~ my quest to be present in each moment,
learning from yesterday and living simply in the NEW!

Welcome to the New, New Nostalgia!

Along with a new blog design, comes a new tagline.  Before, it was “My quest to recapture the simplicity of yesterday and apply it to today.” Well, that just does not cut it anymore.  I still love simplicity, but I am no longer on a quest for it.

Instead, I am on a quest to LIVE!

To apply what I have learned from the past and remember that I have been made NEW!

How to live new on a daily basis, in all those little moments that add up and create a simple and meaningful LIFE.

Yes, living simply is part of that, but only a piece.

Cancer has changed me.

I am a completely different person than I used to be.

I am finding that what is important to me now,
and how I want to spend my energy and time is different than before.

Much of that energy and many of my posts will be on how I pursue health in every way:
 spiritually, emotionally, mentally & physically.

Because my focus is different than before, there has been change to my writing.  My posts are deeper, and at times, heavier.  But at other times, a silly lightness has also come with the awareness that life on this earth is short. I will share the small, simple things that bring joy and make up life– the tidbits that I want recorded for the future. Pretty much what I have always done, just tweaked a little.

Bear with me, as I will also share updates of my medical journey and posts that leave my heart and soul bare at times.

Come with me as I take advantage of this new outlook, striving for the simple life which allows one to be present in the moments, knowing that we never know how many of those precious moments we have left.

Before I move on to the more specific posts that make up New Nostalgia, I must introduce you to someone who has helped make New Nostalgia what it now is.

New Nostalgia Ad Coordinator & Chief Coder

Robyn from She Makes Media & She Makes Hats is someone who has been such a gift to me and to pretty much every one else that meets her.  She writes about her goal of giving away 10,000 hats in her lifetime at She Makes Hats, and also uses her expertise at She Makes Media, in blog design and coding. Without her, this new design would not exist, she has been an absolute joy to have by my side. Get to know Robyn, as I will be mentioning her from time to time, for really her presence is all over my life and this site!

The Best Of New Nostalgia:

My husband of 16 years, Todd.

Todd is a regular contributor.  He writes the series, Purposeful Living.  He is a man who not only writes about living purposefully, but lives it out every day.  How did I get so lucky?

My 3 girls, age 13, 11 & 9

You will see them pop up from time to time.  They are my lovelies.  They are my heart.  They bring so much joy to the moments that at times I think I could burst!

I try hard to use ingredients that have been around awhile, before processed “food” came about. Simple and healthful is my goal.  You will see a shift in my recipes, as I have embraced an 80% plant based diet.  I no longer eat meat, but I still make it occasionally for my family, so there will see recipes of all types here at New Nostalgia

Organize & Simplify
Organizing and Simplifying seem to be on everyones mind.  In our house, routines and charts are key! I chuckle to myself when writing this one, if you could only see the state of my house right now!

Diagnosed August 2010 with Stage 3b Invasive Lobular Carcinoma, I coped by writing honestly and candidly, and my readers buckled down and were by my side through the whole ride.  Here is a taste of some of those posts.  For me, the most precious is seeing the comments from all of you under each of these posts. Amazing support and love.  For more, see my ‘Cancer Journey’ & ‘Caring Bridge’ category buttons in my sidebar.
{Happy Anniversary Husband! (a video of the journey in pictures)}

I am a hairstylist turned full time homemaker / blogger, so the creative in me loves to find beauty in everything.  I like to explore beauty, without spending a fortune doing it.
captured life 2
Oh, to have this one figured out.  I love being a mom.  I do my best, but have much to learn!  My prayer is that I will never stop growing as I explore this thing called motherhood.  I post as I go, sharing the things I discover that help me in this amazing job called “mom.”
healthy living 2
I’ve always tried to embrace a healthy lifestyle, but got super serious about it after diagnosis.  Here are a few ways I have embraced a more healthy lifestyle.

crafts 2
Again, I love to create, and so do my 3 girls (age 12, 11 & 9).
Here are some of the things we have done together.

homemaking 2
A job I take very seriously.  We have such power as moms to create an environment to (as my joy post said) hurt or heal.  I desire home to be a place where my family can come and be fully who they are, and to heal from what life brings. This, to me, makes home environment so important!
spiritual 2
It is THE thread that holds all of who I am together, it affects all that I do, because He IS.

It is a once a week place where you and I can get things done together!
I would love to have you link up or leave a comment!

Health Update

Remember the implant I told you about?  The one that was slowly migrating south and ignored my whispered pleas to stay put? Well, it had to pay for its rebellion and has been replaced with a brand, spankin’ new one.  This exchange happened yesterday and surgery went really well.

I was completely covered in prayer, I know this by your comments here and my guestbook comments at my Caring Bridge site.  Boy, did I feel those prayers!  I woke up in the morning with no apprehension, and had complete peace and even joy all day.  Such a crazy feeling.  So very cool.

My Todd, Mom & Dad all kept me company before surgery.  My loves.

It was all so familiar:

blood drawn in arm,  I.V. in hand,  paper gown,  silly socks,  silly hat,  sexy compression stockings,  a bazillion questions and signatures,  kind nurses,  capable doctors,  sweet anesthesiologist,  a ride to the surgical suite,  a transfer to the surgical table,  arms stretched out  and strapped down,  my body in the shape of the cross that brought thoughts of my Jesus, drugs to bring a deep sleep,  the question “are you feeling that yet?”,  asleep and awake before I can answer, a moan from me, a question from her “how is your pain?,” my not- so- familiar answer

“I have none.”

This was the first time I woke from surgery and didn’t need any morphine or additional I.V. pain meds.  How cool is that?   After crackers and apple juice, my mom helped me dress and before I know it we are on our way.  We stop at Bread & Cup for a vegetable soup and sandwich to bring home. My mom made her famous Sloppy Joes which delighted my kids who ate 2 sandwiches each!  My mother-in-law, who saw my girls out to and in from school, joined us.  She then gave my girls a ride to a skating party, and I was left in a quiet house to rest.

Really… a great day.  How strange.  Sometimes God is.  I love it when He takes something that one might usually dread, mix in His supernatural peace and gifts, and makes it something beautiful.  You asked Him this for me and He answered “Yes.”

Right now it is 3 a.m. and sleep just won’t come.  My throat is sore and I feel like I was punched super duper hard in the chest.  They cut through my chest muscle and stitched ‘myself to myself’ to create a new “fold,”  so I am quite swollen and sore.  Ice packs help.  It is only painful when I move, so I am practicing stillness.  This physical stillness brings on a beautiful spiritual stillness.  I am being still and knowing that God Is.

God is God.
God is great
God is present.
God is good.
God is love.
God is always.

God is.
