5 Things To Do To Thrive #Last90Days

stack of rocks for yoga

Rachel Hollis and her #Last90Days 5 Things To Do To Thrive challenge started today and Instagram was lit with people using the hashtag.

It was inspiring to follow along and see so many people wanting to live their lives in a purposeful way.

5 Things To Do To Thrive #last90days is a challenge that is meant to motivate and keep you accountable for finishing the last 90 days of the year strong.

Why wait for the new year to start? I love the do-it-now approach of this challenge.

HERE ARE THE 5 TO THRIVE

  1. Get up an hour earlier than you normally do and use the time for yourself.
  2. Workout at least 30 minutes a day.
  3. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.
  4. Give up one food category you know you shouldn’t be eating.
  5. Write down 10 things that you are grateful for each day.

When my sister shared the challenge with me, I told her I was pretty much already doing those 5 things. I didn’t mean to be arrogant or boastful, but last June I started getting up 1 hour early.

Honestly the other 5 things just kinda fell into place, just by being purposeful with getting my bum out of bed! A snowball-type effect.

It is fun to have a challenge that will help solidify and zero in on these simple, already life-changing things that help me in my pursuit to live new, live well and live with purpose!

Want to do it too?

MY THOUGHTS ON 5 THINGS TO DO TO THRIVE

1. Wake Up An Hour Early

Rachel Hollis is quick to add that this does NOT apply to new Mama’s, or those in seasons of life where extra sleep IS caring for yourself.

BUT… if you find yourself saying, “I don’t have time to read” or “I can’t find time to work out” or if you know that things like prayer, journaling or meditation would benefit you more than sleep right now…then get on up!

I started doing this thanks to advice from The Miracle Morning, and after hearing it over and over from people like Brendon Burchard, Lewis Howe and Tony Robbins, it has been a goal on my mind that I wanted to pursue.

I have been doing it regularly since early June and it has been life-changing.

I’VE BEEN WAKING UP EARLY IN ORDER TO LIVE SLOW. A PURPOSEFUL SLOW.

I spend the early morning time doing things I already was doing on a regular basis, but now I am not rushed and have a head start…it has become my favorite time of day!

I get coffee, light a candle, journal, pray, use my Bible app and meditate. By doing these habits an hour early, the rest of my day is so much more calm, focused and productive.

I am getting up regularly at 6, and there was even one week in August that I got up at 5:30 to do some extra writing for a project, and goodness was THAT ever a productive experience!

I had no idea my brain could be so clear and focused that early in the morning, but it was and is. I will write more about this discovery in another post.

Not a morning person? My advice is to try it anyway…you may be surprised and find out (like I did) that maybe you are a morning person after all. It takes time to create a habit, 20 days they say…so try it.

Wake up to do something that you REALLY, really look forward to! This is key for me.

2. Workout At Least 30 Minutes a Day

By getting up an hour early, I found myself being able to fit workouts in and quite motivated to do so. The challenge to myself was to simply move my body every day.

I took a break from some cancer medication that I have been on, and my joints felt so much better, so I was extra motivated and thankful to be able to move!

I walk daily for at least 30 minutes, with a goal of seeing my Fitbit reach 10,000 steps by the end of the day. These walks are so enjoyable thanks to nature and podcasts and my favorite Voxer app.

I decided not to put pressure on myself to jog or run, simply because I don’t enjoy it. Because of this I actually looked forward to my daily walk and it became a habit.

I also have added yoga to my ‘move everyday goal’ as it is so good for my joints and learning how to breathe is so good for anxiety. This simple 10 Minute Morning Routine is a fav, and I am on day 6 of this 30 Day Yoga Revolution series on Youtube.

I am going to use the 5 to Thrive Challenge to go from 5 days a week to 7 days a week. Eek! Good thing I really love walking and yoga. Wish me luck!

3. Drink Half Your Body Weight in Ounces of Water Each Day.

This is easy for me. Whoo-hoo! So nice to have something in the challenge that does not feel like a challenge. I drink black coffee, matcha or herbal tea, and then it is water the rest of the day.

The key for me has been my inexpensive Bubba waterbottle because it keeps my ice from melting and has a huge straw which makes getting water in a breeze.  Easy to gulp gulp gulp!

It is 24 ounces, so if I refill it 4 times a day I’m pretty much there…especially if I count my herbal tea for hydration.

4. Give Up One Food Catagory You Know You Shouldn’t Be Eating

The food category I have been working on is all the white things. White sugar, white carbs –white pasta, white flour, white bread etc. I am great with this until the weekend.

I’ve made exceptions for pizza on Friday family nights (although we have been trying out cauliflower crust pizza the last few weeks) and date nights or social outings.

I’m trying to decide if I am going to give this up completely. I think if I commit to this, I will fail…just being real and honest.

I am good with committing to 90% giving this up, but leaving space and grace on certain family nights and social outings or date nights.

Those really only come on Friday and Saturday evenings, and an occasional extended family get together on Sundays (once a month), so 90% it is!

This is doable and already something I have been putting into place, although saying no to a fun Pumpkin Spice Latte during the week will take some discipline for sure!

5. Write Down 10 Things That You’re Grateful For Each Day

I started writing what I call lists of ‘gifts’ in 2010 when I was diagnosed with cancer. It changed me and made the fight bearable. I listed them in an ongoing fashion on this blog and surpassed 1,000!

I have been listing 3/day on a daily docket I use each day and gather them at the end of the week into my journal and reflect on all the amazing things I have to be thankful for.

I can up my game on this…but it bugs me that I only left 3 lines on the daily docket I made…now I wish there were 10! Guess I will need to re-design it.

By the way, I will be sharing this docket with you in the coming weeks. It is another simple tool that creates habits that bring about purpose.

{Pin It}

So there it is. My thoughts on the 5 to Thrive Challenge. I’m 90% in for 90Days. 🙂

How about you?

Let me know if you are participating.

I will share my progress with you and give glimpses of what I do on my Instagram stories. Find me @Amy_NewNostalgia

Weekly Update

We have really embraced the goal of eating high nutrient food in our household lately, and it has been quite fun!

My Todd and I are reading Dr. Fuhrman’s Super Immunity book–meaning we both are reading on our own Kindles, viewing each other’s highlighted text and discussing as we go.

High nutrient foods include lots of veggies in lots of different bright colors, and my trusty spiralizer has been dusted off and used like crazy this week! Why have I not been using this thing on a regular basis?

Just look at those beautiful ribbons or cucumber in the above photo! It is so easy to use and can prep veggies to eat in just seconds.

I will have some posts coming up to show you how we have been sprializing, using and eating a rainbow of veg! In the meantime, follow along on Instagram, and check out my ‘food prep’ highlights. You will see examples of me sprializing away, and see how pretty it all looks stored in jars in my refrigerator.

Weekly Update

It is spring break! I’m excited to spend some extra time with my 3 girls this week. My freshman Avery made JV soccer team at school and has at practice every morning at 7:30, so no sleeping in or break from rides to school for her or me!

{there she goes!}

This week my work focus is writing content, so it really works out great! I can sit in a coffee shop (which I am doing right now) and have 1 1/2 hours of focused work time while she is at practice. It is much less time than I normally spend but at least it is something!

I’ve been batching my processes and creating systems to get my work done most efficiently as this site grows. It has been working so well.

My Work Focus Goals By Week:

Week 1 — social media

Week 2 –my home/homemaking

Week 3 –content creation/writing

Week 4 — backend of the site/admin work/pitch writing

Week 5 — photo taking /photo editing

I still do bits of everything every week, but it sure is profitable and free-ing to zero in on one main thing each week. It helps my brain know what to focus on.

Instead of wearing all the hats all the time, it gives me permission to put on one hat at a time and even tells me which hat it should be each week. I love it. No wonder hats are coming back into style.

Did you notice my home is a part of my “work?’  I often work from home, so it directly affects my work! Plus it is and always will be my priority as it is the place where the people I love gather.  I want them to have a soft place to land after being out in this often hard world.

I have to admit, my favorite focused week so far has been when I gave myself permission to focus in on my home!

Did you read my recent post about Everyday Home Goal Systems? I use these systems weekly whether it is the week I am to focus in on my home or not. They keep my home running smoothly when I use them faithfully.

What about you? Could this mindset work for you and the work you need to accomplish? Have you ever tried batching or using systems to accomplish your goals?

Favorite Things That Help Me Reach My Goals

Turmeric Supreme Supplement

I started taking turmeric regularly for joint pain that is caused by a cancer medication that I take. If I miss even one day my joints are inflamed by the next morning.

I know the minute my foot hits the ground (because I can feel every joint aching joint in my foot) that I forgot to take my turmeric. Needless to say, I rarely forget!

I really don’t know what I would do without the discovery of the amazing anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric! There are so many other benefits of this powerful root. I will write a post about it soon.

Calm Magnesium Supplement

Another supplement I take every day is called Calm. It is a powdered magnesium that you stir into water. It tastes refreshing and I truly feel the calming benefits of it.

I notice that I am a bit more uptight on days I don’t take it, and it really helps keep my anxiety in check.

Magnesium is also great for digestion issues and keeps everything working as it should in that area. That is all I will say about that. 🙂

Every Day Home Goals Chore System

Everyday Home Goals - creating home systems that work

I’m working hard at creating systems in my home to keep life flowing efficiently and smoothly. This means pursuing organized methods that will turn everyday necessities (like having clean clothes and dishes) into habits.

A home well kept in such an efficient way that it is done on automatic….this is my goal when it comes to my home.

This is not about living perfectly, but about being mindful of how I go about my day and finding mindful systems that work so that much of the mundane but necessary part of life can be done on automatic. Mindful becoming mindless.

Some examples of this:

I empty the dishwasher every morning while my coffee is brewing. It is so much a part of my morning habit that I don’t even think about it. I make coffee every morning which means my dishwasher gets emptied every morning. Win!

I clean the shower while I am in it, and do it safely by using a homemade natural cleaner that is ok to breath in. Not just ok, but thanks to essential oils, therapeutic!

It is so easy to quickly wipe down when already in there, (no awkwardly trying to lean in and clean the shower without getting wet) and I love knowing that the oils I’m using to clean (no harmful chemicals!) are also bringing alertness as I breathe them in. A great way to start the day!

Another example? Our bed gets made the minute I get out of it, even if my Todd is still in it. Ha! Seriously, I just do the best I can with pulling the comforter up and placing pillows around him. Then he can easily fix his corner and pillows when he gets up…although most days he is up before me.

These are just 3 systems built into my day that makes a huge difference in our home staying tidy.

The Everyday Home Goals below also work beautifully! They are great examples of more systems put into place that keep our home tidy on the daily.

Everyday Home Goals - creating home systems that work

Everyday Home Goals

MAKE BEDS — did you know the most successful people make their beds every day?

WIPE SURFACES — quick wipe bathroom sinks/counters, kitchen sink/counters, tables

CLUTTER — quick pick up and a few minutes wherever it is accumulating

ONE FULL LOAD — dishwasher & laundry; don’t stop until dishes and clothes are put away!

FLOORS –quick sweep, vacuum & spot clean

GENERAL PICKUP — be aware throughout the day. Put things back in their place.

TRASH — kitchen trash daily, bathroom and office trash weekly. My Todd takes care of this one. I am grateful.

Home goals - Creating systems for effortless homemakeing

I do quite well with most of the Everyday Home Goals. I will comment below on each of them:

Make beds — this is automatic for me. I don’t have to think about it.

Wipe surfaces — another automatic. When I get the spray cleaner in hand, I concentrate on flat surfaces and think of the surfaces that need to be wiped every day. For me, this is kitchen and bathroom sinks and counters, and my kitchen and dining room tables. I spray and wipe these areas all at one time, at least one time a day.

Clutter — oh man. This one seems neverending and right now I have way too many piles throughout my home, but I’m super motivated with Spring here! You cannot organize clutter so I will be getting rid of much of it.

One Full Load — I do a load every day of both dishes and laundry…but my downfall is the follow through with washing/drying dishes that don’t fit into the dishwasher and making sure I put away/hang up all clean clothes.

When I do the follow through, it is amazing what a difference this makes. I am prioritizing how to make this into a system that works completely for me on the daily and will update you when I get it figured out!

Floors — I do this automatically every day in my main living areas…living room, dining room and kitchen. I have wood floors and 2 area rugs so it is fast and easy. I love doing it because I love a good vacuum line and how it instantly makes the room feel clean. I also hate stepping on crumbs so that is huge motivation to get that broom out.

General pickup — I’m pretty good at this. I do it mindlessly without thinking. As I walk through a room I will straighten what needs to be (I’m forever straightening throw pillows!) and pick up items to take with me to where they belong.

I am always looking for things to upstairs that made their way downstairs, and vise versa. I rarely walk up or down the stairs without grabbing something on my way that is misplaced.

Trash — like I said above, my man does this one. I’m spoiled.

Everyday Home Goals - creating home systems that work

A Chore A Day Goals

– Bathrooms — note: you can save the floor for Thursday

– Dusting –“work quickly, top to bottom, left to right” —Clean Mama

– Vacuuming — some weeks just the middles will do, other weeks add upholstery and rugs.

Th – Floors –sweep & mop

–  Kitchen — wipe down microwave and appliances. Wipe down and sort refrigerator. Wipe stove. Shine stainless steel.

Sa – Change Sheets –nothing like fresh sheets and towels!

Su – None –just do Everyday Home Goals listed above

Note: If getting all done at once is more your style, you can take 1-2 hours of time, once a week, and do all of the above in one fell swoop.

Everyday Home Goals - creating home systems that work

Let’s talk about these Chore a Day Goals. I don’t know if I love them or hate them. While I have my Everyday Home Goals pretty much down, the Chore a Day goals are a different story.

My success really depends on what type of week I am having. If my week is a normal, structured week where my schedule goes according to plan, I get them done no problem.

The problem comes when the week is overbooked or unexpected life events come up. On these weeks, I end up doing it all in one day and that day is usually a Saturday, or it does not get done at all. Yuck!

Doing it all in one day is not my favorite way to spend a chunk of time on a Saturday, so I really want to figure out how to consistently do a little bit each day of the week.

I think the key to making these Chore a Day Goals into a habit is finding 15 minutes of time in each day that is consistent. I will think about that, figure it out, implement it, and get back to you on my success!

Another key to creating this habit is keeping my daily and weekly goals in a place where I see them every day, all throughout the day. This printable is the answer for me right now. It works well printed out and put on a magnet on my refrigerator.

Keep reading if you want one too!

I’m on a mission to continue to build more systems into my day, to make keeping a home as simple as possible. I have been very successful with what I’ve implemented so far, but systems often need tweaked and they take time to put into place and become automatic. I will continue sharing them with you as I discover what is working best for me, so make sure you get on the list!

Anti-Procrastination Weekly Update and Goals

Letterboard Quote Goals

Weekly Update

I cannot believe it is the middle of February! I chuckle at the ‘weekly’ word…it has been a month since my last ‘weekly’ update.

This month swooped in and I already found myself needing to revisit my New Year’s goals and embrace slow once again.

February came in with a bang and along with it a busted pipe. The main sewage pipe in our home. Frozen and cracked, it wreaked a bit of havoc on our home. Carpet is torn up, walls cut down, but the pipe is fixed! A great reminder of what a gift running water is, and what is and is not an emergency in this life. This was not. We have the option to fix it. We have running water once again. I am thankful.

I recently decorated for our yearly IF: Gathering and it was much fun, but lots of thought and work. It was a wonderful weekend–you can see glimpses of it on my Instagram. Have you heard of IF or participated in your city?

My Todd had a birthday February 5th but we have yet to celebrate it. We had family plans but needed to cancel them. Evidence of a hard, hard-working season for him, and that we are all trying to figure out the best way to live this life and all it can throw at us.

Valentines Day came with it a reminder: all that matters is love. It forced me into contemplating love and this family of mine.

I had to just take a breath, buckle down and figure out once again how to slow down and love well. Time is passing and I have been too busy doing lots of loving and lovely things but missing out a bit on my Love’s at home.

My Teagan is a senior, ain’t nobody got time for missing out on time! I reevaluate where I’m spending it and how. I make choices where and when I have the power to. Deliberateness matters.

The above letterboard that is in our home reminds me what must be most important to me during this season. My home, my people in my home, and the allowing of God’s glory to infiltrate our lives.

Figuring out what this looks like right now has taken long Voxers to my sister and my dearest friends as I try to decide what are my best ‘yesses’ and my best ‘no’s, and how to make the best of fast, hard seasons.

It is so hard to slow and say no to great things to say yes to the greatest of things. This matters, even if it means postponing my own dreams to help those I love to chase theirs.

I so don’t have it figured out but it is good to sometimes just put the breaks on and make tough decisions with time, so that it doesn’t pass me by.

I have been using some new routines when it comes to keeping my home clean, and I’m blown away at how well they work! I’ve been so inspired by the book  Simply Clean by Becky Rapinchuk. Becky is the founder of Clean Mama and knows what she is doing when it comes to cleaning!

I am halfway through the book and I’m using the techniques and routines I list below in my ‘DO EVERYDAY HOME GOALS’ and ‘A CHORE A DAY GOALS’. I have more to learn but there is already a marked difference in my home, and I’m spending less time cleaning it!

“Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed me yet”

Essential Oil Diffuser

Still using it daily and love it! The Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser by AromaSoft is amazing for getting the scent out into larger rooms. It is priced very reasonably and works so well! After buying 4 other diffusers, I did some research, read a ton of reviews, and bought this one. I’m so happy I did!

ANTI-PROCRASTINATION

Anti-Procrastination Weekly Plan

AP-header1

We had a wonderful 4th of July, how about you? I didn’t capture much of it digitally because my phone was stolen last week, which was a very sad day. The cops traced it to an apartment complex, but were unable to locate it.

It has been interesting to be less connected. I’m going to enjoy it while I can, although a new/used phone came in the mail today thanks to my husband and Gazelle, and will be up and running soon. I am thankful.

Construction continues this week on the outside of our home, but the hammering and saws are quieter as it is time to paint! I’m excited to see the finished product.  I will be snapping some before and afters, and posting updates on Snapchat. You can follow me there if you’d like! Snapchat Username: newnostalgia
