“Marriage is Not a Destination, But Rather a Life Long Journey”

I’m so excited to introduce you to our new Monthly Contributor, Cassie from True Agape.  She is a newlywed with a passion to help couples through the early stages of marriage by “giving resources that help them embrace their spouses’ quirks, accept their spouses for who they are and love EVERY day of it!”

I have found that Cassie’s words of wisdom are not just for newlyweds.  I have been married 17 years and I find her words inspiring, motivating and full of truth.
You all, too, have shown that Cassie inspires you.  She links up to our Anti-Procrastination Tuesday and is often the winner of our “most clicked-on link.”
I love her message, and I’m so excited she will be here monthly to encourage us on in marriage & teach us what True Agape looks like.
Some of Cassie’s most informative posts have to do with learning the 5 Love Languages.  Did you  know we all speak different love languages and feel love and give love in specific ways?  I learned so much from reading the book and realized I was loving Todd in my own love language and not his.

An Imperfect Perfect Thanksgiving Day Pennant Banner

I am almost 2 weeks out from surgery, and I’m feeling pretty well!  I am sleeping great, off all pain relievers, and have just a bit of stiffness/soreness in my chest muscles and what used to be my right drain site. It is so great to feel good again.

Something I have learned from cancer and cancer treatment is how ridiculous perfection is.  I am a recovering-almost recovered- perfectionist.  Cancer takes the perfectionist tendency and really just steals it away.  That is one thing cancer has taken from me that I am more than willing to let it keep!  Nobody is perfect, and it is so freeing to just let go of needing and wanting things to be done just so.

This Thanksgiving Day Pennant Banner is just a small example of giving up perfection, and a great example of the rewards and sweetness letting go of perfection brings.

I was scrolling through my Thanksgiving Holiday Pinterest Board, and found this pin with the most beautiful Thanksgiving Pennant from View Along The Way. This was when I was still in a lot of pain from surgery, and knew there was no way I was able to make it, even though it is described as “easy.”  The old me would want it exactly how I saw in the picture.  Not so anymore, so I came up with a plan.

I have a very creative 10 year old Avery, who is always up for a challenge and loves to create.  I wanted a Give Thanks Pennant Banner for my living room/dining room, and I knew she would be the perfect person for the job.  I showed her the pin for inspiration, and told her to create one for me using whatever she wanted, as long as the colors were warm.  I told her to use any color that she would see in the leaves of fall trees.

I loved watching her gather her supplies.  She had pinking shears, markers, gold glitter, plain white paper, a book on how to make fancy letters, and some jute.  I knew I had picked the perfect person for the job.

The above banner is what she came up with.  I think it is the MOST perfect thanksgiving decoration in our home right now.  My heart melts every time I walk under it, and I’m so grateful I have learned to give up on perfection so I can experience what truly is perfect…my daughters sweet, creative love expressed in this beautiful pennant banner.

Suffering & A Health Update

Because of my faith, I long to suffer well.  Suffering well does not mean denying pain, for to suffer well means to suffer real.  Pain in this world is a reality, but I believe in a God who has come to overcome this world.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”  John 16:33

After a week of physical pain & suffering, those words mean so much more.  Thanks to all your prayers and a very good God, I did feel peace in suffering.  I had a few real moments, what I call “shaking my fists” type moments, but God gets that and hears my cries in those fist shaking times. Those moments happened when I tried to go back onto Tamoxifen (a hormone drug I take for cancer) and when I learned I would need a second surgery due to a defective expander.  Despite these times of struggle, I truly was overcome by the peace and even joy that I have felt the last week.
That is what God does.  He gives purpose to pain.  I want you to meet someone who I know who has been through so much pain in her lifetime, yet claims God’s purpose in her pain.

“Sexually, mentally, and physically abused, stage 3 breast cancer, homeless, divorced and a single mom are only a few of the challenges that Patti has faced.” Watch this incredible story.

How amazing is she?  Do you want more of Patti?

Her story is so inspirational.  She spurs me on to suffer well.  She is such a beautiful example to me and I am so grateful to know about Patti and her story!

I am doing great, my last surgery went really well and 2 days later I’m only taking Tylenol for pain.  I am slow and sore, but what a huge change from the first surgery.  Those nasty little red tubes were removed and also my left drain.  What a relief!

Pumpkin Patch, Fall Allergies, & Kleenex Pocket Packet

“This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Kleenex but all my opinions are my own. #KleenexAllergy #pmedia http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO

August, September & October are the months of the year where my family suffers the most with allergies, thanks to ragweed season! My husband and 2 of my daughters are all on prescription nose spray right now because of allergies, and honestly the spray works GREAT!  As much as I try to stay away from meds, I have been very thankful for this particular prescription, as it keeps my husband from sniffing constantly (sniffing is NOT sexy) and it keeps my youngest from asthma attacks.  Her allergies and post nasal drip is what causes her attacks, so as long as we can keep her allergies under control, she can breath & so can her Momma!

Even though allergies are pretty under control now in our household, I still think I can benefit from having Kleenex brand tissues in my home.  You all know I’m pretty frugal and if you are a close friend and have needed a facial tissue in my home, you often would get handed a roll of tp.  Granted, it would always be a nice new roll, but still…I’m too frugal to buy a bunch of facial tissue…unless:

1.) They are the cute little Wallet Packet or Pocket Packet from Kleenex. Kleenex brand is so soft, and I love the small packet sizes.  They are so convenient!

2.) My family is in the middle of allergy season or are sick.  This doesn’t happen too often so I smile when my girls get excited about soft Kleenex tissue for their noses. I know when I do have Kleenex tissues on hand it makes them feel loved and cared for.  If they get sick it is one of the first things I throw in my basket.

3.) When I have an awesome coupon like this one that I can use at Target, a store I frequent anyway, so an extra trip is not needed!   The coupon offer?  Buy 1 Kleenex 4 pack, get 1 free wallet pack (2-pk) or 1 pocket pack (3-pk) -bothe are $1.00 value.  This offer is good while supplies last, so click here for coupon.  Because of this offer, my friends are not going to get handed a roll of tp when they come to our home and need a tissue,  as I will be able to stock up Kleenex and get free pocket packs to boot!

The Pocket Packet came in very handy just this last weekend.  I took two of my girls to the pumpkin patch and they both ended up needing to use tissues.  Between sitting on bales of hay (allergen), the smoke from the pit fire, and all the dust in the air from people walking around on dirt paths, it didn’t take long for my girls to start sniffing.  Having Kleenex on hand helped make our day at the pumpkin patch one that was full of smiles and memories!

FAMILY/ Leaving A Legacy/ Spiritual

I Am A Scribe and it is Changing My Life

pen and journal

I have found a way of studying the Scriptures that has been changing me in profound ways.  I’m not sure how I stumbled upon it while searching through Amazon, but I did, and I believe God’s own hand led me right to this profound way of studying His words.

I stumbled upon the 17:18 series.  I was intrigued the minute I saw the words “Journible” & “Scribe.”

I know that I am not alone when it comes to learning much more deeply and retaining more knowledge when I write something out– kinesthetically–so the idea that there was a such a simple way to study Scripture that utilized this way of learning really excited me.

The Purpose of Journible –(taken from my book journible I Timothy-Hebrews)
Engagement:The Journible is a profoundly simple attempt to aid a person’s ability to engage the Word of God by slowing down the process of simply reading the test.  The book is organized so that the “scribe” can slowly and thoughtfully engage the text while leaving plenty of room to write comments and question about the text.
Legacy: Journibles provide a legacy to pass on from one generation to the next. The journible creates an opportunity for one generation to communicate in writing to the next generation their insights and personal application of the test.
How To Use:This book is organized so that the scribe (you) will hand write your very own copy of I Timothy-Hebrews. You will be writing the text of the Bible only on the right hand page of the book.  This should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left page of your open text to write your own notes and comments.  From time to time, a question or word will be lightly printed on the left page; these questions are to aide in further study, but should not interfere with your own notes and comments.  This means that you are encouraged to not only write your own “copy” of the Bible, but to also write your own notes concerning the text.

journal 17:18 series

I ordered the specific journal of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus Philemon & Hebrews.  I am just finishing 1 Timothy and can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed this process.  It is simply writing out 3-5 verses a day, and I love it.  My “chemo brain” {grin} is retaining it and I know it is changing me, my heart and my thought processes.

I especially love the “legacy” idea.  You all know as a 2 time cancer survivor I am keenly aware that life on this earth is short and can be cut short at anytime.  What better legacy can I leave then the written Word of God and what it taught my heart as I read it?  Gives me chills to think about what a simple way the 17:18 series has given me to do just that.
writing in a journal

I was not paid to write this, but if you are interested in becoming a scribe and getting your own 17:18 series Journible,  use this link to order and I will receive a small compensation for sharing the link.  Let me know in the comments if you did!  I’m excited to see how many people this appeals to.

Daughter Volleyball Update – Purposeful Living

Todd Bowman on purposeful living.

These posts written by Todd (Amy’s husband) are designed to model a system of purposeful living.  At least once a month, he spends time setting meaningful goals around one of seventeen core priorities.

If you missed it, consider reading the foundation post – Purposeful Living #1.

Correct Priority
Priority #5 – Children (Emotional Health)

Support my daughter Colsie in her desire to become a strong volleyball player and join a volleyball team.  Specific things I can do include the items listed below.

  • Research and purchase an effective youth volleyball instructional video.
  • Thoroughly review the video and develop a volleyball skill development program for Colsie.

UPDATED Thoughts About Goal – August 2013
After a bit of research, I found a fantastic volleyball training series.  This series is perfect for youth to learn foundational techniques.  If you have a youth volleyball player at home, these videos are listed below.

Championship Productions Foundations For Successful Volleyball

Championship Productions Foundations For Successful Volleyball: Setting DVD
Championship Productions Foundations For Successful Volleyball: Individual Defense DVD
Championship Productions Foundations For Successful Volleyball: Passing DVD
Championship Productions Foundations For Successful Volleyball: Attacking DVD
Championship Productions Foundations For Successful Volleyball: Blocking DVD

I purchased these videos, watched them, analyzed them, and came up with a training plan for Colsie.

We started training, but after a few sessions it became evident that a knee that she injured a few months ago was still giving her significant problems.  After seeing a doctor we were told Colsie needed to stay off her completely, could not play volleyball, and needed focused rehab.

Over the course of three months Colsie did fully rehab her knee and I was ready to get back to work in volleyball training.  There was just one problem – Colsie no longer wanted to play volleyball!  As excited as she was about volleyball just a few months ago, she was now equally unexcited.

a little girl with changed my mind bubble

So, there will be no volleyball playing – at least not for now – in the Bowman household.  I am totally okay with it.  We talked about it for a while and I absolutely believe her interests have simply changed.  It happens with children and youth.

collage of little girls silly eyes

My sixth grade daughter recently communicated a desire to play volleyball.  She has never expressed an interest in sports before, but she assured me this is a genuine interest.  She has been hitting a ball around a lot at school with friends during recess and really enjoys it.

Volleyball is a huge sport in Nebraska with large numbers of children playing from a very young age.  Even playing in a youth recreation league Colsie will be way behind without some help.

My plan is to assist Colsie in the same way I have assisted my other two daughters – Teagan (basketball) and Avery (soccer) – in the sports they play.  I will find quality instructional material, learn the game, and teach Colsie how to play volleyball.  Specifically I am interested in teaching Colsie proper technique, not just the rules of the game.

I understand the rules of volleyball, but I don’t know the first thing about volleyball technique.  I don’t know the proper way to set, bump, serve, or pass a volleyball.

But I can learn.  The key is finding quality instructional material.  There are many resources, but most of it is junk.  I will find as many websites as I can that sell instructional material, identify DVD’s that focus on technique, read the descriptions and reviews, and then make a purchase.

It was so much easier when it was just Avery playing soccer.  Supporting three girls in their athletic endeavors takes a considerable amount of time.

But it is a fun way for me to participate in their lives.  And athletics are a fantastic way to build resiliency in children.

It is worth my time.
