Decorating With Numbers

Decorating with numbers is all the rage right now, thanks to Pottery Barn. I have seen so many great Pottery Barn knock-offs all over the web, and I think it is time that I get in on the action.

I found these great baskets at our local thrift store for $4.00 each.  My plan is to paint them each with a number using a stencil, then hang them on my kitchen wall.  I have very little storage space in my kitchen, so they would hold things like dishcloths, paper products, foil and ziplock bags, etc.  I am contemplating spray painting them black, then making the number on each of them white.   The wall they will be hanging on is a deep red, and all the cupboards in my kitchen are white.  I have a glass topped, rod iron table with 2 black chairs right in front of the wall I want to hang them on.  Here is a small glimpse of the area I am talking about.

What do you think? I need your input–should I spray paint them black?  White?  Keep them natural with a black number?  Should I hang them horizontally or make a square, hanging 2, with 2 directly below them?  I am leaning toward painting them black with a white number, and hanging them in a row horizontally. What do you think?

If your kitchen cabinets are white, I would choose colors that help transition and bring the two areas together, assuming that what the layout lends to. I like all of your suggestions, but for the baskets, I first choice would be natural with a black circle and white letter. If it were me, I would hang them in a square and look at them for a few days. If you don’t think it has enough ‘pop’, you can always paint them black and re-number them…no harm done.

I haven’t seen this ‘number’ thing but it’s just darling! Thanks for the ideas!

Love all those numbers! But I wouldn’t paint the baskets either. However, hanging them in a row or in a diamond might be nice. 🙂 Visiting you from New Friend Friday!

If you’re unsure of color, leave the baskets as they are and just put white numbers on them. If you don’t like white, you can go over the numbers in black. If you don’t like again, you can then paint the whole basket white or black and try all over again…hope that makes sense!

I would hang them vertically in the corner above the window seat area to mirror the line of the window. Painting them black is to much the same…not enough contrast. But painting them white would be to great of a contrast. I would choose a medium grey or taupe color…keep it neutral so that the numbers are prominent(whether black or white) but not out of place in terms of tone and contrast. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

hmmm… I think since the chairs are black and the wall is such a rich color, paint them white with a black number…

and I adore those number pillows… must go find them….

I love the baskets! I hate to see them painted, though I kind of want to see them painted. Dilemma? 🙂 Maybe leave them natural with a cream number that you can “age” somewhat? Then again, up against the red wall, they may look different than they do on their own. So I think black, white white numbers. And hung in a square. 🙂 Just my two cents. 🙂

First of all, what a great deal for those 4 baskets! I like your idea of painting them black…they will really look great in your space! Maybe you could hang them a few different ways and take a pic of each and we could vote on them! 🙂

I think any of your ideas would look great, but I am with you and leaning more towards painting them black with white numbers! Can’t wait to see how they turn out!
