Want to have the softest, silkiest legs ever? Then make this Coconut Lime Sugar Scrub. It is awesome!
Now, the scrub is amazing, but the technique is what brings on smoothest legs ever!
I found this idea on Pinterest, from Gluten Free Navy Wife, and it intrigued me enough that I whipped up a batch and jumped in the tub just minutes after reading it.
Here is what you do:
First:
Mix up your scrub.
Coconut Lime Sugar Scrub
1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1 1/4 cup Sugar
3 Tbsp Lime or Lemon Juice {fresh is best!}
Put all into a jar and stir.
_______________
Second:
Grab your scrub, a razor, & jar of coconut oil. Fill up the tub and soak for about 5 minutes.
Third:
Use the below shaving technique for the softest, smooooothest legs!
~Shave 1st leg using straight coconut oil.
~Take a palmful of your Homemade Coconut Lime Sugar Scrub & scrub that leg, then rinse.
~Shave your leg again. Yeppers, you got that right…again.
~Repeat with other leg.
~After your bath, dry off and apply a small amount of straight coconut oil as lotion, or use your favorite lotion.
Additional Thoughts:
~The first time you shave, it will remove the hair. After applying the scrub which loosens dead skin cells, the second shave removes that nastiness. Rinse your razor often, you will see why. Honestly, I was a bit horrified at what came off my legs!
~Why skip shaving gels/lotions and use coconut oil instead? Well, it is healthy natural product. I do not get bumps on my legs anymore after switching to natural soap and shaving with coconut oil. If you think about it, those gels that come in a can and that foam up are full of all kinds of chemicals and artificial ingredients. When you go and shave, making small nicks in the skin, those ingredients then go right in and cause irritation. It reminds me of when I was allergy tested as a kid…ever have that done? They put the irritant that you may be allergic to on your skin, then make a small pin prick- nick, then measure the irritation to determine if you are allergic. Goes to show that what you put on your skin topically does effect the body more than one would think!
~My fav razor is a Mach 3 Gillette. I have been using it for years. Even with all the fancy smancy lady like razors out there, I still prefer my Gillette. Yes, the refill blades are expensive, but they last forever and I love how close of a shave I get with this razor! Plus, I have a thing for black and silver…
~I also use coconut oil as a lotion. Why? Again, the natural factor. I love how it makes my skin feel. I love that I don’t have to spend all kinds of money on different lotions full of ingredients that I really don’t want on my skin. I love that it is a minimalist approach, no more beauty lotion clutter in my house! I buy organic coconut oil at Trader Joes. This link will take you to the brand I used before TJ’s came to town, it is a great brand and price on Amazon.
~This scrub is awesome for all parts of the body. I even used it on my face! If you get a little on your lips, at least it tastes yummy!
~I keep this in the refrigerator. These pics are of the scrub just out of the refrigerator. It is more liquid/oily if it is at room temp. Coconut oil solidifies at a certain temp, so the consistency of the scrub depends on the room temperature. It works well no matter what consistency, but you can use less if it is in a more solid state.
~I plan on using this technique often–not every time I shave my legs, but whenever I want to give my skin an extra pampering. I WILL use the scrub all over quite often, as I love how it makes my skin feel.
Silky smooth! Click here for 6 MORE ways I use it in my beauty routine.
~I skipped putting lotion on after using this scrub. I found after I dried off that my skin was super soft and smooth and didn’t need it. In the winter this might change. I ran around giddy making my whole family feel my super soft legs. They thought I was a bit nutty, but boy does this scrub make me happy!

February 5, 2015 at 8:59 pmMade this up tonight before my bath because my legs have been very dry and flaky this winter… I did not experience the removal of gross stuff during the 2nd shaving, but all in all…my legs feel moisturized, soft and smooth.

January 28, 2015 at 2:37 pmNo….you don’t heat until hot. Coconut oil melts at 74 degrees. My sugar did not melt.

August 28, 2014 at 3:05 amIf u leave your razor (just the blades) soaking in baby oil or coconut oil in between shaves it makes the blade last a lot longer. Hubby does this and instead if getting 3-5 uses out of one razor he gets 15-20 uses out of it!!! For some reason the oil keeps the blades sharp for a long time.

July 5, 2014 at 4:04 pmHello! I just stumbled across your website and I absolutely love it! I can’t wait to try this scrub, but I do have a question about coconut oil. I get really annoying razor burn along my bikini line, upper thighs, and under arms, do you think shaving with coconut oil will help that? I have just gotten so used to it and figured I’ll always have it, so I’m hoping this will help!

July 5, 2014 at 4:08 pmYes, this will help it. As well as nice sharp razor, not going over the same area twice, and exfoliating with this scrub and a bath sponge. Often I think the irritation has much to do with artificial ingredients in products, so use a natural soap. Try to find on at your local farmers market that is organically and locally made.

February 20, 2014 at 9:32 pmA great trick I found that improves this scrub- If you have a kitchen aid, whip it all together. First start with the coconut oil, and hard can be better, then start the mixer with the whip and add the sugar, almost like when you’re creaming together butter and sugar. It makes it so light and mixes it together so well and it doesn’t get as hard when it cools down. Also the extra air whipped in can help stretch the amount a bit longer. I put a smaller container in the shower and store the rest in the fridge. Then when I run out in the shower, i take the container out of the fridge, let it sit overnight, and add more to the shower container. I love this stuff.
I also sometimes add a bit of jojoba oil or olive oil along with the coconut when I whip it all together.

May 25, 2013 at 11:44 amHow do you store your coconut oil? Depending on the tempurature in my pantry, the coconut oil goes from “butter” like state, to completely solid, to total liquid. Does this affect the recipe at all?

June 21, 2013 at 5:56 pmI make sugar scrubs using olive oil and white sugar and a pure glycerin soap, moisturize, clean and exfoliate in one step. use on entire body even safe for face. they last 3 months after made, unrefrigerated. they can be used after that but do not melt as well. would not use on tender body area’s as they are a scrub. I make mine in cubes and store in a jar. one cube for a shower.

February 19, 2013 at 5:54 pmAmy, Just tried the shaving technique. Oh my my! I am a fan! I am new to coconut oil and its many uses but wow this is so awesome. I am a breast cancer champion (I like that better than survivor because I’ve run a race and with the awesome hand of God I won that race). I am in the process of taking my family down a more natural path tho many times they kick & scream they are seeing the positive changes in me. Thank you so much for all if your encouraging words, recipes, ideas, etc. God bless you and our endeavors!

January 4, 2013 at 4:04 pmTrying to figure out a way NOT to have to refrigerate it. Do you think I could use essential oil rather than actual juice? Or maybe extract?
Anonymous
March 7, 2013 at 1:33 amI make it in small batches and haven’t had any problems not refrigerating it. The juice might go bad if you had it too long, but it’s not like you’re going to eat it.

December 31, 2012 at 2:55 amWhat does the citric acid do?
Karena
December 21, 2012 at 9:17 pmJust a heads up, coconut oil melts at 76 degrees (so holding it in your head liquifies it immediately). So somewhere around 74-75 degrees and it should be in a usably soft state. I’m soooo planning to try this btw! I use coconut oil AFTER I shave on my bikini line and it keeps the hurt away. Never thought to try it to shave WITH. Question though, if the coconut oil liquifies, does the sugar dissolve?
Amy Bowman
December 21, 2012 at 9:28 pmthat is helpful information! Thanks! I stored mine in the refrigerator and like you said, used my hand to soften it a bit in the shower. There were a few time where I kept in for a few days in the shower and even though it softened up I did not notice that the sugar dissolved.
Anonymous
December 20, 2012 at 8:57 pmDo I need to liquefy the oil? I just bought some but its in a solid form. Just wondering. Wanting to try this so bad. 🙂
Amy Bowman
December 20, 2012 at 10:37 pmsoften it, don’t liquify it. Kind of like softening sticks of butter before using. Leaving it out at room temp should soften it enough, depending on your house temp.

December 14, 2012 at 12:25 amFor a dry scrub, try equal parts sugar, salt, and baking soda. Mix well and store in a watertight container. To use, add a few drops of water to 1 tablespoon of mix and scrub on legs/body. Rinse well.

November 10, 2012 at 12:23 pmdoes the sugar dissolve…I’m thinking of if the mixture is left out of the fridge and the oil warms to liquid?
Anonymous
October 17, 2012 at 5:49 pmi use the olive oil and sugar scrub myself because my hands and feet get really dry and cracked. It only works for an hour or so and then they are cracked and dry… and make noise when you rub them on fabric. They even get caught to cotton spider webs during Halloween season!!!! So I tried your concoction and well… it wasn’t as dry but still cracked in an hour. You can hear my skin get caught on my socks. I did see FILM on my arms this morning? is this the Coconut oil drying out on my arms? I washed it off right away and after a few hours no film and smooth arms. I’ll try again next time when I shave and let you know the outcome. I have the coconut oil on my hair right now. I remember my mom doing this to my hair when I was younger. I wonder how it will turn out this time 30 years later!! I guess Ill let you know.
Anyways… does anyone get the white film like i did?? do I need to wash it off thoroughly then?
Miranda
October 25, 2012 at 10:05 pmI’ve never had a film while using cocnut oil. The oil is fast absorbing and never leaves an oily feeling. Is the stuff you used expressed or virgin/unrefined? Also, apply the coconut oil by itself to your hands/feet multiple times a day and you should see a noticeable improvement with the cracking soon.
Anonymous
January 18, 2013 at 2:46 pmI also have problems with really dry feet. Coconut oil has been a lifesaver. Like Miranda said use it several times a day. At night when mine get really bad I put a lot on then cover with Vaseline ( I know its not natural but keeps the moisture in) then put on socks that are aloe infused (from the health and beauty of most stores like Target or Wal-Mart.) Takes a while but will help you out a lot. Maybe try not putting to much oil on. That might be where the film is coming from although I have never experienced it myself.

September 22, 2012 at 2:06 amI just tried making this and it certainly is yummy! The coconut oil I got was kind of hard so it formed some clumps in the mix. If I was to make it again, I would probably use eggbeaters to prevent this. But otherwise it looks/smells awesome! Can’t wait to try it.

December 20, 2012 at 10:36 pmhmm..I always have mine to a softened state…kind of like softening sticks of butter before using in a recipe. Could use the microwave for this, too.

I took this too mildly haha! I was pretty disturbed, but somehow satisfied, seeing all that nasty on the razor. You weren’t kidding about rinsing it often 😛
Despite how disgusting my shower drain is looking right now, I know I’ll be doing this again. Thanks!
Oh, also, I used Peanut Oil because it’s what I had in hand. I’ll definitely be getting some coconut oil for the future though.

July 29, 2012 at 12:40 amI make it and leave it in shower and have never had it go bad. Citrus, especially lemon are a natural antimicrobial. You can use any citrus, they all make amazing scrubs, grapefruit is my favorite!!!
Deirdre
June 29, 2012 at 6:02 amIf you keep it in the fridge it should be good for a couple months. Tea tree oil and honey are both good at maintaining the shelf life of products. Tea tree us also antibacterial which could prevent bumps. Honey is a humectant to keep your skin moist. Either could be a great addition.

June 28, 2012 at 6:09 pmI honestly don’t know. I’ve had mine for a week now in the refrigerator and so far so good. I would think quite awhile as it is just sugar, lemon juice and oil. I think the lemon juice needs refrigerated, though.

June 21, 2012 at 9:09 pmYep, big fan of coconut oil as lotion. Thanks for sharing this scrub. It never occurred to me to use coconut oil with sugar instead of olive oil. In Roman times, they would oil you down with olive oil and then scrape your skin as apposed to washing. Then of course you would soak in a pool for a while. Aahh, the life! It is amazing what the oil on your skin can pull off, and how ineffective soap is at cleaning your skin. Oh, as a variation, add cocoa powder. Super yummy and cocoa is a deep cleanser.
Jen
June 21, 2012 at 9:35 pmBeth, what would the recipe look like if it were to have cocoa powder in it?
Anonymous
June 30, 2013 at 2:27 amOooh Lord help me with my facetiousness. It looks brown with cocoa powder in it :). Cocoa (chocolate powder) is not only a deep cleanser, but also a wonderful skin feeder. It is a fabulous addition to a homemade oil and sugar scrub, as are the grounds of coffee. The rest of the coffee grounds are just great to put under plants that like a bit of an acidic ‘feed’. Thank you so much for your wonderful page(s). You’ve reached us all the way down deepest south (New Zealand). ♥♥June
