Perfect Iced Coffee

Now that the weather is warming up, I have been splurging and buying iced coffee from my local coffee shop. This last time I went, I paid attention to how they made it, and as I watched him removed a bottle of cold coffee concentrate from the refrigerator and add some milk and ice to it, I was reminded of a post I had read at Small Notebook on making iced coffee the cold brewed way.  I paid almost $4.00 for my iced coffee, and walked out of there determined to figure out how to make some at home.

The Cold Brew Method

The cold brew method is so easy, and you end up with a delicious drink that is less acidic, which is much more gentle on the stomach and goes down very smooth.  No bitterness, which means less sweetener is needed.

You won’t believe how easy this is to make, and it is so much cheaper that buying a cup at the coffee shop! The recipe below costs 50 cents per cup, and that is using good, organic coffee!

How To Make Iced Coffee Using The Cold Brew Method:

The cold brew method is simply soaking 1/4 cup of coffee grounds overnight in 1 cup of cold water. Let sit out on the counter overnight.  The next morning,  add another cup of cold water.  Then strain the grounds and pour over ice. This makes 2 cups of coffee.  I add a generous splash of vanilla almond milk and some sugar or stevia to taste.
If you like more milk, add less water.

I use a french press, but you could also just use a mason jar and a sieve or strain through a coffee filter twice.  The french press makes for a simple, easy process.  I love it!

Tips:
~You can keep any leftovers in the refrigerator for several days.
~I have read that adding sweetened condensed milk makes for a very special, rich and creamy dessert coffee.
~Freeze any leftovers in ice cube trays to use in your next iced coffee or to throw in the blender for a blended treat.
~Pour into Popsicle molds for a frosty treat on a hot day.
~Make your own flavored simple syrups, using these recipes.

My House Is Looking Bare

I have found myself in decluttering mode the last couple of months.  When I get a burst of energy, I take a drawer and clear it out.  I keep what I love and get rid of what I don’t.  It has been freeing, BUT, I am finding my house a bit too bare!

 Look at my empty bookshelf!  Easy to dust, but not very inviting and warm.  Honestly, the reason why everything looks so empty is because all my spring decor it tucked back in an attic closet.  In order to get to get into the closet, I have to walk through a craft/storage closet, and that was such a mess that I couldn’t even walk through it!  I can’t believe how bad it got over this last year, although, I have been a bit busy!;)
{see that little door?  that is the attic closet that I obviously can’t get to.}

{here is the after pic–for more, see this post}

These closet photos are from last year.  This last week, I finally got my craft closet cleaned out, so it looks like the above picture, again. Now I can get into the attic closet!  I opened the door to the attic closet, and then quickly shut it again.  There are so many Christmas decor storage bins in the way, I am not sure I can even get to my spring/summer decor bins! I was pretty out of it from my surgery last year after Christmas, so I didn’t take the time to get rid of my extra Christmas decor.  Ugh.  And, with new, healing incisions, I can’t move heavy things around–so I guess we are stuck with looking bare for a few more weeks!  Maybe I will head over to Becoming Minimalist, to make me feel better about my empty shelves and motivate me to get rid of some more of my stuff!!

My Favorite Way To Cut An Orange

Knife Cutting An Orange Into Slices
My kids think I am the only one on the planet that can cut an orange “properly.” I love that they think that. Their friends also tell me they love how I cut oranges. Then adults started telling me the same thing, which is when I started to believe there was something special about how I do it.

Hmmm…who woulda thunk it?

In this post I’ll show you my favorite way to cut an orange so you can see just how simple it is to get those picture perfect slices.

I had a friend send me a link this morning that was quite fitting for what we do here every Tuesday at Anti-Procrastination Tuesday.  It is a post at Fast Company via Lifehacker called “How To Keep Your Task List Healthy And Focused”  I thought it was great reading, and I’m super excited about the site it suggested called “Tuex Duex”  below is a video that tells all about it:

TeuxDeux Demo from TeuxDeux on Vimeo.

I’m gonna sign up asap!  It looks so easy to use–drag and drop, baby!!
I love to do lists!
Thanks, Mark, for the link.

Gardening

Time To Garden!

I started a Square Foot Garden last year and loved every minute of the process.  I am very eager to get out there and plant some seeds, its about that time!

I will be growing lots of herbs and greens this year.  I have been juicing vegetables for green drinks and it takes quite a bit of kale and spinach, so I will be growing both this year.

The following are posts from last year’s garden:

Do you garden?
What is your favorite type of vegetable to grow?
