Throwing A Graduation Party for Over 200 People

Graduation Party Table Decor

It is quite a feat throwing a graduation party for over 200. Thank goodness I was not alone in it, as my 2 sisters-in-law also had graduates this year, so my Teagan and her cousins decided to do a joint graduation party.

This made sense because we have a large family and many friends in common, so it would save many of them from having to attend 3 different parties.

Thank goodness my gracious in-laws have an amazing space with a large patio, deck, and yard that we could use. It was the perfect venue!

We crossed our fingers for good weather and it turned out to be a nice day…cloudy but nice.

Planning a Graduation Party

My sisters-in-law’s and I used the convenience of group text to do most of our communicating.

We also used our monthly family Pizza Sunday tradition as opportunities to start planning and met together one evening at a coffee shop as the time drew near.

This was much fun and I find myself missing our constant group texts! I love the friendship we have and am so grateful for them.

My hope for you (if you are here reading before planning your own graduation party) is that hearing how we did it will give you some tips, tricks, and direction in how to plan yours!

My Anxiety Over The Graduation Party – What Not to Do!

I have to admit, I started feeling a bit of anxiety over planning a graduation party early in the school year.

Want to know my biggest dread? Finding and organizing photos from my Teagan’s lifetime. Seriously! I was so hard on myself for being so unorganized with photos.

I had visions of photos being perfectly filed away by year on my computer and put a ton of pressure on myself to have this done by the party.

Yeah, that didn’t happen.

Just when I think I have learned to let go of my perfectionist ways…something comes along and I get to practice letting go again!

I know I am not alone in having some photos tucked away in shoeboxes, some on disks, some on an old computer that has not been turned on for years, etc. Tell me I am not alone!

See why I had to let go of my perfect vision of perfectly perfect digitized, alphabetized, organized by year photos? Too many photos in too many places.

Thankfully this was much less of a hassle than I thought it would be. I cannot tell you how relieved I felt when I realized it was not going to be as big of a deal as I thought.

My Teagan took the initiative in gathering her favorite photos, and I decided to let go of perfection. It was a joy to see what memories and photos she was personally drawn to and her choices really showed her character as they were full of meaningful people and occasions.

She found treasures in that photo shoebox, and we used an app called Photomyne that digitizes them in minutes, by taking a photo of several hard copy photos. It then scans them and you have digital photos in seconds!

We used these digital files to make a quick iphoto slideshow to play on my laptop next to her grad table. It was a nice personal touch and people enjoyed standing there watching our girl grow up right before their eyes.

I let go of perfection which means we did not have a photo of her for every single year and stage of her life, but we had so, so many precious memories to remind us of what a blessing she has been to raise and parent.

The Layout – Decide Where and What

We talked early about where we would put the food table, beverage table, dessert table and 3 grad tables. These were all kept indoors just in case of rain.

We put 5 round tables outside (3 on the patio and 2 on the deck) which was enough to seat about 40 people.

The food buffet table was in the dining room, the dessert table was displayed front and center as we knew it would be beautiful and we wanted it out for all to enjoy.

The beverage table was kept near the dessert table. We did talk about putting it outside, but then decided we didn’t want to worry about cups blowing away.

Our graduate display tables were all in the main living room area, and there was also extra seating in there with several couches comfy chairs and benches.

Tips:

  • Keep the weather in mind and plan accordingly.
  • Think about how you want the ‘flow’ of the party. Where people will walk when they enter, how they will get to the grad tables and food tables.
  • Keep the pretty tables front and center! Our dessert table was so pretty that it was like one big giant decorative element.

Graduate Tables

The graduate table is the perfect place to get personal and let your graduate’s personality shine.

My Teagan had some great ideas for hers, letting me know she wanted a pallet to hang some photos in a creative way, also that she wanted her love for succulents to show and help beautify her table.

She shopped at local thrift stores and found a fun gold tree with branches to hang her wallet senior pictures on, and we used elements from nature, like wood (simple wooden cutting boards from our kitchen became display boards), airplants and succulents.

{Do you love the wooden airplant holders? They are from Outpost Love and for purchase}

She had envelopes with directions for people to leave their address so she could thank them for coming. She also had a journal sitting out with a sign that said: “write a note to the graduate” which ended up being such a special keepsake.

She chose the photos she wanted to display, and we framed one large senior photo and had framed collage of photos of her growing up, along with a slideshow playing nearby on my laptop.

She also had her college acceptance letter, different scholarships and certificates displayed, and all her marathon tags gathered on a ring.

A candle and string lights added some nice sparkle to her table. It was so fun to take the elements she gathered and create a table that reflected my girl!

Tips:

  • Think about your graduate’s personality and what they love, and reflect it in the table decor
  • Shop thrift stores and your own home for items that have the look you are going for, think about bringing in an element from nature and different textures to add interest.
  • The element of light can make a table warm and welcoming. A table lamp, battery operated string lights or twinkle lights and a candle can create nice ambiance on your table.

Graduation Food Table

We decided early that we wanted to have a burrito bowl buffet from Chipotle and ideally would cater in the chicken, fajita veggies, and rice.

We would then get the toppings from Sam’s and Costco. This would allow us to have more control over the toppings and would be cost-effective, but we would not have to worry about cooking.

Chipotle has a policy where you have to order their entire buffet (including toppings) and would not allow us to order individual entries.

We ended up using Qdoba catering instead, and they did an amazing job, provided delicious chicken, fajita veggies, and rice, set it all up for us in a timely manner and made us very happy!

We rounded out the buffet by purchasing our own toppings (guacamole, shredded cheese, tortilla chips, salsa, and sour cream.)

I can’t tell you how yummy these burrito bowls were, and the addition of the fajita veg made it very vegetarian-friendly.

Also, by going with Qdoba instead of Chipotle, we cut the cost by 2/3rds without compromising on taste.  When you are providing food for 200-300, this is a substantial amount of savings.

Tips:

  • Don’t hesitate to call around for different prices of food, and be flexible with initial plans. By doing this we saved hundreds of dollars and you can too!
  • Decide what is worth paying for. It was huge that we didn’t have to worry about cooking and allowed us to really enjoy the process.
  • You don’t have to cater the entire meal. Decide what makes the most sense (and save the most cents, if that is a desire) for you and your situation.

Graduation Dessert - Macaroons & Cupcakes

Graduation Dessert Table

This was the fun part! We decided to bring all our white or clear glass platters and cake stands. Between the 3 of us, ended up having so many beautiful things to create a beautiful dessert table.

We each decided what dessert we would bring, and our graduates had a good say in this!

My Teagan decided she wanted cupcakes because she knew her little sister had mad skills in decorating them and would make them pretty!

We made 150 cupcakes, which really was a breeze because we used boxed cake mixes and homemade frosting. I baked the cupcakes the night before, and my youngest daughter, Avery, rocked the frosting the morning of the graduation party.

My one sister-in-law brought macarons, which make any dessert table look instantly delicious and special!

She also took some brownie bites from Sam’s (the ones in the shape of mini muffins) put a bit of chocolate frosting on top to help hold on a fresh raspberry. Oh, the cuteness of these! I thought it was a brilliant idea and a great way to provide little bite-sized beauties for a large crowd.

My other sister-in-law covered our gluten-free crowd, as her son eats gluten-free. She made her famous gluten-free Carrot Cake into cupcakes and they were a huge hit with the crowd. So delicious!

She also provided little bite-sized cheesecakes also from Sam’s. Again, so delicious and huge cute factor when displayed on white pedestals.

Our dessert table was amazing if I do say so myself. It was delicious and super appealing to the eyes and stomach!

If you are wanting to keep your party simple, might I suggest just doing a dessert table? Plan it at a time when people are not expecting a meal (like 3:00 in the afternoon) and go to town with desserts!

Tips:

  • Don’t be afraid of using store-bought items! The cheesecakes and macarons were so well received!
  • Dress up store-bought brownie bites to make them super special like we did –custom brownie bites!
  • Using homemade frosting on cake mix cupcakes is a great way to make easy, delicious cupcakes.
  • Keep color scheme for platters and pedestals simple! Stick with one or two colors. Keeping ours white or glass with no patterns allowed the desserts and centerpiece flowers to shine!

Graduation Beverage Table

We had 2 dispensers, one filled with lemonade and one filled with ice water.

We put sliced lemons in the lemonade to make it pretty, and sliced fruit in the water for extra flavor and a special visual touch.

Simple confetti on the table, a flower arrangement, and clear plastic cups made for a pretty beverage table

Tips:

  • Just say no to brightly colored cups, unless they match your color scheme.
  • Keep beverages simple. No need to have 10 different choices.
  • Floating fruit is a super inexpensive and easy touch that adds instant beauty and flavor to beverages.

Graduation Party Decorations

This was another thing that we kept simple. Potted flowers on tables outside were heavy enough to not tip or blow away and could be given away as gifts after the party.

Arranged flowers indoors made for beautiful natural beauty indoors.

The flowers and greenery were from Trader Joes and they were gorgeous! My sister-in-law and niece did a great job arranging the flowers.

We all brought whatever glass or white vases we had from home, and had plenty between the 3 of us.

We had gold confetti, a gold sequined “HOORAY” banner hanging over a mantle in the dining room, and a “CELEBRATE” gold banner to greet the guests as they walked into the main room.

My sister-in-law found a fun chalkboard arrow sign that happened to have 3 arrows to write the 3 graduates names. It was stuck in a pot on the front patio to greet the guests as they arrived.

Outside we hung round white paper globe lanterns (borrowed from a friend and sister) from a tree which made quite a statement and the perfect backdrop for a simple but elegant photo booth.

Tips:

  • Figure out a color scheme. Keep it simple with only 2-3 colors. You don’t have to use school colors if they are not your favorite! We had 3 graduates from 2 different schools and they didn’t love their school colors, so we didn’t focus on that.
  • Borrow items from friends. Look through party decorations you already have. Our ‘congrats’ sign and ‘celebrate’ sign were not specific for graduation parties. Our paper lanterns were borrowed.
  • Do not be pulled in by all the different graduation decor you can find at party supply stores and online. Oftentimes it can look cheap, cheesy and just too much. Find decor that is tasteful, classic, and that you can use again in a different party setting.

Graduation Party Photo Booth

If you search Pinterest, you can find all kinds of ideas for photo booths. It can be as simple as hanging twists of crepe streamers with washi tape, or much more elaborate.

The most important thing to think about with a photo booth is lighting. Natural light is best. If indoors, by a window. If outdoors, somewhere protected and even shaded, as the sun can give harsh shadows on the face.

The second most important thing to think about is what is going to fit in the frame of a camera.

The whole purpose of a photo booth is to provide fun, special photos, and memories, so the background should add to that, not distract.

We used nature and the simple beauty of paper globes as our graduation party photo booth.

My daughter’s boyfriend and my brother-in-law were super helpful and climbed ladders to help hang the globes the morning of the party.

We placed a shabby chic bench that Grandma already had sitting in her yard in front of a tree, and voila! A photo booth.

Tips:

  • Grab your phone and look into the lens for a photo…see what shows up in the frame and that is the area you want to decorate.
  • Most young people are sharing photos on SnapChat or Instagram, so square or vertical images are the ones that you want to think about and allow room for.
  • Lighting is key. Natural light is best! No harsh overhead sunlight, unless you want all of your guests to have shadows under their eyes!

Tables & Chairs for Graduation Party Guests

We were able to get tables from the organization that my husband Todd works for. We brought in 3 rectangular tables for the grad tables, and 5 round tables for guest seating.

Grandpa has a truck so my Todd and Teagan picked the tables up the evening before the party and we stored them overnight in the garage.

We set up the 3 grad tables indoors the day before, so we could focus on the outdoors the day of the party.

My mom-in-law had a small fold-out table for beverages and we used her two dining tables, one for the burrito bowl buffet and one for dessert.

We rented white linens for the tables for $6/cloth. It was well worth it! You simply pick them up and they are pressed and ready to spread. After the party, we simply gathered them into the provided cloth laundry bag and dropped them back off. So convenient!

We also rented chairs. We decided to pay a little more and chose white wooden folding chairs over white plastic folding chairs. It was a nice touch and didn’t cost a whole lot more.

My nephews helped set up the chairs. They brought Grandpa’s loaded truck right up on the lawn to unload which made me smile. This was for sure a family joint effort!

Tips:

  • Borrow as much as possible and use what you have on hand. We borrowed tables and Grandpa’s truck, paper globe lanterns, Grandma’s folding table and well…her whole house!
  • Use your local party rental stores. Rent chairs and linens. Search online around at different sites for the best price. We saved $.50 a chair by comparing prices, which adds up when you rent a bunch of chairs!
  • Know when to save money and when to spend a bit more. This all depends on what is important to you and your budget. Comfortable, classy seating for our guest was important to us, so we went with more sturdy wooden chairs.

Parking for Graduation Party Guests

This is another area where my nephews came in so handy!

They were our official parking attendants, on scooters to boot! Grandpa and Grandma live off of a two-lane dirt road, so parking had to be on their property.

They have a lot of land and a nice long, winding driveway with 2 parking lot areas, so as long as people parked in an organized way, there was enough space.

This is where my nephews on scooters came in. They directed people to exactly where they needed to go, and made me grin from ear to ear as they did it!

Tips:

  • Think about parking ahead of time and do your best to accommodate your guests.
  • Ask family members to help. Many hands make for a successful graduation party!

Paper Products

This is another area we tried to keep as simple as possible.

Clear cups for beverages. White plastic forks. White disposable bowls that were not too big but not too small.

We tried to stay away from styrofoam and set out a recycling bin for the plastic.

Napkins are one area we decided not to go with plain white. We knew it would be an easy way to add beauty to the tables and a bit of style.

We found some fun grey napkins with gold- foil confetti shapes on them at Target.

They added a hint of style and shine but were still neutral enough to let the color of the flowers arrangements pop instead of competing with them.

Tips:

  • There are many paper plates in stores that have patterns and colors but we purposefully stayed away from them. Instead of bringing visual busyness with the cups, bowls, and forks, we wanted them to blend and almost go away visually.
  • Use tasteful napkin design to bring in a pop of color and style.

Accommodating Families and Children

This is another area where my in-laws home made it so easy for us!

They have a wonderful backyard with a playground area for kids, a large grass area for kids to run around, and swings that appeal to the kid in everyone!

They also have a toy room in the basement that my little niece and nephews took full advantage of.

Tips:

  • Think about those with young ones. Simply providing a table and chairs will help them unload their plates and feed their littles.
  • If outdoors, have games like Cornhole sitting out for kids of all ages to play.

How Many Guests at Your Graduation Party

It was so hard to figure out how many people would show up at the party. It seems like it is a guessing game, and really it sort of is!

When I met with my sister-in-laws one evening at our local coffee shop, this was the first thing we tackled.

We started with writing down family members we would invite. Obviously, we had a lot of them in common so we were able to condense our lists.

We then wrote down family friends we thought would come and saw that we had many of those in common too.

The last step in estimating how many guests to plan for was to check out our kids’ Facebook invite. This is how they invited many of their school friends, and it was helpful to see the number of ‘accepted’ invites there were.

Even in doing all of this, it was still a bit of a guessing game. We overestimated a bit on the food numbers, but much of the food was returnable as were the paper products.

Tips:

  • Don’t open all of the paper products at once. You may not need all of them and will be able to return some.
  • Create a Facebook event page to invite friends and family. This is one great avenue to get a feel for who can make it.
  • Remember that people often have multiple graduation parties to go to, so buy smaller serving bowls and plates. They will eat less than you might think.
  • Be mindful when buying food that non-refrigerated food with long shelf life is returnable. We were able to return pantry stable jars of salsa and unopened bags of tortilla chips.

Enjoy The Graduation Party

After all the work of planning the party, do your best to enjoy it! I was overwhelmed with the feeling of gratitude I felt when I saw who came to support our girl.

There is nothing like other people loving on, investing in and showing up for your kid. It was a beautiful feeling.

I was taken by surprise by how much I was drawn into just talking to those who came to support my girl, and I’m so very thankful for my Mother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law, and my Sister-in-Law’s Mother who all kept the food, beverage and dessert table running and filled up.

I was not able to do it myself, so it was such a meaningful gift to watch them step in and surround us with support by serving!

Tips:

  • take in the moments, they are fleeting
  • enjoy watching your graduate engage those who came to love and support them, and join in!
  • arrange people to help with refilling the food tables so you are free to greet your guests.

I hope these tips are helpful and give some direction and vision if you find yourself planning a graduation party or a party and this large in scale.

Let me know if you have ever thrown a grad party or if these tips are helpful to you!

Cancer Diagnosis – A Reason for a Circle of Support

Every person who has been diagnosed with cancer knows exactly where they were when they heard the words “you have cancer.” These 3 little words are so powerful that knees get weak and the wind is knocked right out of you. You lose your breath, your heart pounds, and all of a sudden your whole world becomes a fight to keep breathing.

I’ve heard these words twice in my life.

The first time, I was a young 22-year-old cosmetologist working at a hair salon. I was blow drying my favorite client and was called away for a phone call. It was my dermatologist with biopsy results from a freckle on my stomach that had turned darker and darker. I answered the phone and he said, “I’m sorry to tell you: it tested positive for melanoma. Please make an appointment to come see me right away.”

I had read enough to know that back in 1998, melanoma was very deadly if it was advanced enough to get into the bloodstream. I went back to drying my client’s hair, hoping the dryer was loud enough to block out the sound of my pounding heart. I didn’t tell her the words I had just heard, even though she was my favorite. I needed a moment to take it all in. I needed a moment to breathe.

The second time I heard the words “you have cancer,” I was 34 years old, a wife and a mom of 3 beautiful girls. It felt different: more serious. My doctor called. This time I was at home in my bedroom, my 3 girls and their friends playing downstairs. I wrote about the call in my journal:

The doctor comes on the phone, voice low and serious.

“Amy, I’m sorry to have to tell you that you have invasive ductal carcinoma.”

Silence . . . my breath taken, but my heart beating louder and faster.

“Do you understand what I am saying? That means you have breast cancer.”

I find myself in my closet, the phone still attached to my ear. I am having to concentrate on my breath, and I say the word “OK” 3 times. It is the only thing I can think of to say. My knees feel weird. Is this what they mean by “weak in the knees”?

With the words “you have cancer,” life instantly becomes overwhelming and everything feels different. Life feels out of control. Appointments, doctors, scans, medications, surgeries and staying alive become your new normal. There is a lost sense of stability, and you are faced with your mortality. Your entire life becomes about living, and you fight to just breathe and stay alive.

The Importance of Having a Circle of Support

This is a fight that must not be done alone. Some of the most beautiful life moments can happen in this unwanted new normal, and they often involve others.

In my fight, I challenged my 3 young girls to look for treasures in the midst of the hard. We had to find ourselves thankful even when life was spiraling. I knew this would make this new journey bearable, but I don’t think I realized just how much it would change it and not just make it bearable, but beautiful.

Treasures came from above through our circle of support.

We are made for relationships. We are made to give love and receive love. People fighting cancer find themselves doing a lot of the receiving, and that is okay. The key is being willing to. It can be an adjustment if you are used to being the one giving, but, oh, the beauty of receiving love! If you are a cancer fighter, learn how to receive.

My circle of support came around me and taught me so much. I’ve had a front row seat for an extended time to see how it is done. Receiving love and support from others changed my journey and made it a precious one. I now know how to better give support and love others because of how others supported me.

There are treasures to be found even in cancer, in the giving and receiving of love the most beautiful circle is formed. A circle of support.

An Easy Way to Reach Out and Form Your Circle of Support

You can form a circle of support through the LivingWith™ app. This app is part of Pfizer’s This is Living with Cancer™ initiative designed to help people manage their lives with cancer and stay connected to their communities. The mobile app is designed to help manage some of the daily challenges faced by people living with cancer and organize certain important information in one place.

I sure wish it was around at the time of my cancer treatment and fight. It would have been helpful to have all of my information in one place.

How My Loved Ones Supported Me During My Breast Cancer Treatment

Despite not having the app, I still had amazing support.

If you are a cancer fighter, I hope the following stories give you ideas on how to answer your loved ones when they ask “What can I do?” If you are part of a cancer fighter’s circle of support, I hope my stories give you some great ideas of how you can support your loved one.

FLOWERS
I had 7 surgeries in 3 years, and my recovery room at the hospital or at home was always brightened by flowers. A favorite I remember was an orchid from my sister-in-law. I also remember a simple sweet violet plant. My husband’s workplace sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers with a grocery store gift card attached to it. I loved all of them. You can never go wrong with flowers!

HANDMADE ART
A teacher who taught young people at our church gathered their homemade art and get-well notes and delivered them to me. Teens from the non-profit organization that my husband worked for took the time to write letters and sent them to me. These 2 art deliveries touched my heart so much!

Another amazing piece of art I received was drawn by my teenage nephew and delivered to my hospital room. It was a sketch of a warrior, and he said it was me. That image and his love helped me find my courage. It is to this day a treasured gift.

FUN FOR THE KIDS
My girls were 10-, 9- and 7-year-old. Seeing their mom fight cancer was hard on them, but they sure loved getting spoiled and were so well loved. One of their favorite memories was getting to go to an indoor water park called CoCo Keys. This was such a generous, thoughtful gift from a sweet friend.

KID DATES
My father-in-law would come on a Saturday, pick my girls up and take them to a movie. I tried so hard to be awake and ‘up’ while my girls were home, so having them gone for a few hours gave me permission to relax the tough girl exterior that I kept while my girls were around and take a nap. They remember those special Grandpa dates to this day.

COMFORT ITEMS
A reader of this blog sent me a homemade lap quilt. I could not get over the sweet generosity and the time I know she took to make it. I took it everywhere and it got lots of attention in the chemo room. It was a perfect size and so very beautiful. I felt so covered in love.

Another reader crocheted hats for my cold noggin. A friend knitted 3 hats for my girls and one for me too, we were all pretty cute in our lovely handmade hats!

OFFER TO TAKE NOTES AT DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS
I have a dear friend who I knew was wired to be resolute and could keep her emotions in check even when hearing hard things. She is so loving but also tough.

She is the one I asked to come with us to our first oncology appointment. My anxiety was so strong that I had to ask for a bag while we sat in the waiting room just in case I got sick. This was before knowing if cancer had spread, and the unknown was getting the best of me.

My husband and I needed someone to focus and take notes on the hard things that were said while our minds swirled, and her strong presence was what we needed.

HELP WITH OVERWHELMING PROJECTS
I remember while healing that the simple act of putting my Christmas decorations away was so overwhelming. I remember my sister and mom packing it all away for me as I sat in my jammies on our couch, so relieved when all the boxes were finally put away.

A sweet group of women offered to come and help me organize and add planters to beautify our front yard for spring. I still have those planters sitting out by our front steps, all these years later, a reminder of love every time I come home.

PACKAGES IN THE MAIL
So many sweet packages from loved ones, but as a mom, I especially loved the packages that came for my girls. I so enjoyed seeing my worried girls delight in things. It was healing for us all. One package I vividly remember came from a loving aunt and had teddy bears and candy for my girls.

So many cards were sent and I kept all of them. One from my aunt and uncle had some money tucked inside for groceries.

HOUSE CLEANING
Oh goodness, what a gift. My sisters often would come and fold laundry and clean while I slept. My mother-in-law arranged for ongoing house cleaning while I was in treatment. The woman who came regularly to clean my home ended up becoming a mentor to me—talk about a full circle of support and a treasure from cancer! I have such sweet memories of being in her home and soaking in her wisdom.

——

There are many more examples I could give, specifically in the area of FOOD and PRESENCE—both were huge for creating a circle of support around me. Notice I said presence, not presents. Both are great but the former is so, so important.

I will talk about these 2 things extensively and share more stories in an upcoming post!

So what about you?

  • Do you have stories of your own circle of support?
  • Do you have a loved one that you are surrounding with support right now? If so, send them this post and tell them about the app!
  • What are specific ways or ideas you have for showing support?

A Simple Way To Boost Mood

A pen, paper and a resoluteness to find my thankful. This is the most simple way I have found to boost my mood.

I know, I know. You have heard it before, it is nothing new — make a list of things you are thankful for and it could change you. It has even been studied. It may seem simple. but sometimes the most simple solution can be the most profound.

Even in my hardest days of cancer and chemo, even in my darkest days of anxiety, choosing to find something to be thankful for and deliberately writing my finds in list form changed me and helped get me through.

Weekly Update

It is spring break! I’m excited to spend some extra time with my 3 girls this week. My freshman Avery made JV soccer team at school and has at practice every morning at 7:30, so no sleeping in or break from rides to school for her or me!

{there she goes!}

This week my work focus is writing content, so it really works out great! I can sit in a coffee shop (which I am doing right now) and have 1 1/2 hours of focused work time while she is at practice. It is much less time than I normally spend but at least it is something!

I’ve been batching my processes and creating systems to get my work done most efficiently as this site grows. It has been working so well.

My Work Focus Goals By Week:

Week 1 — social media

Week 2 –my home/homemaking

Week 3 –content creation/writing

Week 4 — backend of the site/admin work/pitch writing

Week 5 — photo taking /photo editing

I still do bits of everything every week, but it sure is profitable and free-ing to zero in on one main thing each week. It helps my brain know what to focus on.

Instead of wearing all the hats all the time, it gives me permission to put on one hat at a time and even tells me which hat it should be each week. I love it. No wonder hats are coming back into style.

Did you notice my home is a part of my “work?’  I often work from home, so it directly affects my work! Plus it is and always will be my priority as it is the place where the people I love gather.  I want them to have a soft place to land after being out in this often hard world.

I have to admit, my favorite focused week so far has been when I gave myself permission to focus in on my home!

Did you read my recent post about Everyday Home Goal Systems? I use these systems weekly whether it is the week I am to focus in on my home or not. They keep my home running smoothly when I use them faithfully.

What about you? Could this mindset work for you and the work you need to accomplish? Have you ever tried batching or using systems to accomplish your goals?

Favorite Things That Help Me Reach My Goals

Turmeric Supreme Supplement

I started taking turmeric regularly for joint pain that is caused by a cancer medication that I take. If I miss even one day my joints are inflamed by the next morning.

I know the minute my foot hits the ground (because I can feel every joint aching joint in my foot) that I forgot to take my turmeric. Needless to say, I rarely forget!

I really don’t know what I would do without the discovery of the amazing anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric! There are so many other benefits of this powerful root. I will write a post about it soon.

Calm Magnesium Supplement

Another supplement I take every day is called Calm. It is a powdered magnesium that you stir into water. It tastes refreshing and I truly feel the calming benefits of it.

I notice that I am a bit more uptight on days I don’t take it, and it really helps keep my anxiety in check.

Magnesium is also great for digestion issues and keeps everything working as it should in that area. That is all I will say about that. 🙂

FAMILY/ Leaving A Legacy

Blogging Then and Now + Blogging as a Business

Blogging Then & Now Plus: Blogging As A Business

When I tell people what my job is, the first question they ask is “how do you make money blogging?” I thought it would be fun to write a post explaining some of the ways this blog provides income for our family, and talk about how blogging has changed over the years.

Blogging Then and Now

The world of blogging has changed so much in the past 10 years. When I first started blogging in 2009, there were very few people actually making a living by writing blogs, and many people instead used it as an online journal of sorts.

When I first started, social media was just beginning to go mainstream–now I can’t imagine NOT having social media, as it is one of the key ways to market a blog.

I started blogging as a fun, easy, creative way to share recipes with friends and family and also show the crafty things I was doing with my 3 girls. It is so funny to look back and read my writing, see my typos and dark, unedited images.

I never dreamed when I started that I would end up connecting with so many people and help support our family financially in the process!

How Technology is Helping Me Reach My Wellness Goals in 2018

Thank you Nokia for sponsoring this post. Visit the Nokia Body+ site for more info and start the new year off right!

I am constantly looking for ways to integrate health and technology into my daily rhythms.  I want the pursuit of health and wellness to become second nature to me. I’ve found that using technology is a great way to create healthy habits that stick!

I am a 2-time cancer survivor, and I have shared several ways I pursue continued health, but I have not told you how simple technology makes it possible for me to move forward toward my health goals.

One of my goals is to create seamless daily systems that are as natural to me as brushing my teeth. Things I do without much thought; decisions so second nature that I make them automatically.

It might sound too good to be true, but this is where technology comes in. Technology keeps it simple, makes it possible and keeps it fun.

Using Technology To Reach Wellness Goals

Energy to pursue wellness goals is often dependent on a good night sleep. Good sleep is important for good health!

I read right before bed. Reading every day is good for the mind and soul!  I’m amazed that thanks to technology, I can have my whole library at my fingertips on my Kindle Fire tablet.  I make sure it is set on Blue Shade, as this blocks blue light which makes it easier to fall asleep after nighttime screen reading.

I also use my Kindle Fire to set my alarm to wake up in the morning. I love this alarm because when I set it, it tells me (in hours and minutes) exactly how many hours and minutes I have before the alarm will go off. I like the automatic awareness of how many hours of sleep I’m getting each night. I aim for 7 hours of sleep and most nights reach that goal.

When I wake up I do a quick morning yoga flow to get my joints working and blood flowing. I use the Yoga Studio App on my iPhone, or sometimes I grab my laptop and find great ‘good morning’ asanas on YouTube.

I then fill my water bottle with crushed ice with the press of a button–the technology of our refrigerator has been key to get me to drink my water each day. I am a crushed ice lover! My goal is to fill my 24 oz water bottle at least twice a day.

I then quickly set my Instant Pot up, and with another few pushes of buttons, make One-Minute Quinoa. This has been my go-to favorite breakfast for a while now, as it is so satisfying and full of great plant protein. Read about 3 of my favorite ways to eat quinoa for breakfast here.

I grab my cup of coffee that has been brewed automatically for me. I have learned to drink it black in the morning which steers me clear of starting the day out with sugar-laden creamers. Speaking of coffee, have you seen the new intelligent coffee mugs at Starbucks? They use technology to keep your coffee at the perfect temperature. I drool…and digress.

I then take my coffee up to my favorite nesting chair in my bedroom, and this is where technology really comes into play for me.

Using Technology for Emotional Health

I’m going to be dramatic here and say I do not know where my emotional health would be without technology. There are so many apps on my phone that are part of my daily routine that keeps my heart, mind, and soul healthy.

After I make my coffee I sit, sip and open up a Prayer App where I can keep track of my own requests (and those of my loved ones) every morning. I also use an app called Calm to meditate for about 10 minutes and then open up the Bible App — which has been life transforming.  I use Notes on my iPhone to keep track of all my daily affirmations and favorite Scriptures, and sometimes use them as prompts to journal my 3 pages a day.

These routines are a part of my everyday morning routine, and I feel “off” all day if I don’t wake up early enough to do them! They are all ways I reach my emotional health goals.

Using Technology for Physical Health

I continue to use technology as I get ready for my day. I step on my Nokia Body+ smart scale and take note of all the information it gives me in just those few seconds of standing on it. It gives the most accurate body composition readings, measuring weight trends, BMI, fat mass, muscle mass, water and bone mass–it even lets me know the weather! I love this thing.

The Nokia Body+ is amazing and beautiful–it comes in white or black and has a sleek, simple, timeless design. This is one scale I do not mind leaving out for all to see.

I use the Health Mate App that sinks automatically with Body+ and provides encouragement and tips on how to best achieve goals. It is so handy and convenient. Automatic syncing is my new crush and any smart item I buy that does this for me is always a fav.

The Health Mate App has the ability to sync with other apps (like one of my favorites that my doctor recommended–the My Fitness Pal App) and lets you view a complete history of your health data, including sleep, activity, weight and more. You can track progress and see your improvement over time. I love being able to check out my health stats at any time using my phone. Usually, for me, it is when I’m lying in bed at the end of the day.

Keeping track of my weight and health stats is super important as a cancer survivor. It is also important (as one that takes 2 medications: one to keep cancer away and one for generalized anxiety) that I keep an eye on my weight. Both medications can cause weight gain, which is not fun, but I feel that both have saved my life in their unique way, so I am very thankful for them.

Keeping an eye on my weight is something my Oncologist tells me to do regularly and she wants me to report any sudden weight changes. It can be a sign that something is off. The stage of cancer I had gives me a high chance of recurrence, so we keep a close eye on these things! I love having a scale that is easy to use daily, has such high accuracy, is so detailed and reliable. It can also track up to 8 users which makes it very family friendly.

Technology For a Healthy Flow to My Day

After stepping off my Nokia Body+ scale (weighing at the same time daily is recommended) I then get ready for my day. Technology helps me here, too. I use wireless headphones that connect by Bluetooth to my phone and allow me to listen to podcasts while I put on my makeup and do my hair.

I used to dread this part of my day, but now I look forward to it because I feel productive while I am getting ready. If I’m not listening to a podcast or music, I will hit record on my Voxer App and talk to my dearest friends, walkie-talkie style, leaving my heart and soul recorded right there on the app for them to listen to whenever they have time. Connection with loved ones, especially when they are across the miles, is so good for my health!

By this time my morning routine is almost over, and I glance at my 30/30 App to see the morning routine I set up for myself there. I look through the things I have already accomplished and glance at what else needs to be done.

The app has shown me how technology really is helping me reach my daily wellness goals in an almost automatic way. Most of the morning routines that I’ve listed in the app, I now do without even needing to look at the app. They are all habits that bring a healthy flow to my day and help me reach my goals.

Wellness is holistic, and an organized flow to the day with systems and routines put into place make me feel productive but peaceful at the same time. Integrating technology has been a key player when it comes pursuing my health goals, and I hope I gave you some good ideas and inspiration for using technology to reach your goals, too!

Anti-Procrastination Weekly Update and Goals

Weekly Update

I cannot believe it is the middle of February! I chuckle at the ‘weekly’ word…it has been a month since my last ‘weekly’ update.

This month swooped in and I already found myself needing to revisit my New Year’s goals and embrace slow once again.

February came in with a bang and along with it a busted pipe. The main sewage pipe in our home. Frozen and cracked, it wreaked a bit of havoc on our home. Carpet is torn up, walls cut down, but the pipe is fixed! A great reminder of what a gift running water is, and what is and is not an emergency in this life. This was not. We have the option to fix it. We have running water once again. I am thankful.

I recently decorated for our yearly IF: Gathering and it was much fun, but lots of thought and work. It was a wonderful weekend–you can see glimpses of it on my Instagram. Have you heard of IF or participated in your city?

My Todd had a birthday February 5th but we have yet to celebrate it. We had family plans but needed to cancel them. Evidence of a hard, hard-working season for him, and that we are all trying to figure out the best way to live this life and all it can throw at us.

Valentines Day came with it a reminder: all that matters is love. It forced me into contemplating love and this family of mine.

I had to just take a breath, buckle down and figure out once again how to slow down and love well. Time is passing and I have been too busy doing lots of loving and lovely things but missing out a bit on my Love’s at home.

My Teagan is a senior, ain’t nobody got time for missing out on time! I reevaluate where I’m spending it and how. I make choices where and when I have the power to. Deliberateness matters.

The above letterboard that is in our home reminds me what must be most important to me during this season. My home, my people in my home, and the allowing of God’s glory to infiltrate our lives.

Figuring out what this looks like right now has taken long Voxers to my sister and my dearest friends as I try to decide what are my best ‘yesses’ and my best ‘no’s, and how to make the best of fast, hard seasons.

It is so hard to slow and say no to great things to say yes to the greatest of things. This matters, even if it means postponing my own dreams to help those I love to chase theirs.

I so don’t have it figured out but it is good to sometimes just put the breaks on and make tough decisions with time, so that it doesn’t pass me by.
