DIY Art Bags

Back to school supplies

Creating is something I have always encouraged in our home, even when my girls were little wee ones. We have always made sure paper and colors are available for them to use whenever they want. As they have gotten older, I have worked hard to make sure they have access to age-appropriate supplies, so that they can create whatever their art brains desire.

We have rolling carts with labeled drawers upstairs where we keep all their craft supplies, and use them a lot, but I also wanted to have basic supplies handy on our main floor that they could just grab and start creating with!

My solution was to make them each their own little school supply art bag. I shopped for these at the beginning of the school year when all the supplies were super cheap. I found the bag at Wal-mart in the craft supply section. All of the bags are black, but I made them distinct with certain supplies that were all the same color (my youngest daughter likes blue so her scissors, pencil sharpener and pencil erasers are all blue.) This is how they tell which bag is theirs.
IMG_6294
I keep the bags in a very central location (our dining room) right by the table, not only because they are in view and the girls will use them more if they see them, but also so I can make sure they take good care of their bags and put them away properly.  Our table is also where they do their homework so the bags are very handy for that!  I am pretty strict about keeping them in the dining room to use at the table.  I only allow them in the car for  trips that are longer than an hour.
Before, we had supplies on all 3 levels of our home and showing up in places where they didn’t belong! I grew weary of questions like “Mom, where’s my little scissors?” and “Mom, where’s the tape?” Now that they are in one area it has worked so well.  They know right where they are, and find them daily, sitting on a shelf waiting for little creative hands to grab and use them!
Update:
I originally wrote this post when my girls were 6, 9 & 10.  They are now 10, 12 & 14.  Now that they are older, we are down to one bag.  I’m all about simplifying, and it was overkill to have 3 bags now that they are older because they are rarely doing art at the same time.  If they do, they are old enough to share, and in the car we have ipods that keep them busy so the art bag is easily shared there, too.

A 4th of July Greeting + 4th of July Treat Holders Written by AveryBowman, Age 9

I hope you are all having a wonderful 4th of July day.  Our day has consisted of lots of swimming, great food and wonderful family time.  I feel full in every way, and incredibly thankful for my freedom and health!  Happy 4th of July!

firecracker crafts made out of toilet paper rolls

***photos by Avery Bowman (my 9-year-old)

My Avery girl is always up to something crafty.  She loves searching my Pinterest boards for crafty ideas and then making her own versions of what inspires her.

I woke up this morning and she was in her room at her desk, putting the finishing touches on these cute little 4th of July treat holders.  Her desk looked like a firework full of glitter and paint exploded on it, and the creative mess made me smile, especially when I saw the July calendar she made. I love that she marked church on Sundays and family nights on Fridays. So sweet.

I handed her my phone and asked if she would take some photos of her work.  She did such a good job.  I think it is only appropriate that SHE is the one who tells who how she made these cute little Fourth Of July Treat Holders.

Hi Everyone!

It is Avery here.

Thanks for reading my post. I hope you enjoy it.

Here is what you need to make Fourth Of July TP Treat Holders.

*Toilet paper roll

*Red, white, and blue paint

*Glitter (optional)

*Paintbrush

*Scissors

*Tape

*Plastic bag, tissue paper or wax paper

*String

*Last but not least, Candy!!!

First, what you do is take the toilet paper roll and paint it however you want.

After that sprinkle, a little glitter over it before the paint tries so it sticks.

Then cut the plastic bag or tissue paper into a rectangle

Add tape to the bottom of the paper.

Tape the paper to the end of the roll, then twist and tie with string.

Fill with any type of treat or candy.  Could also fill with confetti.

Tape the bottom of the TP roll closed.

I used Starburst candy and the cool thing about it is that if you think of the word, it has the word “star” in it, which is good for the 4th of July!

I can’t wait to see the look on my family’s faces when they see what I made for them.  Hopefully my sisters won’t see this post before I give it to them!

Happy 4th of July Everyone!

DIY Patterned Flats

DIY Patterned flats

I love the look of striped and patterned flats for spring! But I did NOT want to pay $50-100 for a pair of shoes from Madewell or Toms. So when I saw some white flats at Walmart for $5, I decided to create my own! Here’s how I did it:

How to make patterned flats

1// Using masking tape, create a striped pattern on your shoes. I used ½ inch artists tape because it peels off so easily but you can use whatever you have on hand.

2// Grab a black Sharpie marker. I used Stained by Sharpie fabric markers but again you can use whatever permanent markers you have.

3// Start creating a triangle pattern. They definitely do not have to be perfectly equal or even triangles but it helps to draw down to use your tape to keep them in a straight line.

4// As you work your way down the front of the shoe, you can move the tape with you so that all of the triangles are straight and at least the same length.

5// Once the pattern is finished, color the trim of the shoe black to help give it a finished look.

6// Repeat for the second shoe. If you’re watching something to help pass the time, be careful not to mess up your pattern. As you can see, I got a little distracted. Whoopsies!

Blue and white striped flats
An easier and much less time consuming pattern is a simple doodled stripe.

Making your own patterned flats

1// Just like the last pattern, you’ll tape an evenly spaced striped pattern on your shoes.

2// This time I also continued the stripe around the sides and back of my flats.

3// With a colored or black Sharpie, practice doodling on a sheet of paper to decided how solid and dark you want your stripe to be.  Since my shoes were worn, I wanted the stripe to be a little more casual and left my lines pretty light and open-spaced.

4// Begin doodling in between the tape spaces. I would start light – you can always go back and darken the pattern.

5// When you’re done, peel off the masking tape to reveal your striped design.

6// I left the trim of my flats white, but you could also color them in to give it a more finished look.

Finished!

This was so easy that I’d love to create a few more pairs.
What would be some other cute designs to try? Share your ideas below!

DIY Photo-Holder Magnets

It can be so fun to decorate the refrigerator with cute family photos! But something that drives me crazy is mismatched random magnets that distract from the photos and make everything look cluttered. I have a little stash of cute Washi tape so I decided to get creative and fix this problem by making some of my own refrigerator magnets. This project was so quick and easy!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Craft accessories

Here’s how I did it:

Washi tape on clothespin
1// Carefully line up the washi tape with an end of a clothespin. (I get my tape here – link towww.etsy.com/shop/prettytape)

2// Snip away excess tape.

3// Remove adhesive cover from magnet and stick it to the back of the clothespin.

4// These come in strips too if you don’t want your magnet to show – I happened to have round magnets on hand so I used those.

Photo holder magnets
5//Add adorable family photos! These are my siblings-in-law and their sweet girls. Have you ever seen a cuter family?

Finished!

DIY Layered Necklace

DIY Layered Necklace

by Laurie Cosgrove
Arts & Crafts Contributor

Happy Saturday! I love getting crafty on the weekends and today I have a really fun funky necklace craft for you to try. I recently got inspired when I saw this necklace and this necklace on pinterest. I think layering up accessories can make the most basic outfit trendy and cute. You could just pile on three or four pieces to achieve this look but if you’re like me, there isn’t always time for that. I usually throw on an accessory as I’m running out the door, so untangling and fastening several necklaces probably isn’t going to happen often. Since I made this necklace last week, I’ve worn it with three different outfits and it seemed to transform each one of them. I loved that I could just grab it and go.

Here’s how to make one of your own…

Making a layered necklace

You’ll need:
>A set of pliers
>Three or more necklace chains
>A variety of charms
>An extra link (optional)

Chinese symbol charm

For my chains, I just recycled a couple from old necklaces I never wear and then purchased the last one from Walmart for $2. The charms and extra links were also found at Walmart . I really like the look of round discs and found these with Chinese symbols in the dollar bin. I’m not really sure what they say but hope it’s nothing too crazy;) I also love keys so I grabbed a set of those as well.

Layering necklaces

Step 1 | String a charm onto the longest chain. This will probably be the main focal point of your necklace so you might want to choose this to be the largest charm as well. On the second longest chain, string another charm (I chose the key).

Charm necklaces

Step 2 | Decide where you want the second charm to lay on the finished product. I wanted the key to be attached to the first necklace a few inches above the disc. To do this, use your pliers and pry open an extra link, slide it through the chain and the charm where you want it. Then close the link with your pliers.

Step 3 | Combine the two necklaces together. Using your pliers again, open the links closest to the clasps on your longest necklace and slide them through the ends of your second longest necklace. Then you can remove any extra clasps or extra length of chain so that only one clasp is holding the two chains together.

layering charm necklaces

Step 4 | Take a third chain (probably the smallest) and slide on any last charms. Then decide where you want this one to lay. Combine the third chain with the other two like we did in Step 3 with your pliers. You should end up with three necklaces connected by one clasp.

Finished product (layered necklace)

Finished!
Note: If you’re unsure about where the necklace should lay, a good rule of thumb is to measure in face lengths. For example, measure one face length from your chin to the top of your necklace (the first charms) and then another face length to the bottom of your necklace.

DIY pillow

Hi everyone! I am excited to be joining the New Nostalgia team & look forward to getting artsy & creating beauty with all of you.
For a long time, my excuses for not putting effort into my home decor were “I don’t have the money” or “My crafting skills stink!” But more and more I’m realizing that I don’t have to spend $50 on one item from Pottery Barn and I CAN make things myself.  I’m even beginning to like things a little imperfect and surprising instead of having that cookie-cutter catalog look in my house.
Having something cute in your house is fun.  Having something cute + “yours” in your house makes it feel more like home.
One of the projects I recently tried was this DIY No-Sew Type Pillow.  Being a graphic designer, I’ve been swooning over every decor item on Pinterest featuring typography.  I was starting to feel like I couldn’t really call myself a designer without at least ONE ampersand in my house!  So a DIY project was in order and this is what I came up with!

Instructions:
1. Gather Materials // Get all of your supplies together in one place (preferably with good music or a movie on.  I parked it in front of Downton Abby).  You definitely do not have to buy the pillow and fabric brand new.  My pillow is from the clearance aisle at Walmart and my fabric was an old pillow case.
You will need:

~Colored fabric
~Toss Pillow or pillow cover
~Pencil
~x-acto knife
~Cutting surface/cardboard box
~Fabric tape
~Candle
~Printed stencil*
2. Trace Design // Using a pencil (lightly) trace the design on the back side of your fabric.  If you’re using a stencil, make sure to flip it backwards.  If you’re going to free-hand it like I did you might want to draw on the front of your fabric and cut just inside the pencil line.
3. Cut Out Design // Lay out your colored fabric over a cutting surface – I just used a cardboard box on the floor.  Using your X-acto knife (or really sharp scissors) cut your design out of the fabric.

Ampersand pillow

4. Seal Edges // You might notice some fraying around the edges of your fabric.  Too fix it, hold your design close to the heat of a candle and slowly turn it so that all of the edges start to harden. (not too close!! It will catch on fire and you’ll have to start again- not fun!)
5. Attach to Pillow // Once your design is fully sealed, you can position it where you want it on the pillow or cover.  If your design is pretty simple and your pillow isn’t going to get a lot of wear, you can use fabric tape to attach it to your pillow.  if you think it’s going to get tossed around a lot (or regularly trampled by your children) you can pin it in place and sew a basic stitch around the outside of your design to attach it to the pillow.
6. Place It // Give yourself a high-five now that it’s done! You can even run over it lightly with an iron to finish and then give the pillow a chop to fluff it up again.  Put it somewhere that makes you smile (and Instagram that baby ASAP).

Ampersand pillow

*By the way, you can replace the ampersand design with something else- like a monogram of a silhouette design (deer head silhouettes are fun!). Make it something you really love.  You can use my pages below or create your own.  Have fun!

DIY Personalized Canvas

I have a good friend that signs his letters or chats off with the phrase “Love and Light.” That phrase has become a super special between the two of us, as it was weaved into a eulogy I gave for his dear sister, my sweet friend.  When the anniversary of her passing was approaching, I wanted to make him a gift that was meaningful.  I decided to make him a personalized canvas with his phrase, ‘Love & Light’ on it.  I wanted something super simple looking, not too fussy.  It was for a guy after all!  I was inspired by a pin I saw on pinterest.  The pin is actually linked to personal canvases that are being sold for $345.00!  Whoa.  I will make my own thankyouverymuch.

I started at the craft store, and was able to buy the square canvases in bulk, 4 for $20.00.  Not bad!  The craft store also had all kinds of fun wooden letters and shapes.  This project is really versatile. You can make it more holiday themed with the words “Merry Christmas!”  You could make one that said “Let It Snow!” and put white glitter on the letters.  You could put your child’s name and add little miniature wooden clothespins to hold special papers.  You could put a bride and grooms name and wedding date on one.  The possibilities really are endless.
I started with gluing on the wooden letters, by simply brushing the backs with glue.
Here is the brand I used.
Let the glue dry.  This didn’t take long.
Then simply spray paint, making sure to get all edges of the canvas and the letters.
I made another for myself with one of my most favorite words–Simplify.
Once the spray paint is dried, add a pearl finish to the letters which makes them catch the light and stand out a bit.  I love the effect this gave them.  I also recommend sealing with a clear gesso or some type of spray sealant.  I didn’t do this step, but in hindsight I think it would make for easier cleaning/dusting.
Let me know if you make on of these!  They can be any size, color, glitter added or not, any word or any wooden shape.
DIY Personalized Canvas
1. Position wooden letters to canvas.
2. Brush with glue, glue into place, let dry.
3. Spray paint entire piece.
4. Add pearl effect to letters only.
5. Seal with spay sealant.
Let me know if you have any other fun ideas for this project in the comments!
