How A Sip Of Soda Impacts Your Health

how-soft-drinks-impact-your-health_50290aa3cdcba_h750.png

I’m a visual person, so when this came up in my Facebook feed, it caught my eye.  We all know soda is bad for you, but this image helped me understand why it is bad.

I was at the pool with my kids when I first saw this, and they asked for a pop, and this image was enough for me to say NO!  I gave them ice water, they gulped it up & jumped back into the pool.

If your reaction is “but it TASTES good” and you are one that loves fizz, then try this recipe:

Fresh Lime Soda

This recipe is easy, and will not spike your blood sugar!  Even my kids love it.

My Favorite Pre-shave & Post-Shave for the Softest Legs

I used to have bumps and large pores & irritation on my legs, and I just thought I had sensitive skin and was stuck with it.   Well, I was half right.  My skin IS sensitive to all the irritants I was using from my shaving cream, soap, & those fun scented & colored body lotions, but I’m NOT stuck with it.

I’m so happy with the solution I have found.   I want to avoid parabens and all the different ingredients in so many beauty products, but I also am on a mission to simplify my beauty routine and the cost of all my beauty supplies.

My answer to ALL of these issues?  Coconut Oil.

I love coconut oil so very much.  It is a unique oil, solid when cool and liquid when room temperature or warmer.  It does not need refrigerated.

It is

~anti-inflammatory
~anti-microbial
~anti-fungal

Caprylic Acid, Capric Acid and Lauric Acid are the essential saturated fatty acids that are powerful ingredients in coconut oil. I love having an organic, natural product with such great benefits to it.  It has the slight scent of coconut, but not overpowering at all.

I have been using coconut oil as a pre-shave oil this summer, in place of shaving cream or soap, and I can’t tell you how great my legs feel.  Gone are any bumps or irritation.  My pores are small and my skin has a healthy glow to it.  I just love it.

I keep my jar of organic coconut oil in the shower, and not only use it as a pre-shaving lotion, but also as a quick after- shave oil.  At the end of my shower, when I turn off the water, I slather the oil all over my whole body.  I find it is a bit too heavy for my face, so I skip the face, but I’ve heard people rave about it as a face moisturizer.  I keep a jar in my gym bag, and use it as a body lotion/moisturizer, too!

{ a closeup of my calf-small pores, no ingrown hair}

As I dry off, my legs are amazingly soft and smooth.  I don’t have to put on any lotion after my showers, and rumor has it that coconut oil has an spf of 4, so it gives some natural sun protection, too!

An added benefit?  It is on my hands as I go to squeeze the water out of my hair, and I have found it acts as a great hair de-frizzer.  I can now air dry my curls and they are soft and amazing with no frizz!  There is very little oil on my hands, so this benefit does not take much coconut oil.  Bonus!

{See?  No bumps…and no photo editing, I promise!}

Between using coconut oil as a pre & post shave, occasionally using my Homemade Coconut Lime Sugar Scrub, and dry brushing before my shower, my skin is the softest and healthiest it has been in a years.

Try it and tell me what you think!

Welcome To The “New” New Nostalgia!

wife | mother | blogger | cancer fighter | hair stylist | homemaker | lover of beauty | lover of God

~ my quest to be present in each moment,
learning from yesterday and living simply in the NEW!

Welcome to the New, New Nostalgia!

Along with a new blog design, comes a new tagline.  Before, it was “My quest to recapture the simplicity of yesterday and apply it to today.” Well, that just does not cut it anymore.  I still love simplicity, but I am no longer on a quest for it.

Instead, I am on a quest to LIVE!

To apply what I have learned from the past and remember that I have been made NEW!

How to live new on a daily basis, in all those little moments that add up and create a simple and meaningful LIFE.

Yes, living simply is part of that, but only a piece.

Cancer has changed me.

I am a completely different person than I used to be.

I am finding that what is important to me now,
and how I want to spend my energy and time is different than before.

Much of that energy and many of my posts will be on how I pursue health in every way:
 spiritually, emotionally, mentally & physically.

Because my focus is different than before, there has been change to my writing.  My posts are deeper, and at times, heavier.  But at other times, a silly lightness has also come with the awareness that life on this earth is short. I will share the small, simple things that bring joy and make up life– the tidbits that I want recorded for the future. Pretty much what I have always done, just tweaked a little.

Bear with me, as I will also share updates of my medical journey and posts that leave my heart and soul bare at times.

Come with me as I take advantage of this new outlook, striving for the simple life which allows one to be present in the moments, knowing that we never know how many of those precious moments we have left.

Before I move on to the more specific posts that make up New Nostalgia, I must introduce you to someone who has helped make New Nostalgia what it now is.

Robyn
New Nostalgia Ad Coordinator & Chief Coder

Robyn from She Makes Media & She Makes Hats is someone who has been such a gift to me and to pretty much every one else that meets her.  She writes about her goal of giving away 10,000 hats in her lifetime at She Makes Hats, and also uses her expertise at She Makes Media, in blog design and coding. Without her, this new design would not exist, she has been an absolute joy to have by my side. Get to know Robyn, as I will be mentioning her from time to time, for really her presence is all over my life and this site!

The Best Of New Nostalgia:

My husband of 16 years, Todd.

Todd is a regular contributor.  He writes the series, Purposeful Living.  He is a man who not only writes about living purposefully, but lives it out every day.  How did I get so lucky?

My 3 girls, age 13, 11 & 9

You will see them pop up from time to time.  They are my lovelies.  They are my heart.  They bring so much joy to the moments that at times I think I could burst!

HEALTHY EATING 2
Recipes
I try hard to use ingredients that have been around awhile, before processed “food” came about. Simple and healthful is my goal.  You will see a shift in my recipes, as I have embraced an 80% plant based diet.  I no longer eat meat, but I still make it occasionally for my family, so there will see recipes of all types here at New Nostalgia

Organize & Simplify
Organizing and Simplifying seem to be on everyones mind.  In our house, routines and charts are key! I chuckle to myself when writing this one, if you could only see the state of my house right now!

CANCER JOURNEY 2
Cancer
Diagnosed August 2010 with Stage 3b Invasive Lobular Carcinoma, I coped by writing honestly and candidly, and my readers buckled down and were by my side through the whole ride.  Here is a taste of some of those posts.  For me, the most precious is seeing the comments from all of you under each of these posts. Amazing support and love.  For more, see my ‘Cancer Journey’ & ‘Caring Bridge’ category buttons in my sidebar.

BEAUTY 2
Beauty
I am a hairstylist turned full time homemaker / blogger, so the creative in me loves to find beauty in everything.  I like to explore beauty, without spending a fortune doing it.

Family
Oh, to have this one figured out.  I love being a mom.  I do my best, but have much to learn!  My prayer is that I will never stop growing as I explore this thing called motherhood.  I post as I go, sharing the things I discover that help me in this amazing job called “mom.”
healthy living 2
Health
I’ve always tried to embrace a healthy lifestyle, but got super serious about it after diagnosis.  Here are a few ways I have embraced a more healthy lifestyle.

crafts 2
Crafts
Again, I love to create, and so do my 3 girls (age 12, 11 & 9).
Here are some of the things we have done together.

homemaking 2
Homemaking
A job I take very seriously.  We have such power as moms to create an environment to (as my joy post said) hurt or heal.  I desire home to be a place where my family can come and be fully who they are, and to heal from what life brings. This, to me, makes home environment so important!
spiritual 2
Spirituality
It is THE thread that holds all of who I am together, it affects all that I do, because He IS.

It is a once a week place where you and I can get things done together!
I would love to have you link up or leave a comment!

If you would like to receive new posts from New Nostalgia in your inbox, or if you would like to subscribe to New Nostalgia, there is a link for both in my sidebar.  For more information on subscribing, read this post.
