary or meaningful to me. We keep our white board markers/erasers in a basket–see our whiteboard for chores in the far right on the wall? The red box holds cd’s that I like to play in my under-the-cabinet player in my kitchen.  There is a picture frame from our family Disney trip and photos of my girls.  All things worth keeping.  I just cleared a few things from the bookshelf and gave it a quick dusting.

Before and after getting rid of clutter

Remember, even though I do have cleaning supplies out, WE ARE NOT CLEANING.  We are minimalizing.  A purging of sorts.  We have to train our brains to ignore the dirt and only focus on minimizing the items that we no longer need, love or that need to be put elsewhere.  If we do this then cleaning will be a breeze.  We will get to cleaning eventually.

Broom, duster, vacuum, trash bag

I DO have the broom, duster and vacuum nearby for the big nasty chunks.  You know, the dust bunnies that appear when you decided to move a bookshelf to another room or to get the layer of dust under knickknacks that are no longer wanted or loved.  It is just for a quick maintenance.  A fake clean if you will.  DO NOT GET OBSESSIVE and start cleaning.  That will come later.
Things To Have Close By When Minimalizing
1. Broom
2. Duster
3. Vacuum
4. Trash Bag
5. Bin for Giveaway
6. Bin for Things That Belong Elsewhere
Scentsy pot on shelf
This is the shelf I put my Scentsy Pot.  that was from the Living Room.  In my Living Room post I talked about how it was hidden and not getting used.  That lamp is also from a shelf that I moved out of the living room.  I love the glow it gives our Dining Room in the evening when the household slows down.  The Dining Room is a central location so it works great.  I have pens and pencils in a holder, (notice they all match, a touch of OCD), as homework is done at the table and my daughters need me to sign folders each day.  I have a little succulent plant that makes me happy, and a holder for my most favorite cookbooks.  I made the Simplfy sign. Tutorial here.
Minimizing your house
{lamp that I took from the Living Room}
Organizing piano books
Our piano is in the dining room and the basket they put their books in gets mess.  It felt good to organize it.  See those earphones? They are a God- send some days!
Hot spot for clutter
This ledge separates our Living Room and Dining Room.  It is what I call a ‘hot spot.’  It collects clutter all the time.  Ugh.  Notice there is no ‘after’ pic.  I didn’t get to clearing it off yet.  Tomorrow!
Organizing the clutter
Here is what I was able to purge from the Dining Room. Some of it is giveaway, some of it belongs elsewhere. Not bad, not bad.  Just wait until we get to my office & girls rooms.  I will need my bins out for those rooms!!

Got any questions about Minimalizing for me?
